Kim Godwin, the ABC News president who was the first Black woman to run a broadcast network news operation, is leaving the Disney unit amid increasing concern about the way she was managing the home of shows like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”
Godwin told staffers in a memo Sunday that she planned to “retire from broadcast journalism.” Her command had come under increasing scrutiny since a restructuring of ABC News and Disney’s ABC stations had her reporting directly to Debra OConnell, a Disney business veteran who is seen as a valued operator at the company. OConnell will lead ABC News for the foreseeable future, she told employees Sunday evening.
A Disney spokesperson declined to make executives available for additional comment or to respond to a query about what changes Godwin’s exit might mean for the executive’s immediate direct reports or the management of individual ABC News programs.

ABC News Live, the network news division’s streaming offering, is expanding its lineup in a fresh push for consumers seeking live news outside of the traditional TV ecosystem.

Less than a month after accusations of harassment and hostile workplace behavior broke against him, Don Lemon has been terminated from CNN.
The longtime anchor, who joined the cable news company in 2006 and most recently co-hosted the daytime talk show “CNN This Morning,” announced the news Monday. In a statement posted on Twitter, Lemon said he learned the news from his agent, and was not directly informed by CNN’s management.
“I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated from CNN,” Lemon wrote on Twitter. “After 17 years at CNN I would have thought someone at management would have had the decency to tell me directly. At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play. With that said,...

Don Lemon has made less than savory comments throughout his career, but after his “women in their prime” moment, a new expose has surfaced detailing his tenure at CNN, which reportedly says he’s ridiculed and attacked his colleagues for over 15 years. The report dates back to 2008, according to Variety, where he was enraged that his then-colleague Kyra Phillips was assigned to cover Iraq, so much so that he tore up notes at their shared news pod and threatened her via text from a burner phone. According to the expose, leadership at CNN traced the number back to Lemon, which sent a text: “Now you’ve crossed the line, and you’re going to pay for it.” An investigation with Hr was launched, and as a result, Lemon was made to cover the weekend shift, considered a demotion at the time, says Variety. This is just one of many incidents...

Don Lemon has denied a report accusing the longtime CNN anchor of reckless behavior and misogyny.
“The story, which is riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence, is entirely based on unsourced, unsubstantiated, 15-year-old anonymous gossip,” a spokesperson for Lemon told TheWrap. “It’s amazing and disappointing that Variety would be so reckless.”
The report, published Wednesday, unearthed allegations originating from the cable news anchor’s sprawling career at CNN, including accusations of mocking female staffers and “diva-like” behavior, leading up to Lemon’s recent controversy after declaring that Nikki Haley was not a viable presidential candidate as the 51-year-old “isn’t in her prime.”
Citing anonymous sources, the report chronicled rising tension between Lemon and Kyra Phillips, hi co-anchor on CNN’s “Live From” weekday show in the late 2000s. It stated that a “Live From” producer and a newsroom supervisor had to pull Lemon off the...

Don Lemon returned to CNN in February after making sexist remarks about presidential candidate Nikki Haley, and according to CNN, that was under the condition that he would participate in “formal training.” At the time Lemon said, “When I make a mistake I own it, and I own this one as well.” But a new exposé from Variety reports that he’s made far more than just one mistake — accusations of Lemon’s sexist and inappropriate behavior date back to 2008, two years after he started at the network, while working on Live From with Kyra Phillips.

Update: A few hours after becoming the subject of a damning report from Variety, Don Lemon has denied all allegations.
In a statement provided to The Wrap, a spokesperson for Lemon said that: “The story, which is riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence, is entirely based on unsourced, unsubstantiated, 15-year-old anonymous gossip. Original Story Follows:
In February, longtime CNN anchor Don Lemon created a media controversy when he said on-air that Presidential candidate Nikki Haley was “past her prime.” Lemon’s statements — which included the claim that “A woman is considered to be in their prime in their 20s and 30s and maybe 40s” — resulted in the Emmy winner briefly getting benched from his gig as “CNN This Morning” co-host, and led to the anchor reportedly apologizing for his actions on a staff-wide call.

Back in 2008, Don Lemon was co-anchoring CNN’s “Live From” weekday show with Kyra Phillips, a gig that he landed after he arrived at the network two years prior from local news in Chicago. For months, tensions between the pair kept mounting. On more than one occasion, a “Live From” producer and a newsroom supervisor had to pull Lemon off the air during a commercial break because of the anchor’s provocative antics, not unlike his recent declaration that the 51-year-old Nikki Haley isn’t a viable presidential candidate because she “isn’t in her prime.” Amid the charged atmosphere, sources say Lemon disrespected colleague Nancy Grace on the air and Soledad O’Brien during an editorial meeting attended by roughly 30 staffers.

The layoff that hit ABC News this week hit correspondents Marci Gonzelez, Clayton Sandell and Kyra Phillips, as well as executive producers Jeanmarie Condon, David Reiter and John Green, according to an individual with knowledge of the network.
In addition, Hilary Estey McLaughlin, who oversaw daytime programming like “The View,” was among those who got the pink slip. Others affected included correspondents, executive producers and other executives who oversaw functions like special events and news gathering.
A spokesperson did not comment on the layoffs — which affected a percentage of the news division’s 1,300 person staff in the low single digits — or any potential severance packages.
“Unfortunately, as we position ABC News for the future, we’ve made the difficult decision to reduce the size of our workforce in a few areas,” ABC News President James Goldston said in a Thursday memo to staff. “As hard as this moment is for our colleagues,...

Updated with schedules for Week 2 hearings: The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence will continue public hearings in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump for a second week beginning Tuesday. Last week’s three witnesses marked the first such hearings to take place since President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 and only the fourth time against a sitting president in U.S. history.
The House of Representatives is probing charges that Trump attempted to coerce Ukraine, a foreign government, to launch an investigation of political rival Joe Biden and his son. The hearings could wrap before the end of the year.
Like last week, cable networks are planning full-court coverage for scheduled hearings this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (see the breakdown below). Most broadcast networks plan to break in to regularly scheduled programming, while offering uninterrupted coverage via their digital outlets.
Deadline will also live-stream all the hearings this week.

Following roles in in Hawaii Five-0 and Harry's Law, Jean Smart has found a new comedy role, according to Deadline. She's joined the Craig Robinson-centered pilot, which has Robinson playing a musician who becomes a middle school music teacher. Smart will play the stressed out principal of Robinson's school.
Good news, Mr. Feeny will be a part of Boy Meets World follow-up series Girl Meets World as William Daniels will reprise the role. Those of you who thought it would be hard to revisit Cory and Topanga without Mr. Feeny's sage advice, you can let out a sigh of relief.
Whoa. The second season of Baby Daddy doesn't debut for another two months, but ABC Family has already ordered a third season.

NEW YORK -- CNN apologized Tuesday after an open mike transmitted an anchor's bathroom conversation with another woman live over the network as it was carrying President Bush's speech live in New Orleans. "Live From" anchor Kyra Phillips had apparently left the set around 12:48 p.m. ET Tuesday for a bathroom break while the news channel carried Bush's speech marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Phillips' wireless microphone was turned on and picked up about a minute and a half of a muffled conversation she had with an unidentified woman where she apparently talked about her husband, laughed and talked about her brother. CNN anchor Daryn Kagan broke into the telecast immediately afterward updating viewers on what Bush had been saying. "CNN experienced audio difficulties during the president's speech today in New Orleans," the CNN statement read. "We apologize to our viewers and the president for the disruption."...
