Two brothers make a pitstop in a town teeming with cannibals in Chris von Hoffmann's Drifter, and for our latest Q&A feature, we caught up with Hoffmann to discuss the making of his feature film debut.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Chris. How and when did you first come up with the idea for Drifter?
Chris von Hoffmann: I actually thought of the concept back when I was 16. It was just one of several script ideas I started putting together on paper but never saw it all the way through because of my attention span back then. However, I had the title, had written the opening scene and had the overall structure down, but it was slightly different. The original concept still centered on two brothers who wind up in a strange town, but the town was originally possessed by a...

Who knew cream soda could break your heart?
But it did just that at the start of Bones Season 12 Episode 8.
Because when it comes to grief, it’s the little things, the small reminders that someone isn’t coming back that can shake you to your core.
In this case, it wasn’t Booth being insensitive or forgetful, it was him trying to console his children who just lost their grandfather.
Booth is a good man, and I dare say, he was hurting almost as much as Brennan.
I may not have killed that girl, but if it wasn't for me, she'd still be alive.

Robert Englund and Freddy Krueger. Not since Bela Lugosi and Dracula have a character and an actor been so deeply linked. And I would venture to say that not even Lugosi’s Dracula achieved the level of mainstream popularity achieved by Englund’s Krueger. During the late ’80s, you couldn’t turn on the television, open a magazine, or even look at a damn lunchbox without seeing Freddy’s charred face plastered on it. But that scorched visage would be nothing without Englund’s personality at the core of the character. Englund’s ability to imbue Krueger with such malicious delight struck a note with the public that just can’t be replicated. Jackie Earle Haley is a fantastic actor and did some interesting things in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, but I never really felt like I was watching Freddy Krueger.

Before grindhouse director Bob Kelljan turned exclusively to television by the late 1970s, he had accidentally carved out a small triptych of derivative American vampire flicks, beginning with his first solo effort, 1970’s Count Yorga, Vampire. The actor turned director initially starred in his first co-directed effort, the incest drama Flesh of My Flesh (1969), but the success of his Dracula rip-off would carry on to a 1971 sequel before assuming duties for the Blaxploitation sequel Scream Blacula Scream (1973). Initially conceived as a soft-core porno, Kelljan eventually crafted this into a sort of Bram Stoker parody, although not everyone involved in the production seemed to be aware of this.

The Repertory East Playhouse production of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” that was shuttered last Saturday when its lead actor was fired for confronting a heckler is getting a revival—although not all the original cast has signed on. Three of the four actors in the Rep play’s principal roles will be on stage June 7 for a one-night-only performance of the Tennessee Williams drama. Missy Kaye, who played Big Mama, will not be returning because she made a "commitment prior to being informed of the benefit show," she told Backstage. There was some disagreement among the cast over how John Lacy, who plays Big Daddy, handled a heckler who twice called Anton Troy (pictured), playing Brick, a gay slur during the May 31 performance at Rep in Newhall, about an hour north of Los Angeles. After the second outburst, Lacy broke character, descended the stage and confronted the heckler,...

Every horror-loving teenage boy in the ’80s remembers the first time they saw Mathilda May. It was director Tobe Hooper‘s name and some fantastic-looking gore and effects photos in Fangoria magazine that made Lifeforce a must-see, but by the time the end credits rolled all of that had been forgotten. The film was (and still is) goofy fun, but even today the most memorable aspect of the entire movie is Miss May, in the buff, for roughly 90% of her screen time. If that’s not enough of a reason to give the film a watch the actual plot involves space vampires (Buck Rogers shout out!), zombie-like victims, massive destruction and mayhem in the streets of London, and Patrick Stewart saying the word “naughty” as only he can. Keep reading to see what I learned from the commentary track for Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce. Lifeforce (1985) Commentators: Tobe Hooper (director), Tim Sullivan (moderator) 1. Hooper’s longer cut of...

Much like the dark rides in carnivals and amusement parks of our youth, Tobe Hooper’s The Funhouse, is a slow, yet creepy film, and an intriguing thematic sequel of sorts to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
The simple story takes place over a single night when a double date between Amy and Liz (Elizabeth Berridge and Largo Woodruff) and their respective beaus Buzz and Richie (Cooper Huckabee and Miles Chapin) turns into a nightmare when they become trapped inside the funhouse at the local carnival.
Berridge, the film’s lead, is a likeable actress. She epitomizes “the girl next door” and acts as the conscience of the audience at times, never wanting to bow to the pressure of her friends. Woodruff as the “bad girl” is a nice counter to Berridge’s squeaky-clean character. Although the two are so different, it’s easy to see why Amy likes Liz as Woodruff plays her.

Tobe Hooper has had a very diverse career, and I say that with nary a blurb of hyperbole. For every The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you get Crocodile. I love the majority of his films because they give me the feeling of warm and fuzzy nostalgia. But, with The Funhouse which came out at the height of the slasher craze, he was still shaping his now wild career. And the film is drastically different from some of his other films, yet it still retains some of Hooper’s erraticism. There are crazed characters and most of the carnival folk feel very, very real. Hell, the carnival feels real, it’s like it may have visited your hometown. It’s also a great slow burn film, you get to...

Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse failed to make the impact his earlier Texas Chainsaw Massacre did on horror audiences, but still delivered a few solid shocks for viewers in 1981. Much like Chainsaw, it consists of twisted characters and fun-loving youngsters being brutalized by them. However, this time around carnival workers get a bad rap versus backwoods rednecks like in Hooper's 1974 spine-chiller. Seeing The Funhouse now on Blu-ray doesn't quite deliver the same jarring surprises it did thirty years ago. The horror genre has seen it all since then.

Shares in the tiny Utah-based company are down about 12% in pre-market trading this morning after the network said it will cancel the show, which traces celebrities’ family roots. Ancestry.com’s prominent presence on Wdytya, a partnership with NBC, contributed to a 42.6% spike in its online subscriptions, to 1.87M, in the two years since the show debuted. Ancestry.com CEO Tim Sullivan said in a statement that his company has “a great relationship with the show’s producers, Is or Isn’t Entertainment and Shed Media, and we look forward to exploring other avenues of distribution.” Ancestry.com warned investors in its quarterly earnings report filed this month at the SEC that if the show is cancelled “it could have a negative effect on our business and our stock price.” Related: NBC Brass On Amping Up Comedy, Axing ‘Harry’s Law’ & Keeping ‘Whitney’, ‘Center’...

Alicia Molik has become a mother for the first time. The 30-year-old Australian tennis champion and former world number eight, who is married to Tim Sullivan, gave birth to son Yannik Jude in Perth last week. Molik, who would usually be in Melbourne at this time of year as a player or commentator at the Australian Open, confessed to the Herald Sun that she will probably not continue playing, but hopes to carry on coaching children. "I couldn't imagine I would [return as a mother]," she said. "I'd like to continue really being involved in the development of young kids in the future because I feel like it's my responsibility as well to give back. "I asked them (more)...

Ray Kelllogg’s 1959 schlocker The Killer Shrews is probably best remembered for the laughable titular beasts, actually dogs “dressed” as shrews, but has gone on to b-movie infamy over time via countless video releases and a hilarious Mystery Science Theater 3000 roast. In this day and age, where years between sequels is hardly a concern (notably on follow-ups to Hg Lewis films, for some reason: 41 years between Lewis’ Two Thousand Maniacs (’64) and Tim Sullivan’s 2001 Maniacs (’05); and 39 years between his Blood Feast (’63) and its follow-up Blood Feast 2 (’02), but these are just two examples), it is no surprise that filmmaker Steve Latshaw would give new life to the cult of Shrew with Return Of The Killer Shrews.
Latshaw has reveled in the off-beat his whole career, helming b-movie goodies Dark Universe in 1993, and Jack-o in 1995, and writing dozens more since. On Shrews he reunites with star James Best, with whom Latshaw...

Megan Mullally has confirmed that the Party Down movie is a go, and that she will be a part of it when it starts shooting late spring. The entire cast is expected back with the possible exception of Jane Lynch.
At the winter TCAs, Fox confirmed that while the seniors are graduating on Glee, there will not be a spin-off, and all the characters will be returning next year. “There will not be a Glee spinoff,” Reilly continued, “but those characters will graduate and it’s led to a very interesting idea that I think is going to really give us something cool to dig into next season.”
The same briefing finally officially stuck a stake in the heart of Allen Gregory.

Almost everyone knows a song or two from ’60s psychedelic rock group The Doors, be it “The End,” “Light My Fire,” “Hello, I Love You,” or some other great tune. It’s also entirely possible that you’ve seen Oliver Stone‘s The Doors, a controversial biopic of lead singer Jim Morrison — portrayed there by Val Kilmer in one of his best performances. Many of Morrison‘s friends and family members have often chastised the film for what they feel is the portrayal of a selfish, drug-addled disaster, which they’ve argued as being inaccurate.
With erroneous depictions being a sticking point, it should be interesting to see how they react to The Poet in Exile, a recently-announced adaptation of a novel by Ray Manzarek, who just so happens to be the former Doors keyboardist. His novel presents the popular theory that Morrison faked his own death, then expands upon...

On "The Dr. Oz Show" Wednesday (Sept. 14), Dr. Mehmet Oz did a segment with a New Jersey lab that found what Oz claims are "troubling" levels of arsenic in many brands of apple juice.
The Fda has responded with its own tests that it says show no such thing. Their statement reads, "There is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices. And Fda has been testing them for years."
Thursday (Sept. 15), Dr. Oz's med school classmate Dr. Richard Besser, a previous acting head of the Cdc, was on "Good Morning America" saying Oz's report was the equivalent of yelling "fire" in a movie theater. Video below.
What the Fda maintains Dr. Oz failed to do was distinguish between the two forms of arsenic - organic and inorganic. Organic arsenic is naturally found in water, food and soil and passes through the body without incident. Inorganic...

This morning , we brought your attention to Hellions , a new film in development from director Gavin Heffernan, executive producer Tim Sullivan and Paul Lenart of Storyteller Pictures. A new slice of concept art - by Adam Bolt - has floated our way along with this description. Knock-knock, here comes Hellions. Home alone on Halloween, a 17-year-old girl must survive a night from hell when three malevolent trick-or-treaters come knocking. Described as an eighties-horror throwback with the edgy thematic of Juno and the intensity of The Strangers, Hellions .will boldly push the limits of the genre while blending the pain of adolescent growth and the mayhem of monster-horror.

Filmmaker Tim Sullivan is the kind of director who truly loves what he does. Making horror movies is in every fiber of Tim's being, and while some in his position would prefer to keep their earlier works from seeing the light of day, he'd rather celebrate them. Case in point ... Dracula 1980.
"Since first mentioning Dracula 1980 here at Shock N Roll, a lot of folks out there have asked me how to see this "lost classic", writes Sullivan. "I use that term with tongue firmly planted in cheek, as this little Super 8 project I did at the tender age of 16 with my buddy Tom Davis was a passionate first effort with me doing my best Chris Lee- not exactly a lost classic along the lines of London After Midnight. However, it definitely is something I wouldn't have minded seeing again- but I knew that the Super 8 film that it...

In Cut,Print a group of ambitious filmmakers set out to create the world’s first reality horror movie. Their plan is simple: they’d offer an active serial killer complete anonymity and a worldwide platform from which to display his work in exchange for genuine footage of his grisly crimes. What ensues is a hellish game of cat and mouse as a cryptic filmmaker, known only as The Maestro, comes out from hiding in search of his “perfect shot”.
Starring Vince Orlando, Randy Godwin, Ken Foree, and James Ohngren, the film is directed by Nathan Nose and produced by actor Jordan Yale. The film is presented by Horror Icon Tim Sullivan, of Field Of Screams fame, who discovered the filmmakers and aided in the post-production process to bring the film to the screen:

Directed by: Tim Sullivan
Written by: Tim Sullivan, Chris Kobin, Christopher Tuffin
Cast: Bill Moseley, Lin Shaye, Christa Campbell, Andrea Leon, Nivek Ogre
If you think the worst horror film of 2010 was the remake/reboot/raping of Nightmare on Elm Street, you obviously haven't seen 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams, the sequel to 2005's remake of the H. G. Lewis drive-in classic. I'd suggest you leave it that way, as returning director Tim Sullivan unleashes the cinematic equivalent of a night of excessive drinking. By the time the credits roll, you'll feel nauseated and find yourself a few billion brain cells lighter.
The movie starts as the ghosts of Pleasant Valley rematerializing for the anniversary of their death at the hands of rogue Yankee soldiers. But they discover the supply of Northerners to kill and consume has dried up, as the local sheriff has pulled the detour signs that drive tourists their way.

Legendary B-movie producer David F. Friedman passed away on Monday in a nursing home in Anniston, Alabama. He was 87 years old.
Although director Herschell Gordon Lewis is typically credited as the Godfather of Gore, i.e. the man who invented the splatter movie with his infamous 1963 horror flick Blood Feast, the film was in fact a collaboration between Lewis and Friedman. The two men came up with the general story while Lewis directed it and Friedman produced.
The two men had originally started out making “nudie cutie” and nudist colony cheapo films with titles such as The Adventures of Lucky Pierre (1961) and Nature’s Playmates (1962), until Lewis struck upon the idea of making a film that included the kind of graphic violence that Hollywood studios had shied away from.
Friedman produced Blood Feast with just $24,500 and the film was allegedly a runaway box office smash, encouraging the two gore-mongers to...

One of the most prolific horror film producers in the game has taken his final curtain call and is sadly no longer with us. You may not know his name, but we know you're very familiar with his work.
According to The New York Times long time Herschell Gordon Lewis collaborator and splatter film pioneer, producer David F. Friedman, passed away at age 87 on Monday at his home in Anniston, Alabama.
The man's resume is as long as it is impressive with titles like Blood Feast, Color Me Blood Red, Two Thousand Maniacs, Ilsa: She-Wolf of the S.S., and most recently Tim Sullivan's 2001 Maniacs and 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams. The man was from the old school of fearless filmmaking and lived his life to the fullest until the very end.

Anyone who knows what a Masters of Horror dinner is also knows that Mick Garris is probably cringing as he reads this sentence, because I've been somewhat of a thorn in his side regarding how many women attend them.
I've actually had Joe Lynch yell at me (virtually, anyway) and James Gunn chastise me publicly for saying that women don't get invited to the Masters of Horror dinners.
But I'm not bitching about that today, so Mick and James and Joe can relax. This is not a critique of them and their invitational habits. What I'm bitching about is how few women horror directors are actually available for them to invite.
What Is a Masters of Horror dinner, you ask, layperson?

What exactly counts as an underground horror movie? Frankly, that’s a tough distinction to make. “Underground” films are generally, by definition, genre-less concoctions. But, if one wanted to use a broad definition of “underground” to mean a low-budget film that didn’t enjoy a large theatrical release, well, that counts for a wide breadth of what used to be called “Direct to DVD” features.
According the website Instant Watcher, Netflix currently has 576 movies available for streaming in the horror genre. The streaming horror movie titles I’m listing below are indeed low-budget films that have flown under the radar because they didn’t enjoy large theatrical releases. But, also, they each have an almost indefinable quality that sets them apart from their peers.
They’re a little more imaginative, particularly for their low budgets. A little stranger. A little more grotesque. Quirkier. More outlandish. However you want to describe them,...

As UK film-makers and members of Directors UK, we are greatly saddened to learn of the imprisonment of acclaimed Iranian film-makers Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof (Iran jails film-maker who dared to back opposition for six years, 21 December). We strongly condemn the actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran in seeking to temper free speech and believe that a greater understanding of the people of Iran at home and abroad can only result from the unhindered expression of creativity in film, media and the arts in all their forms.
We express our sense of solidarity with Jafar and Mohammad and call upon the Iranian government to immediately rescind the sentences and to release them without delay.

In all honesty, I hate writing these “worst of” lists, mostly because I know the filmmakers and talent involved never set out to make a bad film. Sometimes, it just all goes wrong. And while, my mother use to say “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all“, but sorry mom, I write for a movie website and my readers depend on me to save them a buck.
