A year and a half ago, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. Now we know when we’re going to have a chance to see this movie, as Variety has confirmed that veteran producer Bob Yari’s new company Magenta Light Studios has secured the U.S. distribution rights to the film and they’re planning to give it a wide theatrical release on August 23rd.
Plot details on this thriller are being kept under wraps, and Variety notes that reviews from audience members who saw the movie at Fantastic Fest last year ” hint that the film works best with as little information as possible going in.” Apparently it has something...

We want movies to move us. We want them to soothe us, and carry us through bad times; we want them to make us laugh, make us feel connected to others, and show us beauty and splendor we've never seen before. And, sometimes, we want movies to truly, deeply disturb us.
Never mind why; maybe we're numb and want to be rattled into feeling, maybe we're feeling too much and want to channel it all somewhere, or maybe we just want to believe the world is still capable of bowling us over despite of our defenses. Whatever the case, we all sometimes take to a movie specifically because of one particular moment in it that makes us feel horrible.
Conversely, we sometimes don't want movies to disturb us, and yet they do — when we're least expecting them to, or when we're making an earnest effort to meet them halfway, they...

For years now, writer Simon Barrett has been involved with several of my favorite modern horrors, including You’re Next, the criminally underappreciated Blair Witch (2016), and A Horrible Way to Die, as well as The Guest. But now, Barrett is branching out creatively, directing his first feature Seance, which follows a group of young women at an elite prep school who are being murdered by a mysterious entity after a prank amongst several of the students goes horribly wrong.
During the recent press day for Seance, I had the opportunity to speak with Barrett about his directorial debut, and we also dug into some of our own geeky tendencies as horror fans throughout our conversation. Barrett also discussed the inspirations behind the story of Seance, the importance of being good to your characters when you’re writing and/or directing, working with his incredible cast, and more.

Many things can be true at the same time, a concept that first-time feature director and long-time horror scribe Simon Barrett tries to tap into with his debut “Seance.” It hints at the possibility of two ghosts within its first five minutes and the twinned ghost stories soon expand to involve all manner of other horror-centric tropes: a creepy boarding school, a mysterious new girl, a shy new friend with (maybe) a secret, even a handsome outsider who loves to lurk — along with the usual assortment of flickering lights, bloody visions, and a basement filled with archival material that might hold some answers. Yes, many things can be true at once, but “Seance” might benefit from being pared to a more streamlined story.
Barrett’s film hints at the sleeker, darker film underneath his many genre fixations; it also sets up the possibility of a followup that could better tap into those ideas.

"If someone dies in a bad way, the energy imprints on the surroundings. If you're sensitive, you can pick up on it..." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for an indie horror film called Seance, marking the feature directorial debut of writer Simon Barrett. Camille is the new girl at the prestigious Edelvine Academy for Girls. Soon after her arrival, six girls invite her to join them in a late-night ritual, calling forth the spirit of a dead former student who haunts their halls. But before morning, one of them is dead. This seems like a much darker, supernatural twist on The Craft, or maybe it's something else. Starring Suki Waterhouse, Madisen Beaty, Ella-Rae Smith, Inanna Sarkis, Seamus Patterson, and Marina Stephenson-Kerr. Hmmm. I was expecting this to look better than it does, it's not so scary. Well. That was fast. It was only the other week that scribe Simon Barrett had informally announced on his socials that production had wrapped one what we assume was his first shot at directing a feature film, Seance. He's been up in our neck of the woods for a while working on it. Fast because today comes the announcement that the North American rights for Seance have been picked up by Rlje Films. Shudder, another part of AMC Networks, have picked up the streaming rights for the same territory as well as UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. As we said off the hop Seance is Barrett's feature directorial debut and stars Suki Waterhouse, Madisen Beaty, Ella-Rae Smith, Seamus Patterson and Marina Stephenson-Kerr. In Seance,...

Melodrama has somewhat become a relic of cinema’s past. To be sure, we get melodramatic movies still being released, but true melodrama has largely gone away. The new movie To the Stars seeks to bring melodramas back, and up until the tail end of the third act, it succeeds. Some solid cinematography, a really strong turn from Liana Liberato, and even a small sense of mystery buoys it for a good long while. Then, as it comes in for a landing, the wheels fall off and it crashes in a big way. It’s a shame, too, as it prevents the flick from earning a recommendation that it had in the bag, moments before. The film is a drama, set in 1960’s Oklahoma, and specifically a very small town. It’s the sort of town where everyone is under scrutiny, the folks consider themselves god fearing, and judgment comes quick.

Quentin Tarantino movies are defined as much by their sound design as they are by the director’s trademark writing, and over the filmmaker’s last three movies a big part of the Tarantino sound has been crafted by supervising foley artist Gary A. Hecker. For “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” it fell on Hecker to figure out how to create the head-smashing, dog-biting, and flame-throwing murders that make up the movie’s climax. The scene in question finds Manson cult members Susan Atkins (Mikey Madison), Tex Watson (Austin Butler), and Patricia Krenwinkel (Madisen Beaty) breaking into the home of Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) in order to kill him. The “Manson murders” are upended when the killers run into Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who along with his dog dispose of the cult members in brutally horrific ways.

[Editor’s note: Boots Riley’s exclusive follow-up statement to IndieWire has been added to the bottom of the post]
“Sorry to Bother You” writer-director Boots Riley returned to Twitter after a nearly three-month hiatus to share a criticism he has with Quentin Tarantino’s depiction of the Manson Family cult members in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Actors such as Dakota Fanning, Austin Butler, Maya Hawke, and Lena Dunham star in the film as Manson followers, many of which are based on real people. Riley took issue with Tarantino’s script for depicting the cult members as hippies with liberal beliefs and not at all dealing with their racism and right-wing views.
“The Manson Family were overt white supremacists who tried to start a race war with the goal of killing black folks,” Riley wrote to his followers. “They weren’t ‘hippies’ spouting left critiques of media. They were rightwingers. This fact flips Tarantino’s allegory on its head.

Life can change online in an instant. That’s especially true for today’s teenagers, especially when it involves visual proof.
Such is the case in Pippa Bianco’s upcoming HBO film “Share,” which follows Mandy (Rhianne Barreto) as she tries to parse what happened before, during, and after a video that’s circulating among people at her high school. As she starts to find out more information about how she ended up unconscious and assaulted, that search for the truth permeates her school and family life.
Poorna Jagannathan and J.C. MacKenzie co-star as Mandy’s parents, alongside Charlie Plummer, Nicholas Galitzine, Lovie Simone and Danny Mastrogiorgio. “Share” is Bianco’s feature debut — her next directorial effort will be on a future episode of the HBO series “Euphoria,” which also addresses the many dangers and anxieties facing high schoolers.

Don Burnside (Dylan McDermott) is a pillar of his community. He’s the troop leader of his son’s (Charlie Plummer’s Tyler) church-adjacent Boy Scouts, a devout man of the Lord alongside his wife Cindy (Samantha Mathis), and the type of guy to go out of his way to volunteer and make the neighborhood a better place. So we laugh when the town’s resident eccentric teen (Madisen Beaty’s Kassi), carrying a mark of “whore” around simply because she’s an atheist among cultish worshippers needing a reason to denounce the “other,” asks Tyler if he thinks his father is the serial murderer known as The Clovehitch Killer. She laughs too. That guy? The doofy dad-of-the-year who cracks lame jokes and can barely keep a straight face when reprimanding misbehaving children? No.

A trailer has been released for a new serial killer thriller called The Clovehitch Killer, which tells the story of a young man who starts to suspect his dad is a serial killer after coming across some unsettling evidence while rummaging through his dad’s shed.
The movie looks like it’s going to be pretty intense as the boys dad starts to suspect his son is on to him. I imagine that this story isn’t going to end well for anyone. The movie stars Charlie Plummer (from Lean on Pete, The Dinner, All the Money in the World) as the boy Tyler and Dylan McDermott as his dad. Here’s the synopsis:
Tyler Burnside (Charlie Plummer) is a Boy Scout, a volunteer at his local church, and the dutiful son of an upstanding, community leader dad (Dylan McDermott). Only one thing troubles the quiet Kentucky town he lives...

IFC Midnight will release the horror thriller The Clovehitch Killer. This film stars Dylan McDermott as a potential serial killer, discovered by his young son. This title had its World Premiere at the La Film Festival, where it was mostly positively reviewed. Now, The Clovehitch Killer is set to show in theatres and on Digital platforms, this November. This suspenseful thriller also stars Charlie Plummer as the son, along with: Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty and Brenna Sherman. The film's first trailer is available here. Dennis Harvey, at Variety, has already reviewed the film. He says of the film's narrative structure: "the movie takes a structural risk, diverging from its hitherto straightforward chronology to backtrack and re-tell part of the story from a different perspective." The Clovehitch Killer does not play out as one might expect. Harvey also mentions that this is nearly a bloodless film and not really for the horror crowd.

"Every man has a secret," and some of them are deadly. Raised in a seemingly loving, albeit confining, family, Tyler's (Charlie Plummer) image of his dad is shattered when he finds something disturbing in his truck... and then the shed. The innocent days of coupon cutting and campouts take a deadly turn in IFC Midnight's official trailer for The Clovehitch Killer, starring Dylan McDermott in a truly chilling role.
Directed by Duncan Skiles from a screenplay he co-wrote with Christopher Ford, The Clovehitch Killer stars Dylan McDermott, Charlie Plummer, Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty, Brenna Sherman, and Lance Chantiles-Wertz. IFC Midnight will release the film in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD platforms on November 16th.

"I don't think he stopped killing..." IFC has released the first official trailer for a serial killer horror thriller titled The Clovehitch Killer, from director Duncan Skiles, which originally premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival this year. This "chilling portrait of all-American evil" is about a picture-perfect family that's shattered when the work of a serial killer hits too close to home. Charlie Plummer stars as Tyler, a Boy Scout who discovers evidence and begins to suspect his own dad, a respectable family man and community leader, of secretly being a serial killer known as the "Clovehitch Killer." The title is a reference to the clove hitch knot, a fairly useful knot taught in Boy Scouts. Also starring Dylan McDermott, Samantha Mathis, Madisen Beaty, Brenna Sherman, and Lance Chantiles-Wertz. This trailer alone sends chills down my spine, it looks like a very creepy thriller. Here's the first official ...

There’s nary a drop of blood, but a squirm factor of 10 to much of “The Clovehitch Killer.” This first theatrical feature for director Duncan Skiles, working from a strong screenplay by his past collaborator Christopher Ford, treads familiar ground in eking suspense from the viewpoint of a child who realizes a parent may have a sinister secret life. But this atypical serial-killer thriller distinguishes itself in resisting thrills — let alone any actual violence — till well past its halfway point, instead maximizing the quiet discomfort in a son’s rising suspicion that his outwardly Dagwood-type dad could be a notorious murderer. IFC Midnight plans simultaneous limited-theatrical and digital-formats release of the La Film Festival-premiered film on Nov. 18.

Director Quentin Tarantino continues to build his cast for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Damon Herriman (Justified) has been cast in the role of Charles Manson in the film and Rafal Zawierucha will play director Roman Polanski, Sharon Tate’s husband. Meanwhile, Danny Strong, Sydney Sweeney, Rumer Willis, Dreama Walker, Margaret Qualley, Costa Ronin, Victoria Pedretti and Madisen Beaty have been cast in the film as well. I can’t believe how massive this cast list is getting. I’m pretty sure that next week we’ll get a notice saying that everyone is in the film.
According to The Wrap, Rumer Willis will play British actress Joanna Pettet; "Walker plays actress and singer Connie Stevens and Ronin (The Americans) portrays Polish actor Voytek Frykowski, who was one of the victims of the Manson Family’s murder spree at Roman Polanski’s home on Cielo Drive." Qualley will take...

As controversy and conjecture lay the ground for a scenario wherein Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood destroys the thinkpiece industry, Film Twitter, and everything in their immediate, terrible vicinity, the writer-director’s been busy transforming Tinseltown for his late-60s drama centered on a TV actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and stuntman buddy’s (Brad Pitt) attempt to enter the studio system, all the while living next door to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski in the summer of 1969. Fittingly for his depiction of an era in which casts overflowed with big names and bit players, the ensemble is immense.
The recent headline-making additions are such: Maya Hawke, daughter of Ethan and Uma Thurman, as a fictional character, Flower Child; Lena Dunham as Manson member Catherine Louise “Gypsy” Share and bringer of skull-grinding discourse; Rumer Willis (another one-generation-removed reunion), Dreama Walker, Margaret Qualley, Costa Ronin, Victoria Pedretti, and Madisen Beaty...

The search for Quentin Tarantino’s Charles Manson is over. The Wrap confirms the director has cast Australian actor Damon Herriman as the infamous serial killer in his ninth feature, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The casting news arrives as Tarantino is already well into production on the 1969-set movie, which is shaping up to be his penultimate effort if he sticks to his plan to retire after ten movies.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a television actor trying to break into the film industry alongside his friends and stuntman, played by Brad Pitt. The characters live next door to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski, played by Margot Robbie and Rafal Zawierucha. Tate and four others were murdered by members of the Manson Family cult on August 9, 1969.
Herriman is best known in the U.S. for playing Dewey Crowe on five seasons of the FX series “Justified.

Earlier today, Quentin Tarantino found his Roman Polanski in Rafal Zawierucha and now, the two-time Academy Award winner has finally filled the role we’ve all been waiting for: Charles Manson. According to Cinema Blend (H/T The Wrap), Damon Herriman, star of Justified and Incorporated, has landed the part of the infamous serial killer in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Currently, the extent of Herriman’s role is unknown, but, seeing as a majority of his work has taken place on the small screen, this will undoubtedly be the most significant production of which he’s ever been apart. Joining Herriman on the non-fiction side of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is Rumer Willis (Joanna Pettet), Dreama Walker (Connie Stevens) and Costa Ronin (Voytek Frykowski). Margaret Qualley (The Nice Guys), Madisen Beaty (The Fosters) and Victoria Pedretti have also come aboard.

New Mexico in the late 19th century, as shown in Jt Mollner’s “Outlaws and Angels,” is a land where zealotry and hypocrisy go hand and hand, where Thomas Hobbes’ “nasty, brutish and short” characterization of human nature guides every interpersonal relationship. While that may not be an inaccurate characterization of what small-town life was like in the American Southwest during the Cleveland administration, “Outlaws and Angels” overestimates its own elegance, delivering a misguided ode to frontier ugliness.
Fittingly, “Outlaws and Angels” opens with a bloodbath, a bank heist gone wrong that leaves a Us Marshall dead. The gang responsible for the crime, armed by ringleader Henry (Chad Michael Murray) and laden with the fruits of their labor, quickly seek refuge from their newly-earned bounty. Starving and with no means of transportation across the Mexican border, the group happens on an unassuming farmhouse, home to the local preacher George Tildon...

Like a heavy Southern drawl that lazily meanders through conversation, Outlaws And Angels drags its scenes far longer than contextually necessary. Imagine a Southerner leaking “Hooowwwwdddyyy folkssssss!” like a deflating balloon instead of clear, concise dictation (“Howdy!” and done). Characters just glare at the screen as director Jt Mollner has a field-day with zoom ins and outs that turn his dried-out, rawhide script into a crackly piece of fragile leather. Overindulgence mars this grim, rough-and-tumble Western splatterfest, which is comparable to a more interesting (but still tiresome) take take on Jane Got A Gun (with a darker, strangely jovial mean streak). Death certainly was a byproduct of the Old West, but could people really be so terse about it all?
