Comics are not movies: obviously. The two forms do have some things in common, and can use similar visual language — they’re both storytelling mediums with limited space for dialogue and various ingenious ways to show time passing, among other parallels.
But, even at best, they’re parallel: they can do similar things in different ways. So when a creator continuously evokes cinema in his comics, as matter and style, the reader starts to wonder what is up.
By 2010’s Love and Rockets: New Stories, No. 3 , Gilbert Hernandez had been telling movie-inspired stories for about a decade. His major character Fritzi had become a B-movie star, in at least a minor way, and he’d not only told stories about her life and work, but he’d “released” several of her “movies” as separate graphic novels: Chance in Hell (2007), Speak of the Devil (2008), The Troublemakers (2009). And, in the previous year’s No.

Last week, I looked at what Jaime Hernandez did right after the ending of the first Love and Rockets comics series in 1996. At the time, that could have been anything: completely different comics work, gallery paintings, film work, becoming a hermit in darkest Upper Slower Slobbovia. But, as it turned out, Jaime continued the same story sequence in basically the same tone and style in a series of related comics series.
And his brother Gilbert did the same thing: Luba and Her Family collects comics from mostly 1995 through 2001 (with one 2011 story up front just to confuse bibliographers of the future) that originally appeared in floppy form in Luba and Luba’s Comics and Stories and Measles and New Love. It follows most obviously from the latter clump of stories in Human Diastrophism and from the two graphic novels in Beyond Palomar; the focus is on Luba and her sisters Fritzi and Petra,...

Dark Horse Originals is proud to announce two new amazing series from critically acclaimed creators Matt Kindt and Gilbert Hernandez!
Matt Kindt, the most original voice in genre comics, outdoes himself in his bold new espionage series, Mind Mgmt. Reporting on a commercial flight where everyone aboard lost their memories, a young journalist stumbles onto a much bigger story, the top-secret Mind Management program. Her ensuing journey involves weaponized psychics, hypnotic advertising, talking dolphins, and seemingly immortal pursuers, as she attempts to find the flight’s missing passenger, the man who was Mind Management’s greatest success—and its most devastating failure. But in a world where people can rewrite reality itself, can she trust anything she sees? If you think you know what Matt Kindt can deliver, you haven’t seen anything yet!

Dark Horse Comics has announced new series from Matt Kindt and Gilbert Hernandez. Kindt is working on a new series called Mind Mgmt, while Hernandez is creating a zombie title called Fatima: The Blood Spinners. "Reporting on a commercial flight where everyone aboard lost their memories, a young journalist stumbles onto a much bigger story, the top-secret Mind Management program," said the publisher of Mind Mgmt. "Her ensuing journey involves weaponised psychics, hypnotic advertising, talking dolphins, and seemingly immortal pursuers as she attempts to find the flight's missing passenger, the man who was Mind Management's greatest success - and its most devastating failure. The end of the year is fast approaching, which means Certain People (I name no names) realize that they need to use up their vacation days or lose them.
Changing subjects entirely, today I took off from work, and most of what I did was bop into the city to do some book-shopping. (I had a vague idea of doing Xmas shopping as well, and even walked quickly through part of that agglomeration of festive selling huts in Union Square, but that portion of the day’s festivities was not successful.)
First I hit Forbidden Planet — pretty much as an aperitif — which I hadn’t been in for several years. (My mental map of Fp is from the days when they had back issues in the basement — yes, that long ago.) I got issues of two comics for the boys, and also two extremely different graphic novels:

"Working with Gilbert is a dream come true," said Devlin. In October 2006-2010, five annual Wonder Woman Day events raised over $110,000 for Domestic Violence programs in Portland, Oregon and Flemington, NJ. The five-year combination of auctions of over 1,100 original art pieces, plus collectibles, autograph signings, and photo opportunities garnered spectacular turnouts and four Portland Mayoral Proclamations.
This year, the event will take on a new name and an expanded mission! On October 30, 2011, the new Women of Wonder Day — again as a part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month — will take place, returning to Excalibur Books in Portland, Oregon, and Comic Fusion in Flemington, New Jersey, as well as at Heroes and Fantasies in San Antonio, Texas.
This year’s contributions for auction include not only artwork featuring heroines from the world of comics — Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, Storm, Michonne from The Walking Dead, Leetah from ElfQuest — but also from the world of media as well, including Lisbeth Salander, Buffy the Vampire Slayer,...

I have not read as many books as I wanted to this year, nor have I written about as many of the ones I did manage to read. (I didn’t manage to save as much from the flood as I would have liked, either; it’s a low-batting-average kind of year.) But the year is not over, and I can catch up on one of those fronts very quickly, viz:
I’ve devoted several thousand words over the past few years to the “Best American Comics” series — see my posts on the 2006 and 2007 and 2008 and 2009 editions — so perhaps I’ll be forgiven for not diving as deeply into the Neil Gaiman-edited 2010 edition. (Particularly since the 2011 book is out now, all shiny and new, so this is terribly old news.) Each editor shifts the material somewhat — Gaiman’s volume leads off with a long excerpt from the Jonathan Lethem...

In sad, but not entirely unexpected news, Harvey Pekar, best known for his long-running American Splendor underground/indie comic book series, passed away early this morning at his home in Ohio. Pekar had been suffering from multiple illnesses, including prostrate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure, and depression. He was 70.
Pekar began American Splendor in 1976 to document non-superheroic, everyday life, including his own, in his native hometown, Cleveland, Ohio, often with a caustic, acerbic, self-deprecatory wit. Pekar's work attracted some of the most-respected and well-known names in underground and mainstream comics, including Robert Crumb, Alison Bechdel, Chester Brown, Greg Budgett, David Collier, Dean Haspiel (The Quitter), Josh Neufeld, Joe Sacco, Eddie Campbell, Gilbert Hernandez, and Ty Templeton. American Splendor's last issue appeared in 2008.
Outside of underground comics, Pekar was best known for a recurring stint on the David Letterman show in the late 1980s. NBC eventually banned Pekar from appearing...

Gilbert Hernandez' "High Soft Lisp" hits shelves later this month from Fantagraphics Books, and our sister blog MTV Tr3s caught up with the celebrated "Love and Rockets" co-creator to get some info on the book and its origins. Here's an excerpt from the interview:
MTV Tr3s: When are we going to see a Love and Rockets story on the big screen? What about an animated series?
Hernandez: That's something I'd like to see, but I haven't met anyone who is capable of translating my characters to film. There is interest in a Palomar film, but I can't discuss anything about it yet.
MTV Tr3s: Fritz is pretty atypical (in relation to mainstream portrayal of Latinas/Chicanas). She’s bisexual, into punk music and sci-fi. Was she inspired by a specific woman in your life?
Hernandez: Not really. She's in part a combination of situations I've seen women in,...

Whoops. Last week I forgot to write an introduction so I ended up leaving in something I wrote for the first column.
Now here’s a totally interesting peek at what goes on behind the scenes:
If you pay close attention to Wednesday’s blurb, you’ll notice it was written through gritted teeth, as I wrote this whole thing about Nation X #1 thinking it was that upcoming Ultimate X-Men book. Turned out it was just some short stories about some X-People dealing with the fact that they live on an island off the coast of San Francisco. Maybe what I wrote will surface when Ultimate X comes out next year provided that site founder Monkey T. Tossford doesn’t fire me before then. In which case I’ll spite them by landing a gig at Cbr.
Erm, just kidding, guys.

Will Eisner has a towering place in the modern comics field – the premier awards in the field are named after him, and for good reason – due both to his pioneering Spirit newspaper insert from the ‘40s and ‘50s and to the graphic novels he started creating in the late ‘70s, after a long hiatus from the field. And that puts him in an enviable position, in that huge swaths of his work is in print much of the time. But perhaps that isn’t all that enviable, since it means that some, well, lesser work gets reprinted as well.
The three books below were brought back into print this year by W.W. Norton as part of their large and growing Will Eisner Library; they’re packaged handsomely and would fit well on the shelf along with other books in that series. But these three titles also show some of...
