Warning: The following contains spoilers for Oculus and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Of all the horror creators currently working in the business, few have the ability to tear at our heartstrings like Mike Flanagan. Beginning with the 2018 hit miniseries The Haunting of Hill House, the director’s horrific Netflix shows are just as likely to elicit cathartic sobs as hysterical screams. However, with a cast of unlikeable characters and a cavalcade of grisly deaths, Flanagan’s newest series The Fall of the House of Usher may signal a return to the grim horror of his early career. Films like Absentia, Hush, and Ouija: Original of Evil all center harsh and unforgiving stories – a gut punch rather than a bittersweet embrace. Perhaps the cruelest of these is Oculus, the 2013 story of a haunted mirror. Ten years after its premiere, this nihilistic movie still feels like a lean...

The Young and the Restless introduced Kyle Abbott in 2001 as the son of Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and Diane Jenkins (Maura West). A slew of toddlers played the character for the first three years, but then he vanished from Genoa City for a while. In 2010, Kyle Abbott returned and was initially portrayed by Garrett Ryan. He held the role for two years before the character was recast to Blake Hood. After that, Hartley Sawyer snagged the role in 2013. Lachlan Buchanan made a splash with his version of Kyle Abbott from 2015 to 2016. After he left Genoa […]

Mirrors have always given me the creeps. Your refection showing the toll of time and aging, those tried and true horror tropes of your reflection not being tethered to what you do on the other side of the glass, or the mirror itself being a gateway to another world. So it would be a pretty easy sell to make a movie about an evil mirror. It’s even been done a few times before. I just watched another pretty clever mirror entry with David Warner. The reflection is coming from inside the mirror! Chicago – Films in general are knocked for being knockoffs of something else. Horror films in particular have it especially hard in the “new” department because we’re so quickly annoyed when we’ve “seen it all before”.
There are only so many ways to alter how you draw a circle. At the end of the day, you’ve still drawn a circle and the only difference is how you got there.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
“Oculus” starts with promise because Jason Blum is attached to it. Blum’s production company, Blumhouse Productions, is responsible for so many Hollywood horror films as of late that it’s impossible for your concept of horror in the past decade not to be impacted by him.
Just to name a few, we’re talking about “Paranormal Activity” (2007), “Paranormal Activity 2” (2010),” “Paranormal Activity 3” (2011), “Sinister” (2012), “Paranormal Activity 4” (2012), “The Purge” (2013)”, “Insidious: Chapter 2” (2013), “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones...

Oculus stars Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as grown siblings seeking revenge on a cursed mirror that destroyed their lives and countless others before theirs.
Directed by Mike Flanagan, Oculus intertwines the narratives of your Kaylie (Annalise Basso) and Tim (Garrett Ryan) with that of them 10 years later (Gillan and Thwaites). In the interveening time, Kaylie has been obsessing over the night they lost both parents (Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane), while Tim has been locked down in a treatment facility until he no longer believes a mirror made him kill his father. Oculus is a horror genre film that focuses far more on the psyche than the violence of the supernatural.
Critics Review 'Oculus'
In reviewing Oculus, critics largely found Flanagan’s bravely near-bloodless film refreshing. Some even suggested that the film was not only good compared to other horror films, but generally interesting as a piece of cinema.

Oculus
Directed by: Mike Flanagan
Cast: Brenton Thwaites, Karen Gillan, Katee Sackhoff, Rory Cochrane, Annalise Basso, Garrett Ryan
Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: April 11, 2014
Plot: Two siblings (Gillan and Thwaites) try to prove that a demonic mirror is to blame for a traumatic event that destroyed their family.
Who’S It For? Those who enjoy Blumhouse Horror films such as Insidious, but more for the ideas in place than the actual scares.
Overall
The harbinger of doom in Oculus is an old-ass mirror, an ironically useless antique that efficiently aligns its housing film with the Hooters ethos of “delightfully tacky, yet refined.” A filthy slab of glass placed within a frame by a 1700s goth trying too hard, there is a playful wink in its mistaken value as schmancy interior design. True to the film’s awareness as a B-movie attempting A-grade horror, Oculus is hip as...

Oculus takes part in both the present and the past, showing us Tim and Kaylie as children and adults in their struggle against the Lasser Glass. For the latest in our Q&A series, we spoke with Garrett Ryan, who plays the younger version of Tim in this movie, and he told us about playing this character and his experience on set:
Garrett, thank you for taking the time to talk with us about your new movie, Oculus. For starters, could you tell us what it was like acting on a horror movie set? Were there any particular scary moments during filming that you experienced?
Garrett Ryan: Thank you for having me. The sets of horror films are very fun to be on. But surprisingly, it’s never scary to film a horror movie and you can never really tell how terrifying the final product will be. But when...

Film: "Oculus"; Cast: Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Katee Sackhoff, Rory Cochrane, Annalise Basso, Garrett Ryan, James Lafferty, Miguel Sandoval and Kate Siegel; Director: Mike Flanagan; Rating: ***
Like its literal meaning, "Oculus" is an 'eye-opener'. It is an intriguing and a deceptive film, fitting more into the psychological thriller than the horror genre that it is touted to be.
While there are flashes of horror tropes that include a new home, a nuclear family, paranormal activities and a menacing force that induces violence, "Oculus" is a spine-chiller that psyches your mind with reflections of the past shrouding the present.
Oscillating between events that took place 11 years ago and the present, it is.

Besides making lots and lots of money, "The Conjuring" solidified the fact that, even in whatever you're supposed to call this decade, you can still make a scary movie that doesn't rely exclusively on buckets of blood and extreme sexual violence. Instead, you could tell a classy, subtle, emotionally engaging tale of everyday people faced with an otherworldly presence... And that people would actually show up.
The same line of thinking is involved with this weekend's "Oculus," which we first saw back at SXSW --it's the tale of a pair of adult siblings (Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites) who confront the haunted mirror that was responsible for a seismic family tragedy many years earlier. Yes, that sounds like a very silly horror movie. But sometimes, in the words of George Michael, you've got to have faith.
But does "Oculus" actually bring it? Or does it leave you screaming... for more?...

A cleverly executed mind game that generates scares via structural ingenuity, Oculus suggests a world coming terrifyingly unmoored from its bearings.
Set in two separate time periods, director Mike Flanagan's debut boasts sumptuously sweeping, rotating camerawork and a knotty script. It concerns the attempt by Kaylie and younger brother Tim (Karen Gillan and Brenton Thwaites as adults; Annalise Basso and Garrett Ryan as kids) to return to their old home and destroy an ancient mirror that, Kaylie claims, houses a supernatural spirit who was responsible for the deaths of their parents (Rory Cochrane and Katee Sackhoff) 11 years earlier.

Former Doctor Who stars Karen Gillan and Matt Smith reunited at the premiere for Oculus in Los Angeles last night (April 3).
The 31-year-old actor was supporting Gillan, who starred as companion Amy Pond between 2010 and 2012 in the BBC cult sci-fi series, at the screening of her new Mike Flanagan-directed horror movie.
The 26-year-old actress looked stylish in a black and pink mesh dress with sequin details and striped sleeves, while Smith looked dapper in a black suit.
The pair, who hugged and joked with one another on the red carpet, were also sporting longer hair after both were required to shave their locks off for separate film roles.
Gillan cut off all of her hair for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, while Smith shaved for his part in Ryan Gosling's upcoming directorial debut How to Catch a Monster.

Amidst all the Doctor Who lovers preventing Karen Gillan from entering the Stateside theater at this year’s South by Southwest festival, I’m the nerd who gets star-struck when producer Jason Blum walks in. What! I’m a business major, film critic, and a lover of horror – of course my hands are going to clam up when the dude behind Blumhouse Productions walks in to present his latest film Oculus. The truth is though, Jason wasn’t as involved as usual here, so I need to give credit where credit is due – to Intrepid Pictures producer Trevor Macy and director Mike Flanagan. Adapting his own short film, Flanagan attacks show-burn horror through a mystical mirror with horrifying powers, building tension and executing a killer third act filled with ghouls, visual trickery, and a few scares that’ll leave horror lovers with an elevated heart rate.

Maybe he’s a totally new face for you, maybe not, but – don’t worry, you’ll soon have a chance to watch young Australian actor Brenton Thwaites in a movie titled Oculus. Even better, he’s set to star as the lead in this horror pic which comes from director Mike Flanagan. Nice start for that cute face of yours, Thwaites!
At this moment we know that Oculus will center on two young children who became orphans ten years ago after a horrifying family incident. Although authorities charged the boy with the murder, his sister believes that the true culprit was a powerful antique mirror.
Rory Cochrane is also on board to star in the whole thing, as well as Karen Gillan, who is set to play the female lead.
The rest of the cast will apparently also include Katee Sackhoff, Annalise Basso, Garrett Ryan, James Lafferty and Miguel Sandoval.
