Cannes Critics’ Week, now in its 63rd year, is always an opportunity to explore uncharted work from new and emerging filmmakers — and away from the glitter and glitz of the Croisette, where the main competition bows. Recent Critics’ Week Grand Prize winners have included everything from “Tiger Stripes,” a Malaysian coming-of-age debut opening in stateside theaters later this month, to 2019’s honoree “I Lost My Body,” the animated favorite that went on to be nominated for an Oscar.
Coming up in the Special Screenings category of Critics’ Week, Alexis Langlois makes their feature directorial debut with “Queens of Drama,” a French pop/punk musical that brings a mid-aughts camp sensibility to Cannes this year. Below, IndieWire shares an exclusive clip for the film along with a first-look image. “Queens of Drama” premieres at Critics’ Week on Saturday, May 18, with Charades handling sales.

Directed by award-winning French-Tunisian actor-turned-screenwriter, Abdellatif Kechiche, Blue is the Warmest Colour won the coveted Palme D’Or (Golden Palm) at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Based on a graphic novel by French illustrator, Jul Maroh, this heart-warming movie was well-received by critics, as well as being a box office smash. But its release also generated some controversy. Why? Because its central theme – lesbian love – unfolds so vigorously. The central character, Emma (Léa Seydoux), an aspiring artist with striking blue hair, enjoys a passionate relationship with Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a quiet, much younger, high school student. It wasn’t the age-gap aspect of their love affair that grabbed the headlines – after all, a disparity in ages between leading actors is as old as moviemaking itself. It had more to do with the explicit girl-on-girl sex scenes. To understand why this excellent film might have ever been thought of as contentious, it...

"We did everything we could, right?" Modern Films in the UK has revealed an official UK trailer for Silent Land, a Polish drama set on an Italian island. This originally premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it has been showing at many fests including Zurich, Chicago, Göteborg, Thessaloniki, and at the New Horizons Film Festival in Poland. A perfect couple rents a holiday home on a sunny Italian island. The reality does not live up to their expectations when they find out the pool is broken. Ignorant of the fact that the island faces a water shortage, they ask to fix it. The presence of a stranger invades the couple's idea of safety and starts a chain of events, which makes them act irrationally, leading them to the darkest place in their relationship. The film stars Dobromir Dymecki, Agnieszka Żulewska, Jean Marc Barr, Alma Jodorowsky, and Marcello Romolo.

Polish filmmaker Aga Woszczyńska – together with co-writer Piotr Litwin – started to work on the script of her first feature film “Silent Land” in 2016, and notes that since then, her film – which centers on the world’s response to migrants – has sadly become even more timely.
Set in Italy, the slow-burning drama sees a couple whose summer holiday goes terribly wrong when Rahim (Ibrahim Keshk), an illegal immigrant hired to fix the pool in the house they paid for, suddenly dies. But Woszczyńska views her film as a humanistic rather than a political statement.
“I don’t want to blame just Italy, but the whole of Europe. The whole world, which stays silent,” she tells Variety.
“When Afghanistan desperately needs our help, we are closing our eyes and our borders – just like [my characters] Adam and Anna. What is currently happening, the whole situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, it’s something worse than barbarism,...

Desperate for respite from their bourgeois lives in Poland, Adam (Dobromir Dymecki) and Anna (Agnieszka Zulewska) decide to vacation on a tiny Italian island. They wanted a big house with a pool and scenic view to get the most alone time possible. While a genial local (Marcello Romolo’s Fabio) promised exactly that, the pool is found empty and in disarray. He offers a discount. They refuse. He offers a free dinner at his trattoria in town. They explain that food won’t fix anything. Only when Adam asks Fabio what the problem is—considering the damage looks like a two-day job at most—does he agree to hire someone to make things right. A jackhammer wakes Anna the next morning.
First-time feature director Agnieszka Woszczynska (who co-wrote with Piotr Litwin) ensures this couple’s entitlement is on full display from the start of Silent Land. Anna packs the fridge with alcohol.

Le Choc Du Futur
Le Choc Du Futur (aka The Shock Of The Future but currently screening in the US under its French title) is the story of Ana (Alma Jodorowsky), a composer working in Paris in 1978, and her first encounter with electronic music. Capturing a moment of cultural flux, it also explores the art of composition and what it means to feel a deep rooted passion for music. Marc Collin has worked as a composer for many years, so when we met to talk about the film, I asked if he had begun by looking for a vehicle for musical ideas, or if what had driven the creation of the film was his desire to direct for the first time.

“I really wanted to direct. It was really my goal for a long time, actually. I started to learn cinema, then I went into music for a long time.

"What I'm going to do with this instrument is something you've never heard!" 606 Distribution has just released the first official UK trailer for a French indie film titled The Shock of the Future, the feature directorial debut of musician Marc Collin. Collin is best known as the founder, with Olivier Libaux, of the project Nouvelle Vague, and has composed music for a few other films, too. Set in Paris in the late 70s, the film is about a woman named Ana who develops the "sound of the future" - some of the very first electronic music. Featuring the songs of Cerrone, Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, "Collin crafts a heartfelt tribute to the forgotten female electronic musical pioneers such a Delia Derbyshire, Laurie Spiegel and Suzanne Ciani told through the eyes of Ana, played with a ferocious charm by newcomer Alma Jodorowsky." WTFilms, the sales company behind Quentin Dupieux’s Jean Dujardin-starrer “Deerskin,” which is opening Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight, has boarded “Escobar by Escobar,” a documentary series about drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.
Pascal Richter will direct the four-part series, which is based on “Pablo Escobar: My Father” by Juan Pablo Escobar, who reflects on his father’s legacy. He became the man to kill when his father died in 1993, and spent his life looking over his shoulder after inheriting $30 billion.
“There have been countless films about Pablo Escobar, but with this documentary series we’re tackling an angle which has rarely been dealt with, shedding light on the aftermath of Escobar’s death and the consequences on the lives of his close ones,” said WTFilms co-founder Dimitri Stephanides.
Victor Robert, a well-seasoned French TV host and journalist, is producing the documentary series through his Paris-based company 10.7 Production and optioned the book.

Victor Robert, a well-seasoned French TV host and journalist, is producing the documentary series through his Paris-based company 10.7 Production and optioned the book.

The Slamdance Film Festival announced today their narrative and documentary feature film competition for its 24th Festival edition, taking place January 19-25, 2018 in Park City. Established in 1995 by a group of filmmakers whose work had been rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance is dedicated to fostering a community for independent emerging artists, fashioning itself “the premiere film festival by filmmakers, for filmmakers.”
The feature competition includes 16 premieres, mostly produced in the U.S. All competition films are feature length directorial debuts with budgets of less than $1 million Usd, and without Us distribution. In addition, the festival announced a new partnership with alumni Anthony and Joe Russo (“Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War”) to establish the inaugural Russo Fellowship award. Every participating filmmaker will be eligible for a $25,000 cash prize and mentorship from the Russos in the development of the winner’s next project at the brothers’ Los Angeles studio.

There are a lot of films that take aim at the youth of a particular moment in time and hope to speak to and for a generation. Most are just so much noise amongst the zeitgeist they pretend to thumb their noses at. The ones that work usually hold up well as films generation after generation, because they are close enough to their own generation and smart enough to realize that they aren’t exatly saying anything new.
Kids in Love, for example, while a stunning portrait of a sub-section of youth-ish today, reminds of nothing more than Metropolitan, a 26-year-old film that it has almost nothing in common with, except an extraordinary understanding of how its characters represent their own societal woes.
This is a film that sets us up with stereotypes and then delivers characters that, like real people, can’t see themselves as a demographic representative, and...

Privileged youth and tedious superficiality rule in this thin drama
This fatuous coming-of-age drama plays out like an advertisement for entitlement. Jack (Will Poulter) has a case of gap-year angst that is not helped when he meets Evelyn (Alma Jodorowsky) and her well-heeled bohemian chums (including Cara Delevingne, underused in a supporting role). A tourist in this world of privilege, Jack is fascinated, until he gets his visa revoked and financial reality bites. It’s staggeringly shallow stuff.

Chris Foggin’s first feature casts a fondly satirical eye on a young and privileged west London crowd
As the kids in question emerge from the trust-funded Gabriels and Violas of West London, some might take this handsome Ya romance as further evidence of creative-industry elitism. Chris Foggin’s first feature nevertheless retains two highly favourable elements. Will Poulter is typically no-nonsense as the Portobello Road set’s own Ben Braddock, drifting from his straight-edge lifepath under the influence of worldly Parisian Evelyn (Alma Jodorowsky).

Kids In Love tells a very specific coming-of-age story. Not a universal one by any stretch, but rather an exploration of what it’s like to be a middle class British young man who’s just reached the end of compulsory education. Options are sprawled in front of Will Poulter’s Jack - an unpaid internship, a gap year, a university course – but none of them particularly interest him.
Enter Alma Jodorowsky as Evelyn, a Frenchwoman living in London who parties at places that Jack can’t even describe. She lives in a big quirky house filled with free-spirited pals, including Cara Delevingne’s Viola (an interesting role for the Suicide Squad alum, with a certain wit and warmth emerging alongside a vast collection of colourful headbands), Evelyn’s loathsome boyfriend Cassius (co-writer Preston Thompson) and the film’s breakthrough comedic force Milo (the other co-writer,...

Ealing Studios has acquired a significant stake in TV and film company GreenAcre Films and forged a new creative partnership with the company that will see Ealing Studios expand its TV division.
Having already announced earlier this year the ITV commission of Maigret for two stand-alone films starring Rowan Atkinson, Ealing Studios’ stake in GreenAcre will see them develop a TV slate for both UK and international broadcasters.
It marks the first partnership at the newly restructured Ealing Studios headed by Ben Latham-Jones.
Co-founded by Nadine Marsh-Edwards and Amanda Jenks in 2010, GreenAcre Films became a division of Wall to Wall in 2012. It will continue to co-produce its current drama slate, which includes projects for HBO, BBC and ITV.
As well as developing new TV projects, GreenAcre will also expand its feature film roster which already has a number of titles in development with the BFI.
In a joint statement, GreenAcre co-founders Nadine Marsh-Edwards and Amanda Jenks said:...

UK cinema in 2015 has plenty to recommend it. Here are 36 UK films of all genres to look forward to this year…
Dig past the litterfall of Kray Brothers biopics and tales of nubile teens on camping trips gone wrong, and you’ll unearth plenty for the UK film industry to boast about in 2015. From sci-fi romps and thrillers like Robot Overlords and Ex Machina to dramas like High-Rise, comedies like War On Everyone, spy flicks like Spectre and kids’ films like Bill, there’s no shortage of inventive, highly promising cinema coming from these isles.
We’ve included a few choice co-productions in 2015’s pick of the year’s most interesting-looking pictures, which bolsters our list in both size and breadth (and mostly means we Brits can claim partial credit for ace-sounding dystopian flick The Lobster).
In alphabetical order then, here are the 36 UK (or UK-ish) movies we’re excited about seeing this year…...

Gossip flew in early August that Cara Delevingne was crossing over from the modeling world into movies with a rumored film project described as "rich kids who live a wild lifestyle filled with parties and drugs."
Which sounded just about right for Delevingne, who comes from a wealthy English family and is quite the partier herself. But now we can stop speculating and start following: The movie, called "Kids In Love" appears to be a go, based on several photos the 21-year-old model posted to Instagram on Thursday tagged #kidsinlove.
CatwalkQueen.tv notes that included in Cara's photos are also Alma Jodorowsky, Gala Gordon, Sebastian de Souza (of "Skins"), Preston Thompson and director Chris Foggin, who also posted a revealing Instagram pic: a shot of the black and white clapperboard bearing the project title "Kids In Love."

He’s steaming up the pages of fashion magazines the world over with his new ad campaign for Christian Dior, and Robert Pattinson's costar in the ordeal is none other than Camille Rowe.

Camille has also appeared in campaigns for companies like Rag & Bone, Coach, The Gap, and H&M, as well as a cover spot for Elle France.

Apparently becoming the new face of Dior includes locking lips with a gorgeous mystery woman ... but mystery no more! A couple weeks after a photo of Robert Pattinson kissing a blonde while filming a new commercial for Christian Dior's men fragrance surfaced online, so did the young woman's identity.
While early speculation indicated the woman was possibly actress Alma Jodorowsky, her rep quickly ruled that out and the model makeout partner has since been revealed as the French beauty Camille Rowe. The model recently graced the cover of Elle France and has also appeared in campaigns for the Australian swimwear brand Seafolly, Gap, Coach and others -- including, of course, Pattinson's steamy multimillion-dollar Dior deal.

Some statuesque models have all the luck. E! News has exclusively confirmed that the woman locking lips with Robert Pattinson in his new commercial for Christian Dior's men's fragrance is Camille Rowe. There had been some debate as to the identity of his makeout partner, with some at first wondering if the lady of the hour was actually Alma Jodorowsky. Her rep quickly ruled her out, however, leaving Rowe as the other likely suspect. The French beauty is currently also the face of Australian swimwear brand Seafolly and has appeared in campaigns for Gap, H&M, Coach, Rag & Bone and more.
