“Papa Fujii’s Unexpected Journey,” a film project about a Japanese man’s attempt to understand his dead daughter’s life in Taiwan was named as the grand prize winner at the 2012 edition of the Golden Horse Film Project Promotion event. It wins a Nt$1 million prize.
Prizes were announced on Wednesday evening at a ceremony as part of the ongoing Golden Horse Film Festival. The Golden Horse Film Awards, often regarded as the most important for Chinese-language cinema, will be announced on Saturday (Nov. 27).
“Unexpected Journey” is to be directed by Hou Chi-jan, a writer-director and cinematographer best known for his 2012 film “When a Wolf Falls in Love With a Sheep.” The jury judging the project market praised the project’s “humanistic warmth and portrayal of intergenerational reconciliation,” and said that it is “not only poetic but also possesses commercial potential.”

One Day is continuing my lucky streak of picking quality Taiwanese films (Honey PuPu, Blowfish, Starry, Starry Night and Make Up), making me wonder why so many people are still ignoring (or missing) the obvious (artistic) growth of the Taiwanese cinema industry these past couple of years. One Day is everything a good romantic film should be, with some spicy fantastical overtones thrown in for good measure.If you've been paying attention to my reviews the name Chi-jan Hou's might ring a little bell. Chi-jan Hou was responsible for the Juliet's Choice segment in Juliets, which I must admit did raise expectations considerably. Though I still prefer his short segment in Juliets Hou definitely delivers with One Day, marking him as one of the current talents...

Hou Chi-Jan's One Day has to be one of the most beautifully deceptive movies of the past few years. While it starts out like the archetypal slow, elliptic Taiwanese coming-of-age narrative, it slips into something far stranger, moving, unsettling, even a little frightening. It plays out as if it were a Haruki Murakami short story penned after the author had sat through Inception several times back to back, and while it doesn't quite live up to all its aspirations it easily ranks as one of the biggest surprises of 2010.
It's difficult to decide what to explain and what not, in the hope of leaving the plot unspoilt, yet laid out as simply as possible the story begins thus; Singing (Nikki Hsin-Ying Hsieh) and Tsung (Bryan Shu-Hao Chang) are two young people on the ferry service bound for the Kinmen archipelago off the coast of mainland China.

Berlin -- Asian cinema will bookend the 60th Berlin International Film Festival, with Chinese drama "Apart Together" from Golden Bear winner Wang Quan'an ("Tuya's Marriage") opening the event with its world premiere Feb. 11 and "About Her Brother," the latest from Japanese director, and Berlinale regular Yoji Yamada ("The Twilight Samurai") closing the festival Feb. 20.
"Apart Together" focuses on the reunion of two lovers who were separated when one, a solider, fled from Shanghai to Taiwan in 1949 to escape Mao Tse-tung's troops. The film stars Lu Yan, Ling Feng, Xu Cai Gen and Mo Xiaoqi. The film will screen in competition, giving Wang Quan'an a chance for a second Golden Bear. "Apart Together" will also screen separately in Berlin's Culinary Cinema section on Feb. 17.
