More changes are afoot at CNN.
The cable news channel is losing one of its longest-tenured on-air journalists, national correspondent Suzanne Malveaux, who told colleagues Friday that she will depart the cable news channel to spend more time with her family, and to pursue new endeavors.
“After 20 years of delivering groundbreaking stories for the audiences of CNN, I’ve made the heartfelt decision to put myself and my family first and to pursue my long-desired professional passions: using storytelling to promote wellness, resiliency and social justice,” Mealveaux wrote in a note Friday morning.
Malveaux, whose partner is White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, says she approached CNN executives last fall about pursuing new opportunities and projects, and a bout with Covid around the holidays crystallized that decision.
“I’m thrilled one of those projects will be a collaboration with a great grandson of Nelson Mandela to tell stories and spotlight...

Suzanne Malveaux, who has been an anchor and correspondent for CNN for the past 20 years, is leaving the network.
In a note to staffers on Friday, she said that she had “made the heartfelt decision to put myself and my family first and to pursue my long-desired professional passions: using storytelling to promote wellness, resiliency and social justice.”
Malveaux is the latest veteran to depart the network. Barbara Starr, longtime Pentagon correspondent, exited last month. Others, including Martin Savidge, were part of the round of layoffs in early December, affecting hundreds of staffers. Although Malveaux’s name was rumored then as one of the on-air figures who was exiting, a source said that her departure was unrelated to the layoffs.
She wrote in her memo that she approached CNN in the fall of 2022 “about focusing on my family and possibly pursuing some new opportunities,” and that the network “supported me.

“The View” host Sunny Hostin had some pointed words for guest host Lindsey Granger on Friday’s show, wondering out loud how anyone could be “a Black Republican.”
The comment came during a discussion of Karine Jean-Pierre, who was just appointed to be the new White House press secretary. The panel was talking about whether Jean-Pierre’s relationship with Suzanne Malveaux, who is a journalist for CNN, is a conflict of interest.
While Granger called into question the potential conflict of interest, Ana Navarro pointed out the many texts that have been disclosed of Fox News host Sean Hannity speaking regularly (and frankly) with Donald Trump when he was in the White House, essentially saying it’s hypocritical to zero in on Jean-Pierre’s relationship given Trump’s close relationship with Fox News personalities.
“I know this may be a novel idea for somebody who’s a supporter of Trump,...

When White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre first stood before the media in the White House briefing room last month, the moment made history: She was the first African-American woman to do so in 30 years and the first LGBTQ woman to do so, period.
While the briefing itself played out as many of the others during Joe Biden’s administration, it was enough of a moment to draw reporters’ notice and the presence of a special guest: Judy Smith, who made that history three decades earlier as the first Black woman to lead a briefing and, more recently, was the inspiration for the ABC series Scandal.
“Standing in support. Sisterhood. Always,” Smith wrote on Twitter about the moment.
Jean-Pierre, 46, already was a familiar face to viewers and news junkies, as an MSNBC political analyst and as chief public affairs officer for MoveOn. That is not such an unusual path to the West Wing,...

Jake Tapper, the Washington-based correspondent for CNN, will likely get a new spotlight at the network after it said it would expand his weekday program to two hours and make him the lead anchor for all Washington events. The move is part of a broader shakeup of the cable-news outlet’s Washington coverage, which has taken over more of its schedule in the last few months of the Trump administration.

Although Larry David had impersonated Senator Bernie Sanders brilliantly multiple times on “Saturday Night Live,” the men’s resemblance was written off as nothing but a joke. After all, they’re both older Jewish men from New York. Of course they’re similar.
On Tuesday night’s premiere of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” though, they discovered they have far more in common than just looks. After running a DNA test on the two, host Gates revealed that they share significantly long sequences of identical DNA. In short, they’re related.

In a CNN interview Friday, former President Jimmy Carter came to the defense of embattled chef Paula Deen, whose food empire has crumbled in the wake of a polarizing racism scandal.
Deen and Carter both grew up in rural towns in Georgia, about 40 miles apart. "Turns out, that they are actually good friends," said CNN's Suzanne Malveaux.
"She was maybe excessively honest in saying that she had in the past, 30 years ago, used this terrible word," Carter told CNN. "I think she has been punished, perhaps overly severely, for her honesty in admitting it and for the use of the word in the distant past. She's apologized profusely."
Carter said that he advised her to "let the dust settle and to make apologies." "My heart goes out her," he said, "but, of course, there's no condoning the use of a word that abuses other people."
