While having five past winners present the acting categories once again went over well at the 2024 Oscars like it did in 2009, the Best Actress category will present a challenge toward optics should it become an annual tradition. There are only two women of color in the 96 years the Oscars have existed who have ever won the award. Would Halle Berry, the only Black Best Actress winner, and Michelle Yeoh, the only Asian Best Actress winner, swap presenting duties year by year? Otherwise, it would be an all-white lineup of presenters.
Not that other categories have a perfect history of diversity, either, but the problem is much less stark. Part of the reason why the segment works in the first place is that it sends a subtle message that any kind of person can win. If it were only women of one race up there, that intended message would be lost.

First things first, just what everyone wants to read the morning after Oscar Sunday: stats. At this year’s ceremony — which, thanks to an earlier start time, blessedly wrapped up before 10:30 p.m. Et — 13 women won Oscars. 11 of those winners enjoyed their first Academy Award win ever. Oppenheimer dominated the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday (March 10), winning seven Oscars, including best picture, after going into the ceremony with 13 nominations.

Godzilla Minus One created history on January 23 at the Oscars by being the first movie in the 70-year history of the Godzilla franchise to receive a nomination for Best Visual Effects. As of now, director Takashi Yamazaki, along with the rest of the crew, holds the distinction of being the first Japanese recipient of the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. A much-awaited win!
In addition to their exceptional work on Godzilla Minus One, Masaki Takahashi, Tatsuji Nojima, Kiyoko Shibuya, and Takashi Yamazaki were recognized with awards for Best Visual Effects. The Oscars are done for another year and Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy are newly minted Oscar winners for Oppenheimer! Overall, it was an expected and welcome result, with Oppenheimer also taking home Best Picture, while Poor Things star Emma Stone won a second Oscar, in a surprising, but well-earned result. One man is preparing for a “quite unbelievable” Oscars night, having found himself nominated three times this year in the same category.
Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould is up against himself twice over, after being recognised in the category for his work on three movies – Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, The Creator and Napoleon.
Corbould has two previous Oscars to his name – for Gladiator and Gravity. He told the BBC that this year’s close-to-hand competition could be “the kiss of death,” and said:

Best Visual Effects is one of my personal favorite Oscar categories, but this year it’s one without a single Best Picture nominee in the bunch, which isn’t that uncommon — it happened most recently in 2020. Not that it necessarily matters, since not a single movie that has won Best Picture has also won this category going all the way back to Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. In fact, that was the last Best Picture winner to even be nominated in this category.

The special effects team behind “Godzilla Minus One‘s” jaw-dropping final battle wanted the spectacle to be a “religious” experience. The climax of that vitally important sequence in the Oscar-nominated monster movie involves the total destruction of the titular titan.
“That moment was probably the one we discussed the most and had a hard time landing it,” explained director, writer, and visual effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki. The 35-strong team of artists considered 100 different ways of getting the desired result, an exercise he considered the most challenging to achieve.
“We wanted to make it a sacred, almost religious moment, where you see the light rays and imagine what this moment would be like. There was this photo-realism happening but also this ceremony, and we needed them to integrate those feelings,” the filmmaker recalled, recounting the sequence where Godzilla crumbles into the ocean.
The result is one of the reasons “Godzilla Minus One...

After stealing the show at the VFX Oscar bake-off on January 13 at the Academy Museum, “Godzilla Minus One” has gone from sleeper to potential frontrunner. Director and VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki effectively emphasized how his small team of 35 artists completed 610 shots on a minuscule budget (reportedly $15 million for the entire production). He wowed the branch members with his demo reel of Godzilla’s fierce destruction, his creative ability to overcome his limitations, his graciousness toward his artists, and his dry wit.
Indeed, by outmaneuvering the other studio Goliaths with his underdog “Godzilla,” Yamazaki earned the biggest applause and now has momentum going into the nominations on January 23. His film has already grabbed more than $50 million at the U.S. box office, with a grittier black-and-white theatrical version set for January 26. Godzilla Minus One is a blessing to Toho’s kaiju franchise and a towering accomplishment for the entire kaiju subgenre. Director and writer Takashi Yamazaki respects the balance between monster mashes and human perspectives, unlike our blockbuster domestic efforts, which oftentimes lean toward larger-than-life action thrills (although Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is off to an inspiring start). After thirty-plus films and nearly seventy years, Toho confidently delivers one of their best Godzilla movies to date. Other franchises can’t sustain momentum over a measly trilogy, where Toho’s city-smashing icon shows no signs of retreating to depths unknown.

Unless he’s palling around with Minilla or Godzilla Jr., it’s hard not to see Godzilla as anything other than a 20,000-ton, fire-breathing metaphor. When used well, that symbolic weight crystalizes the terror of living in a world in which 100,000 people can have their lives snuffed out by atomic weapons. When used poorly, well, Godzilla fights a smog monster.
This tension between human weight and the sheer awesomeness of giant monsters has plagued all variations of the franchise since the first sequel to the 1954 original, Godzilla Raids Again (1955). More recently, it has stymied Legendary Pictures, the studio responsible for the lackluster MonsterVerse series, which includes 2014’s Godzilla and the current Apple TV+ series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Time and again, the MonsterVerse distracts from their kaiju—excuse me, MUTOs—with dull human drama that not even charismatic performers such as Kurt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry, and Vera Farmiga can save.
