She studied violin at the Royal College of Music in London, but did not get involved with conducting until she received her master's from Indiana University.
Her two sisters are also professional musicians. Their father, Yip Wai-hong, founded Hong Kong's first children's choir.
She is the conductor of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta.
