"Before the phenomenon, this icon started as an idea." Since he first appeared decades ago, Hellboy has helped transport readers into a fascinating world filled with monsters, mayhem, and mesmerizing magic, but even more fascinating is the inspiring story of the man who brought Hellboy to life: Mike Mignola.
Thankfully, filmmakers Jim Demonakos and Kevin Hanna, along with an all-star creative roster of interviewees, tell the story behind the iconic creator of Hellboy and the ever-expanding Mignolaverse in the new documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, which has just launched an official Kickstarter campaign!
Featuring extensive interviews with notable creators such as Neil Gaiman, Rebecca Sugar, Doug Jones, Tara McPherson, Victor Lavalle, Christopher Golden, and Mignola himself, Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters will show fans the positive influence Mignola's work has had on generations of creators, while also highlighting the brilliant mind behind the Mignolaverse like never before!

The brainy 47-year-old son of a British political cartoonist, Alex Garland made his name with novels “The Beach” and “The Tesseract” before moving on to a tortuous relationship with Hollywood. After Leonardo DiCaprio starred in Danny Boyle’s movie version of “The Beach” (Fox), Garland turned to screenwriting on two original grim visions of the future for Boyle and Fox Searchlight, zombiefest “28 Days Later” and sci-fi space trip “Sunshine,” both starring Cillian Murphy, followed by 2012 comic-book flop “Dredd” (Lionsgate).
Backed by Focus Features, Garland’s stunning directorial debut “Ex Machina,” a tense sci-fi three-hander starring Oscar Isaac as a genius robot designer, Alicia Vikander as his wily femme bot, and Domnhall Gleeson as the gullible man who falls for her, was inexplicably rejected for theatrical release and was taken on by A24. Focus president Peter Schlessel lost his job when the movie scored $25 million domestic and two Oscar nominations (including...

From the production stable of Roger Corman, 1982’s Forbidden World (aka Mutant) delivered an Alien-inspired tale oozing with both gooey gore and sci-fi scares. Low on budget but big on schlock, the film gained cult status due to its camp violence, gratuitous nudity, and the syrupy synthesized soundtrack courtesy of Susan Justin. Turing the original masters into delicious 180 grams of vinyl, Death Waltz commissioned London’s Kimberley (aka "The Holla") Holladay for the cover art, bringing in an artist whose swift penmanship was ideal for capturing the macabre marrow of the film.
Unlike the majority of artwork commissions contracted by the label, it was Holladay who extended her hand to tango with Death Waltz. “I got involved in the project for Death Waltz Records after approaching Spencer [Hickman, the manager for both Mondo Records & Death Waltz Recording Co.] in regards to doing some artwork for the label," Holladay reflects. "I had been collecting the titles and really liked what he did.

In a little over three months, the killer convoy of George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road will roar into theaters with engines rumbling and gas pedals slammed to the floor, but it turns out that cinemas won’t be the only places fans can go to see Max Rockatansky, his apocalyptic pals, and ferocious foes.
Comic shops and bookstores will also have their fair share of Miller’s world to offer up to the masses, as Vertigo and DC announced today they are coming together with co-writer/director Miller to release the Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists hardcover and four prequel comic books that feature characters of the new movie before their wild ride through the sand-swirling wastelands.

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road looks so insane on so many awesome levels. It's easily one of my most anticipated films of the year, and it's going to give audiences one hell of an adrenaline rush punch to the face.
DC Comics' Vertigo has collaborated with Miller on developing a couple of books for fans to enjoy. There is a hardcover book called Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists, which will feature art by 65 famous artists that were influenced by the world of Mad Max. And there's a prequel comic that will focus on four of the characters from the upcoming film.
Thanks to /Film, we have the cover art from these publications to share with you. The one above and the one directly below are the front and back covers of Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists. The third is from the comic Mad Max: Fury Road...

The Flash | DC | W: Brian Buccellato | W+A: Francis Manapul
I’ve held off on getting the singles of this series so that I can pick up a lovely hardback of Francis Manapul’s gorgeous work. Like Jw Williams III on Batwoman, Manapul plays around with the comic page format to aid in the story telling process, in the process creating some stunning images.
Batwoman | DC | W: Jh Williams III, Hayden Blackman | A: Jh Williams III
Again like The Flash I’ve held off on getting the singles of this series so that I have more reason to buy the beautiful hardback that I know is coming in 2012. I cannot wait to get my hands on the first arc of the new Batwoman series, and see just how far Williams can push the comic medium.

Paramount Pictures is running unannounced pop-up screenings of Jason Reitman‘s new film Young Adult in cities around North America. As a special bonus, Reitman and Paramount enlisted the curatorial services of Los Angeles’ famous pop culture art gallery Gallery1988 [1] to pick the artists and produce limited edition pieces of art for the surprise screenings. There have been pop-up screenings in Toronto [2], Minneapolis [3], and Chicago [4], each with an accompanying poster. Tonight’s screening is in Austin (at the Alamo Drafthouse, naturally), and as at the other previous screenings attendees get a unique piece of limited edition artwork. For the Austin show, Tara McPherson was hired to design the poster. Check it out in full after the break.
