Parents are from Louisiana, but raised him in South Africa, Hawaii, The Gambia, Jamaica, and Jordan.
He and his family were forced to leave The Gambia, while living there, after the military uprising that overthrew the government in 1994.
His brothers and sisters were born in Finland, South Africa, and The Philippines.
While living in apartheid South Africa as a child, he was turned away and not allowed to enroll in a recreational center in Johannesburg due to his complexion. South African reporters ran the story in the South African Gazette prompting an apology from the SA government to his parents. Weeks later he was the first non-white child allowed into the program, and in the weeks that followed, Johannesburg desegregated many of their other recreational centers for children as a result.
Was abandoned on the steps of a hospital as an infant, during the war in Sri Lanka. Was then transferred to an orphanage and later adopted by an American couple from Louisiana who were living in Colombo at the time.
