“Mank” is the only film in contention at the 2021 Oscars to break the double digit barrier in the nominations count. This Netflix period picture reaped a leading 10 bids. In a six-way tied for second place with, appropriately enough, six nominations apiece are “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” All seven of these films are up for Best Picture. That race is rounded out by five-time contender “Promising Young Woman.”

Approached for Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria—an homage to Dario Argento’s giallo classic—makeup designer Mark Coulier was put to one specific test. Could he transform Tilda Swinton, one of the industry’s most notable shapeshifters, into a man? A prosthetics wizard, Coulier had, over the years, taken on the vast, fantastical worlds of Harry Potter, The Mummy Returns and Fantastic Beasts. He’d turned Robert De Niro into Frankenstein’s monster, and Meryl Streep into Margaret Thatcher. He’d even turned Swinton into an elderly woman, the memorable Madame D. of Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. But the prospect of believably transforming the actress into a man—or rather, a man playing another man—was radically different. To convince Guadagnino that he could execute a metamorphosis on which the film hinged, Coulier would meet with Swinton to conduct a series of early makeup tests.

We'll begin tonight's Night Cap with some behind-the-scenes information pertaining to The Dark Knight Rises. To be more specific, the film's villain Bane as played by Tom Hardy and what we didn't see in the final film. Speaking with GQ (via Slashfilm), costume designer Lindy Hemming discusses a scene pertaining to Bane's origin story that wasn't in the final film: The thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn't got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he's learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he's wearing an early version of his waist belt. It's showing support, but it's not the finished one he eventually wears.

One thing I would have liked to see in The Dark Knight Rises was a bit more of origin story for Bane. I would have liked to see what Nolan's version of his origin was. For the most part Bane's background was kind of a mystery, I thought maybe Nolan did that on purpose to keep the character mysterious like his take on The Joker. As it turns out, there were scenes that were shot of Bane's origin, but they ended up being cut out of the final movie edit.
Thanks to the film's costume designer, Lindy Hemming we now know a little bit more about Bane's background, and what we didn't see in the movie. Here's what she had to say in an interview with GQ,

Sebastian Lochmann was given the task of designing the nasty scars that litter Bane's back, from the neck down to the lumbar. The prosthetic is meant to convey numerous amounts of operations that were performed on Bane's back. As you can see in the images below that scar could've been much nastier than the final product that you can see in the image above. Tim Burton'S Dark Shadows Chloe Mortez's Werewolf, Eva Green's Angelique, Bird Witch, Vampire Victim The Dark Knight Rises is now playing at your local theater. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.
