Do you remember The Raid? If you’ve seen it you probably won’t ever forget it. Now imagine taking the brutality and physical violence of that film and transpose it to one apartment and only a handful of people. That’s Why Don’t You Just Die! in a nutshell.
The film tells the story of Matvei, who ends up at the door of corrupt detective Andrei after his resentful daughter asks Matvei to kill him for her. The reason? She claims that her father has repeatedly raped her since she was a child. Now Matvei does what every longing boyfriend would, he says yes. Only Matvei doesn’t bank on things going south quite so fast. He also didn’t bank on Andrei fighting back,...

The World Cinema Locations series has taken in a host of cities with fascinating cinematic histories. Through essays by critics who know them well, it seeks to explore key aspects of their relationships with film, from notable productions to engagement with the public. Nicola Balkind is launching her volume on Glasgow at this year's Glasgow Film Festival, so we caught up with her to ask how it developed.
Book editor Nicola Balkind.
"I was writing for The Big Picture magazine then," says Nicola of the point at which her work attracted the attention of series editor Gabriel Solomons. Neil Mitchell, who was working on World Film Locations: London, invited her to get involved and she went on to do bits for several books in the series, including Dublin and Los Angeles. Having grown up in Glasgow, she felt the city deserved a volume of its own, and when she pitched the idea to.

In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we look back at the year in radio.
2012 begins with 2DayFM shock jock Kyle Sandilands in a continuing sponsorship shit-storm. Jenny Craig is the first to sponsor the Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show after advertisers withdrew from the program in late 2011 following Sandilands’ vitriolic on-air rant at a News.com.au journalist that included calling her a ‘fat slag’. The public response to the weight loss brand’s decision to advertise sees them cancel their ads 24 hours later.
——————————————————————————————————–
Claire Hooper and Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross start their new partnership on Sydney’s Mix106.5 breakfast show as Jane Hall joins Chrissie Swan on Melbourne’s Mix101.1 breakfast show.
——————————————————————————————————–
The Kyle and Jackie O Show opens the year with a ratings drop from 11.2 per cent to 10.1 per cent. Elsewhere, Adelaide’s Mix 102.3 clings to a market lead ahead of FiveAA.

The CEO of Southern Cross Austereo has revealed that Today Network staff tried to call the hospital it prank called at least five times but decided to air the call anyway after failing to get through.
In an interview with 3Aw’s Neil Mitchell, Rhys Holleran said: “We did attempt to contact those people on multiple occasions. We rang them up to discuss what we had recorded. We tried to contact them no less than five occasions.”
The media company is in deep crisis after a nurse in the UK was found dead, apparently having taken her own life, after having put a prank call through to a hospital ward where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for acute morning sickness.
Hosts Michael Christian and Mel Greig impersonated Prince Charles and The Queen during the call and tricked another nurse into giving out details of the Princess’ condition. The...

The Building
Who needs a building when you can set up in the open air? The closest you'll get to cover might be the odd gazebo brought along by punters.

3Aw has announced Tom Elliott as its replacement for Derryn Hinch, who was fired by the station earlier this week.
Talking on 3Aw’s Mornings with Neil Mitchell, station Gm Shane Healy said: “We want to keep positioning 3Aw to be the best station in Australia. Not just now, but in three, five and ten years’ time.”Healy said the slot would probably expand to a three hour show.
The axing of the controversial Hinch, whose contract will run until the end of the year came as something of a surprise. At the last survey, 3Aw was the market leader in drivetime with 12.6% share.
Elliott, who has filled in for Hinch in the past, is scheduled to take over in the new year.

In movie land, an amusement park is often anything but. In the hands of moviemakers, these modern day Rabelaisian playgrounds – spaces that, outside the norm of everyday life, offer the promise of thrills and hedonistic abandonment – have become sites of genuine terror, life threatening danger and unholy activity. Sometimes, the death-defying rides are the least of your worries …
