It’s only been out for less than a week, but Final Fantasy 16 is proving to be one of the most divisive games of 2023. Interestingly, many of the arguments people are currently having about the game are the same arguments people were having before Final Fantasy 16 was even released. Some gamers love the ways that Final Fantasy 16 changes the franchise’s “formula” and some do not.
To be fair, this argument is a little more complicated than that. As indicated above, the debate over the Final Fantasy formula is inherently strange simply because very few mainline Final Fantasy games (especially those released in the last 20 years) follow any kind of formula. While there are a few characters, entities, concepts, and reference points that unite all Final Fantasy titles, many of them have historically endeavored to be their own thing.

Final Fantasy is widely regarded as the grandfather of modern turn-based RPG design philosophies (though its actual influence is slightly more complicated). However, the franchise has strayed further and further from these roots ever since Final Fantasy X. That’s not to say more recent entries are bad, but rather that they clearly going in a different direction. However, the latest mainline Final Fantasy title, the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI, is really testing the limits of the series’ more traditional elements.
On June 12, Square Enix released a special demo for Final Fantasy XVI. The small sampling runs players through the prologue, which should take most gamers two and a half hours to complete. Anyone who completes this section can play through another segment set later in the game that is meant to provide players a taste of the overwhelming power you can eventually wield.

It’s been a long time since I truly loved a Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy Xii, which came out in 2006, was a somewhat forgettable distraction that mostly left me longing for another Vagrant Story. Unfairly maligned Final Fantasy Xiii (2009) had a little je ne sais quoi but didn’t fully hit the mark. My aversion to Tetsuya Nomura’s nonsensical storytelling in Kingdom Hearts pushed me to skip Final Fantasy Xv entirely. Even the 1990s nostalgia-baiting Final Fantasy VII Remake dared to amaze, right up until it didn’t.
