The Real O’Neals has an uphill battle on its hands, and it’s the same battle that has faced such shows as The Middle, and Martha Plimpton‘s last series, Raising Hope. Unfortunately, it’s the same battle that has also faced countless shows that you don’t remember, because most shows these days can’t overcome the degree of difficulty.
The problem these shows face is that they need a while to get going, and there’s nothing about the pilot that’s going to suck you in enough to demand that you not only watch, but pull your friends along as well.
As if the genre of television shows that are ultimately “hanging with a family” isn’t dated enough, and tricky enough to get off the ground, The Real O’Neals focuses on the irritating world of holier-than-thous, and puts them through the ringer.

Exclusive: There has been a major change in the relationship dynamic of veteran comedy writing duo Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, and it is the subject of a comedy project they have sold to ABC. Titled Changes, the single-camera project is written/exec produced by Sternin and Jennifer Ventimilia, which is Ventimilia’s new name after she underwent gender reassignment. Based on the duo’s real-life friendship, Changes revolves around two guys whose 30-year friendship was rocked when one of them became a woman. Sternin and Ventimilia’s partnership echoes the Wachowskis, who also continued to work together following Larry’s gender reassignment. Changes is one of two comedies Sternin and Ventimilia have sold to ABC through their overall deal at ABC Studios. The other is a multi-camera sitcom based on the adolescent memories of journalist/activist Dan Savage. It explores a contemporary family that comes together by falling apart.
