Though I don't cherish the form I've seen quite a few jukebox musicals in my day. Sometimes they take the biographical route like Jersey Boys. Often they'll sift through the lyrics of some artist's catalogue hoping to yank out phrases and threads from which they can stitch together a frankenstein story. Mammia Mia is either the apotheosis or the nadir of that latter form, depending on your perspective. But what if the jukebox isn't beholden to one composer? Prince of Broadway, which just opened at the Samuel Friedman in NYC, is devoted to the producer Harold Prince who did not write music. So what you have is a greatest hits of, uh, dozens of different composers from a wide range of musicals. If this were a CD it might be called "Now That's What I Call Broadway, Vol. Whatever"

Fun Home 5th Avenue Theare, Seattle Through July 30th
When it comes to Broadway-caliber theatre productions, cities like Seattle get what New York is willing to give them. Very often this means local audiences only get a taste of the most mainstream, spectacular efforts the Great White Way has to offer, remaining unexposed to the more challenging and innovative works that do sometimes still happen there. As a result, theatre (particularly musical theatre) is relegated to its niche enclave of dedicated fans along with a wider audience of casual theatre goers who come knowing what to expect. While presenting an enjoyable way to pass a few evening hours this can also bear a disappointing stamp of mediocrity. Fun Home, currently playing at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre, is a happy exception to this trend.
Like Next to Normal before it, Fun Home works to break the preconceived notions of what musical theatre is and can be.

Robert De Niro has pretty much done it all in Hollywood and now he’s turning to theater to make his Broadway directorial debut. The actor, who starred and directed the 1993 film “A Bronx Tale,” will co-direct a new musical adaptation with stage veteran Jerry Zaks.
“A Bronx Tale: The Musical” is based on the one-man show written by Chazz Palminteri, which centered on his childhood on the streets of the New York neighborhood and his conflict between his father and a local Mob boss.

“It’s a Bronx boy’s dream come true for ‘A Bronx Tale, The Musical’ to move to Broadway!” Palminteri said in a statement. “It’s a great story and a great story can morph into many different forms – a one-man show, a movie and a now, a musical. We get the best of both worlds with De Niro having directed the film and Zaks having directed the one-man show. There are only three things you can do to an audience – make them laugh, make them cry or you can scare them. In ‘A Bronx Tale, The Musical’ we do all three.”
The musical made its debut in February at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse and received positive reviews. The Broadway show will be produced by Tommy Mottola, with the Dodgers (“Jersey Boys”) and De Niro’s Tribeca Productions.
Alan Menkin and lyricist Glenn Slater will compose the score. Palminteri will pen the book, set design is by Beowulf Boritt, costumes by William Ivey Long, and lighting by Howell Binkley, who just won his second Tony Award for “Hamilton.” Sergio Trujillo is in charge of choreography.

In what is certainly the most anticipated "Carpool Karaoke" instalment, Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda joins James Corden for a ride to Beacon Theater, beginning with the opening song from the hit Broadway show (prompting Corden to show off those rapping skills he's been honing in his "Drop the Mic" segments). But it doesn't stop there — three more Broadway stars join them along the way. Audra McDonald, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Jane Krakowski all hop in the backseat to join the two for more Broadway hits, ranging from Rent to Les Misérables to Jersey Boys. Along the way, the stars offer Corden some advice for his Tony Award hosting gig this week ("It's a long evening, so just have fun," McDonald says while Ferguson assures Corden that it's "the nicest audience). The whole segment is charming and endlessly watchable, so check it out below:...

When celebrities go see Hamilton, they often commemorate the experience by signing the production's poster of Alexander Hamilton, usually with inoffensive things, like "Loved it!" or "So inspirational!" Danny DeVito did not do that. Instead, he wrote some real questionable stuff on Alexander Hamilton's wiener, but as he explained to Seth Meyers Wednesday night, he did it out of love and artistic admiration. Ten bucks says, if you go backstage at any current Broadway production, there is mysterious smutty graffiti on someone's junk: The Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys, The Color Purple, you name it. They're all probably marked up with "bad handwriting." And as for the posters that don't have them yet … Danny DeVito waits.

There are no bad years for film. Well, until the last strip of celluloid shrivels up within 12 months of the Internet being devoured by the mother of all computer worms, no year can go by without a title, a name, a performance, or a breakthrough that permanently reframes discussion of the artform. The biggest movies of the year may be the ones with the flashiest effects, broadest marketing, and most teeth, but cinema, like life, finds a way.
There are, however, years of film that are more exciting to remember, or more specifically personal to a viewer than others. It matters as much about where you are in your life as it does the industry’s output, so it’s no one’s fault that,...

Slowly but surely, Hollywood seems to be dead set on reviving the musical. One would think that it'd be easy to adapt a popular show into a popular film, but the team behind last year's silver screen adaptation of Jersey Boys could tell you that the formula doesn't work that easily. Which is probably why it's a good thing that The Book Of Mormon hasn't been optioned just yet, and from what original cast member Josh Gad had to say, the wait is going to be quite a bit longer. I was given the chance to speak with Gad during this weekend's press rounds for Pixels, which opens this Friday. During our conversation, I couldn't help but ask if he'd heard any further news on a feature film adaptation of Matt Stone and Trey Parker's Broadway phenomenon. While there was nothing new to report on any further planning, Gad...
