In a move aimed at powering up more content for the massive U.S. Hispanic market and beyond, leading indie production shingle Btf Media has teamed up with L.A.-based American Cinema Inspires (Aci) to develop and produce a slew of Hispanic productions with predominantly U.S. Latino talent.
Leading the vanguard is Sandra Martin’s “Finding Love in San Antonio,” which follows Adela, a successful Latina chef in L.A. (played by Valentina Izarra), who is offered a plum job at a new network series that will send her across Europe. While visiting San Antonio, she meets David (George Akram), a local food writer who wrote a blistering piece about her. Endeavor Content is in talks to reteam with the filmmakers behind the hit “Blue Miracle,” in the wake of its success on Netflix, where it ranked second on its opening weekend, and is reported to have resonated in the U.S. across all ethnic groups.
Starring a relatively unknown Latino cast, the most high-profile actor in it is Dennis Quaid who plays a washed-up and cantankerous boat captain who reluctantly teams up with a guardian, played by Jimmy Gonzales (“Mayans M.C.”), and some of his charges from a cash-strapped orphanage in order to win a lucrative fishing tournament.
“Judging from the online chatter, it was seen in middle America so it not only appealed to Latino families,” said Alexis Garcia, executive VP, Endeavor Content, Advisory, Film Group, who describes it as an inspirational sports movie.

Gina Rodriguez is teaming up with professional boxer Ryan Garcia to develop a sports drama about the athlete’s experiences as a Mexican American lightweight champion.
Rodriguez, best known for The CW’s take on a telenovela “Jane the Virgin,” is directing, co-starring and producing the film. She’s previously helmed episodes of “Jane the Virgin,” but the upcoming, still-untitled movie marks her feature filmmaking debut.
Rodriguez will also co-write the screenplay with actor and playwright Bernardo Cubria (“The Giant Void in My Soul”).
Alongside Rodriguez, the 22-year-old Garcia is starring in the film as a fictional version of himself. Due to Garcia’s fighting schedule, the movie won’t begin shooting until summer of 2022.
Inspired by movies like “Rocky” and “Creed,” the sports drama mirrors Garcia’s own journey and follows a Mexican American boxer named Alex Guerrero (Garcia) whose struggles with mental health rival his toughest bouts in the ring.

The story follows a romantic dreamer whose quest for love takes him from Mexico to New Orleans, where he falls for an exotic dancer and must contend with her dangerous former lover.
Alex Garcia produces Refugio with Santiago Garcia Galvan, Bruno Bichir, Bichir himself, and Walkiria Barbosa. The film screened on Wednesday (May 11) in Cannes and will again on Saturday (May 14).
Mundial vice-president Cristina Garza feels bullish about the film’s prospects. “It’s big, commercial and is going to do extremely well with the Us and hispanic audiences.”
Garza is on the Croisette with a strong slate. Sales titles include Tomas Portella’s Rio-set action title Special Operations (Operacoes Especiais) starring Cleo Pires, Fabricio Boliveira, Marcos Caruso and Fabiula Nascimento. It screens on Monday.
