During WWII, he joined the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He was recruited to learn Bulgarian and was sent behind enemy lines in Bulgaria, where he later served in the British Foreign Office. After the war, he worked in the British Information Research Department, which countered Soviet propaganda, and with the United Nations, before pursuing his writing full time.
