Cazzie David Is Glad Her Feature Directing Debut Won’t ‘Resonate’ with Most People: That’s the Point
Cazzie David may have grown up in the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to give audiences what they want.
The “Umbrella Academy” actress, author of essay collection “No One Asked For This,” and daughter of Larry David opted to make her feature debut with SXSW-selected anti-rom-com “I Love You Forever.” David co-wrote and co-directed the subversive dramedy with “Eighty-Sixed” web series collaborator Elisa Kalani. Oh, and did we mention David also has a supporting role in the film?
“I Love You Forever” stars “Single Drunk Female” breakout Sofia Black-d’Elia as law student Mackenzie, whose lackluster love life is resurrected after a meet-cute with charming broadcast journalist Finn (Ray Nicholson). Yet Finn’s charisma and well-timed vulnerable admissions point to a more sinister game at play, and Mackenzie soon finds herself in a year-long toxic relationship solely framed by Finn’s narcissistic abuse.

“I Love You Forever” has all the trappings of a romantic comedy, for better or worse. In the whipsmart millennial-skewing film where you’re old if you’ve been caught using a third-generation iPhone, there’s something charmingly antiquated about the scene filmmakers Cazzie David and Elisa Kalani set around Mackenzie (Sofia Black D’Elia), a law student who has a pair of bickering best friends (Jon Rudnitsky and Cazzie David) to constantly amuse her and a personal life punctuated by Jessica Simpson and Michelle Branch needle drops. Such retro touches aside, their subversive spin on the genre doesn’t seem as if it could’ve been made any earlier than 2024, amid talk that emotional manipulation in a relationship can be every bit as pernicious as physical abuse, as Mackenzie experiences when she falls for the wrong guy.
For previous generations, the wrong guy was more likely to resemble Mark Wahlberg in “Fear,...

There comes a time in every heterosexual woman or queer man’s life where we have to wonder: What is it about men that is at once so despicable and so alluring?
There are statistically more male serial killers, more male sociopaths, and — let’s be real — more male assholes than there are female counterparts. That’s just scientific fact. Sure, you can click on the hyperlinks, but do you really need to read a Psychology Today post between looking at this review and scrolling through the dating apps?
But the foundation of heteronormative rom-coms goes as follows: Girl meets boy, girl falls for boy, girl changes herself slightly for boy, and boy proposes. The end, happily ever after, everyone is great and good. Yeah, if you’re currently dating (or have been on dates at all in the 21st century), you know that’s not how it works, especially when situationships,...

The LA Lakers game on April 28 brought out lots of stars, including actor Jack Nicholson. Jack didn't attend the crucial game alone: "The Shining" star was joined by his son Ray Nicholson and his grandson Duke Nicholson. He also proved popular with the other fans in attendance. Patricia Arquette is having a “Severance” reunion with a noir twist — in a show you probably haven’t heard of.
The Emmy winner collaborates again with “Severance” and “Escape at Dannemora” director Ben Stiller for Apple TV+ dark comedy “High Desert.” Arquette plays Peggy, an on-again-off-again addict who decides to make a new start after the death of her beloved mother, with whom she lived in the small desert town of Yucca Valley, California, and makes a life-changing decision to become a private investigator.
Matt Dillon, Christine Taylor, Brad Garrett, Weruche Opia, Bernadette Peters, Rupert Friend, and Keir O’Donnell also star in the series. “High Desert” is created and written by Nancy Fichman (“Grace and Frankie”), Katie Ford (“Miss Congeniality”), and Jennifer Hoppe (“Nurse Jackie”), who all also serve as executive producers. Both Stiller and Arquette serve as executive producers.
Jay Roach (“Meet the Parents”) directs all eight episodes of the half-hour series.

Samara Weaving has been a scream queen, an action star, and now, the embodiment of multiple real-life feminist icons.
First up, the “Ready or Not” breakout star portrays French aristocrat Marie-Joséphine de Montalembert in this week’s new release “Chevalier” opposite Kelvin Harrison Jr. After that, Weaving will transform into former Playboy bunny Holly Madison for limited series “Down the Rabbit Hole,” and will then travel back in time once more to play Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte in “Liz.”
“Maybe I’m a masochist. You read a really good script or a really good pitch and you can’t say no to it,” Weaving told IndieWire of her period piece nods to real people. “Elizabeth Bonaparte, I’m a huge fan of [director] Adam Leon’s work. ‘Italian Studies’ is one of my favorite movies, so just working with him is going to be awesome. Producer of “Something From Tiffany’s” Lauren Neustadter credits costars Kendrick Sampson (“Insecure”) and Zoey Deutch, as well as casting director Ronna Kress, with transforming the story of the film, adapted from Melissa Hill’s book that came out over a decade ago.
“I read it when it was in galley [advanced, not finished format] and it’s a delightful book with an A+ movie premise. I immediately gravitated towards the premise of the book,” Neustadter told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I thought the characters were incredibly charming, but it wasn’t the kind of thing where there was a lot of specificity around the roles and the backgrounds of each of the characters. It was written in a bit of a different moment in time, and so we were imagining the script now, and we were imagining making the movie now. It was just something that I think we wanted to make sure that we were incredibly inclusive.

There’s nothing like New York City during Christmas: the packed streets of Soho and Midtown, the tourist-dense holiday market in Bryant Park, the unexpected bursts of snow.
There’s magic in the air, no doubt, but chaos too, as is evident in “Something From Tiffany’s,” a new streaming Christmas romantic comedy, a genre already rich in entries. A mix-up between two boyfriends at the iconic jewelry store Tiffany leads to a mix-up for the ages: one woman’s engagement ring winds up on the wrong hand.
At the helm of “Something From Tiffany’s” is ingenue du jour Zoey Deutch (“Not Okay”) as Rachel, a strong-willed, career-oriented baker who tolerates her longtime tattoo artist boyfriend Gary. He’s often disappointing her — showing up late or missing an obligation — forcing him to make up for his own incompetence with gifts and gestures of affection.

Kendrick Sampson Says "Something From Tiffany's" Brings "[Rom-Com] Feels" Minus "Patriarchal Tropes"
Imagine this: it's the holiday season, and you've decided it's time to propose to your significant other. You go to a jewelry store to pick out the perfect ring. But then, as you're walking out with it, something unimaginable happens, and your ring accidentally ends up in the hands of someone else without you even realizing it. Horrible, right? Well, that's exactly what goes down in Kendrick Sampson's new movie, "Something From Tiffany's."
Based on Melissa Hill's 2011 novel of the same name, the rom-com follows Sampson's character, Ethan, just as he's getting ready to propose to his girlfriend, Vanessa (Shay Mitchell), on Christmas. However, his plan gets derailed after his gift gets mixed up with Gary's (Ray Nicholson), who isn't exactly ready to propose to his girlfriend, Rachel (Zoey Deutch), just yet. From there, a series of unexpected twists and turns take place that...

Actor Ray Nicholson has been staying extremely busy, with multiple projects on the release horizon, including the buzzy comedic thriller “Borderline,” from writer/director Jimmy Warden, which is being shopped at AFM by Radiant Films, in conjunction with CAA. Nicholson stars as a helplessly romantic sociopath that escapes from a mental institution and invades the home of a ‘90s pop superstar, played by Samara Weaving (“Ready or Not”). Nicholson spoke with Variety about the project and his burgeoning career.
What can you say about “Borderline”?
When I read the script, I said to myself — what a cute love story! I loved it immediately, and I was fortunate enough to meet with Jimmy Warden, and we hit it off and nerded-out over movies, and from that point he really trusted me.
What drew you to the material?

"You know what I see? Fear!" Gravitas Ventures has revealed a trailer for Where Are You, a psychological thriller mystery about a photographer. This initially premiered at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival last year, but made no impact and earned no buzz. Now it's being dumped on VOD later this month. A photographer experiencing an artistic decline begins taking his aggressions out on his super attractive artist girlfriend. When she cryptically disappears, he enters his own subconscious, descending down a spiral of mystery and madness on his search for her, as well as himself. The film's ensemble cast features Anthony Hopkins, Camille Rowe, Irakli Kvirikadze, Ray Nicholson, Angela Sarafyan, Mickey Sumner, Melora Walters, Christopher Ashman, Brad Greenquist, and Madeline Brewer. This is a very strange out-of-the-90s trailer that sells it like a "coming to Saturday night TV" movie special. Doesn't seem that exciting. ›››

Samara Weaving has lined up her latest genre project, and hopefully, it'll be less of a bloodbath than 2019's "Ready Or Not." No, actually, I take that back — Samara Weaving kicked butt in that hilarious horror flick, and it would be great to see her gear up for another fight to the death. Weaving is already set to appear in the upcoming sixth "Scream" movie, which will reunite her with "Ready Or Not" directors Tyler Gillett and Mat Bettinelli-Olpin, so why not double down and put her survivalist skills to the test? While her upcoming film isn't quite ticking the horror box, it certainly veers into very familiar territory by telling the story of a woman just barely evading tense circumstances to survive.
Variety reports that Weaving will take center stage in a new comedic thriller, currently in production in Vancouver. Titled "Borderline," the film follows a "helplessly romantic sociopath...

Cohen Media Group hopes a Spanish film can dent the tough market for foreign language fare, Bleecker Street is out with a hostage drama and A24 presents Owen Kline’s directorial debut about a teenage cartoonist as the arthouse market flexes more muscle than it has in weeks.
The dearth of new releases itself nudged some distributors to grab a window now before a more crowded fall, including Uar’s supersized specialty opening of the Idris Elba, Tilda Swinton-starring Three Thousand Years Of Longing on 2,436 screens, considerably wider than originally anticipated.
George Miller’s fantasy fairytale, written by Miller and Augusta Gore, is based on the 1994 A.S. Byatt short story ‘The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye’. Swinton is a complacent academic, Elba is the Djinn (a kind of spirit genie) she encounters at a conference in Istanbul in the 2022 Cannes Film Festival out-of-competition entry.
Early on in Neil Labute’s “Out of the Blue,” a pair of James M. Cain novels get checked out by Diane Kruger’s cool, composed seductress at an elegant old library.
Unfortunately, the writer-director’s bid to evoke the murderous lust of hard-boiled staples “The Postman Always Rings Twice” and “Double Indemnity” is itself plenty checked out, a zipless exercise about as noirish as a commercial for household cleaning products.
Few careers are as mystifying in their longevity as Labute’s, whose empty misanthropy and gotcha dramatics across theater and movies were once the epitome of soured-soul indie cachet. His film career of late — whether directing his own screenplays or for-hire gigs — has been divorced from any meaningful expectations or promise or acclaim, but it’s still trudging along. “Out of the Blue,” which only ever feels tossed off, conjures the same head-scratching about its existence: If an adulterous...

A new cinematic drinking game has arrived. It’s a doozy, too, when taking a shot every time writer-director Neil Labute uses an intertitle demarking time in Out of the Blue means you’ll probably pass out before Connor’s (Ray Nicholson) inevitable plan to kill Marilyn’s (Diane Kruger) abusive husband is floated, let alone put in motion. Many are arbitrary. Some are exacting. Few have narrative relevance beyond telling us something we already know. I’m thus unsure what the point of using so many is, beyond earning an incredulous laugh—some bookend thirty seconds of footage that provide nothing of consequence anyway. If a character mentions that an event will occur on Tuesday, we don’t need to see “Tuesday” before transitioning to said event. It’s implicit.
My guess is that Labute merely hopes to elicit mood. Film noir plays in the background of many scenes and Marilyn,...

Exclusive: Andrew Dice Clay (Pam & Tommy) and Jordan Johnson-Hinds (The Endgame) will star in the Quiver-acquired basketball drama Warrior Strong from director Shane Belcourt (Red Rover), which has entered production in Northern Ontario, Canada.
The film written by Dan Gordon (Wyatt Earp) centers on basketball protege and egocentric Bilal Irving (Johnson-Hinds), who is asked to be the assistant coach of his former high school team, the Dumont Warriors, alongside Coach Avery Schmidt (Clay). The question is, will this rag-tag team of misfits have what it takes to put aside their differences and become Warrior Strong?
Nicholas Tabarrok and Leah Jaunzems are producing for Darius Films, with Quiver’s Berry Meyerowitz, Jeff Sackman and Larry Greenberg serving as exec producers. Quiver holds worldwide rights to the film and will be introducing it for sale at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.

"Do you have an alibi for last night?" Quiver Distribution has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Out of the Blue, the latest from American filmmaker Neil Labute. There have been so many films named Out of the Blue over the years that it doesn't make any sense to use this same dull title again. The romantic thriller centers on Connor, whose dull life is transformed when he meets the enigmatic beauty Marilyn. His heart of gold is seemingly destined for the trophy wife. The only hitch in their idyllic new life together? Marilyn is trapped in a nightmare with an abusive husband and vulnerable stepdaughter and schemes with Connor to find a way out. Ray Nicholson stars as Connor, featuring Diane Kruger as Marilyn, and a cast featuring Hank Azaria, Victor Slezak, and Chase Sui Wonders. This looks like exactly ...
