The star of one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time has waded into one of the holiday season’s most divisive annual debates: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
Peter Billingsley says yes — and in the season finale episode of his A Cinematic Christmas Journey podcast, which releases Dec. 15, he does his best to convince Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont.
“I mean, they didn’t think Die Hard was a Christmas movie. They happened to set it then, but the filmmakers weren’t intending that,” Billingsley explains. Instead, like many classics over the decades, its meaning to fans evolved. “This movie creates its own life, is in the culture and, over time, people discover it. It’s pretty great to see how that life can move in ways that the filmmakers never intended, or even ever imagined.” (Watch an exclusive clip from the episode below.)

Steve Bryne’s life and career are proof that having a good sense of humor can get you a long way in life. Well-known for his skills as a stand-up comedian and actor, Steve has made an entire career out of making people laugh and keeping them entertained. He is most famous for creating the show Sullivan & Son which he also wrote and acted in. Needless to say, Steve is the kind of guy who can do it all. His most recent project is the 2020 comedy film, The Opening Act, which he directed and wrote. Even though he doesn’t

Imagine, for a moment, that a stand-up comic is just like a superhero. On stage, he’s a master of the universe, armored and impervious, slinging jokes like lightning bolts. He defeats all adversaries, from hecklers to the potential indifference of the audience; laughter, of course, is his way of killing. If that’s what a stand-up comic is, then “The Opening Act,” Steve Byrne’s wryly likable shoestring indie comedy about a young man trying to make it in the world of stand-up, might be described as a stand-up-comedy origin story.
Will Chu, played by Jimmy O. Yang of “Silicon Valley,” is an aspiring comic who’s been doing open-mic nights in his small hometown of Steubenville, Ohio. He’s got some funny material. He grew up watching stand-up on TV with his immigrant father (they bonded over it like sports), and he knows the form, works on his bits,...

Generally speaking, I hope that films are good — not all are, and watching enough of them will help one come to terms with this fact quickly enough. Barring this, I can hope that some aspect of a film is good: the writing, acting, camerawork and so on. If those fail, I can at least […]

There is a very good mix of theatrical, digital, VOD and hybrid releases this weekend starting with The Kid Detective from Stage 6 Films starring Adam Brody and Sophie Nélisse.
Written and directed by Evan Morgan, the movie is about exactly what the title suggests: a kid detective. Brody plays a once-celebrated kid detective who is now 31 and isn’t exactly bathing in fame. However, he continues to solve the same trivial mysteries as he navigates his hangovers and wades in puddles of self-pity. All of this changes when a naïve client brings him his first “adult” case in which he attempts to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend. The film also stars Sarah Sutherland, Tzi Ma, Wendy Crewson, Jonathan Whittaker and Peter MacNeill.

Maybe this stand-up comedy thing just isn’t for Jimmy O. Yang. In his new comedy “The Opening Act,” the “Silicon Valley” and “Crazy Rich Asians” star learns the tough reality of life on the road as a comic.
The film directed and written by Steve Byrne and produced by Vince Vaughn and Peter Billingsley follows Yang as Will Chu, an aspiring stand-up comedian who gets the opportunity to open on the road for his hero Billy G., played with flair by Cedric the Entertainer.
“You look at the road ahead of me right now, and it’s in a cubicle selling things I don’t believe in,” Yang says in the trailer. “The only silver lining is I can’t possibly hang myself in a cubicle.”
But things get off to a rough start quickly when he can’t impress some morning radio DJs, hecklers or other drunk comedy groupies,...

Will Chu has it all – the job, the girl – but what’s missing is his true passion in life, to become a stand-up comedian. When he gets the opportunity he’s been waiting for, the emcee slot on the road opening for his hero Billy G., the realities of life on the stage come crashing in. Between relentless hecklers, drunk comedy groupies and hard-to-impress morning radio DJs, things get off to a rough start. Even if he can take the opportunity to learn from his idols and overcome the challenges, Will still needs to decide if he should continue with the life he has, or pursue the one he has always dreamt of – the life of a comedian.

Comedy and industry politics mixed Tuesday night at The Hollywood Improv, site of a fundraiser for SAG-AFTRA candidate Matthew Modine and his Membership First slate.
“He looks like Hal Holbrook,” Tom Arnold joked. “He’s aged 100 years.”
Modine is challenging incumbent SAG-aftra President Gabrielle Carteris and three other candidates for the top elected post at the 160,000-member performers union. With two more weeks of campaigning before voting concludes on Aug. 28, the funds raised are earmarked for mailings to members.
Modine noted he’s been so busy that he’s lacked the time to see a dentist about a missing tooth. “Running for office isn’t what I expected,” he said before taking the stage.
Lisa Ann Walter hosted with comedy provided by Arnold, Rick Overton, Cathy Ladman, Julie Goldman, Vinny Fasline, Candice Thompson, and Steve Byrne.

David Spade’s “Lights Out,” Comedy Central’s latest attempt to fill its 11:30 p.m. time slot, averaged 270,000 total viewers in its premiere week.
Among adults 18-49, which is the key demo for advertisers on entertainment programming, “Lights Out” averaged a 0.17 rating from Monday-Thursday. Spade played slightly better among adults 25-54, averaging a 0.20 rating.
None of those are great numbers.

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Jake Gyllenhaal played Slapjack Tuesday night on "The Tonight Show" -- perfect for the boxing star of "Southpaw" -- but his "uncouth" back-scratching interview was even more fun. First, here's the Slapjack game:
Now to the classic interview. Not sure if you saw the photo, but Jake got called out by the paparazzi for scratching his back with a fork; this was deemed "uncouth,", so -- on "The Tonight Show" -- Jake responded. "Come on. You take a picture behind my back and then call me uncouth?" He then defended the many uses of the fork, including back scratching. "It's not just used to eat with, you can pick other things up with it.

Despite the fact that production on TBS' Sullivan & Son has been temporarily shut down, the second season of the sitcom kick off on Thursday, June 13th, at 10pm.
The cable channel had previously indicated that Sullivan & Son would return this summer but that was looking questionable. Star Steve Byrne suffered an injury to his face and his jaw had to be wired shut for six weeks.
This led to a shutdown of production on Season two until June. Apparently they already had enough episodes in the can to make their start date.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to the return of Sullivan & Son on TBS?

It led his jaw being wired shut for six weeks, and a shutdown of production on Season 2 of the Warner Horizon-produced series until June. TBS said today though that the new season of Sullivan & Son will premiere Thursday, June 13 at 10 Pm, meaning the series will make its delivery date.
