Film and TV fans have always loved to discuss their favorite movies and shows. However, in recent times, it seems that discussions about the merits of popular media projects are being sidetracked by debates about political correctness. Why are these issues becoming more important than the movies themselves?
It seems like a long time ago now, but I can recall a time when discussions about a film or TV show dealt mostly with the on-screen events depicted in the film or TV show. That’s changed these days. If you go on any movie/TV website, you’ll find that half (or more) of the discussions are bitter arguments about some detail of the movie which is questioned regarding its political correctness.
The upcoming Star Trek Beyond is getting mired down in an argument about Sulu’s sexuality. In the new film, Sulu will be depicted as a gay man.

This week brought the news that Dwayne ‘Don’t Call Him The Rock’ Johnson has been cast as the lead in a new Doc Savage movie to be directed by Iron Man 3’s Shane Black.
Though he has fallen into obscurity over the past few decades, Doc Savage is basically the original superhero and had a huge influence on the likes of Superman and Batman. A popular character from pulp fiction magazines of the 30s and 40s, Dr. Clark Savage – also known as the Man of Bronze – possessed superhuman physical and mental capabilities and was often referred to as a “superman.”
Let’s hope the Doc Savage movie is a good one, as it could reawaken an interest in pulpier superhero films. In many ways, it does make sense for the superhero movie genre to keep itself fresh by diving right back to the beginnings of superhero fiction, and so,...

We’ve known for awhile that Dwayne Johnson is working with Shane Black on Doc Savage, but the actor has made an official announcement on his Instagram account that he will star in the film that he’s also producing.
Black said a couple of months ago that he wanted Johnson to star in the film, and the filmmaker obviously got his wish. Savage was a 1930s pulp hero popularized on radio, film, and TV. Savage’s real name is Clark Savage, Jr., and he’s a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher, and a musician. He's basically every amazing adventure hero such as James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Batman rolled into one. This is an awesome character that has embarked several incredible adventures, and it’s going to be so cool to see him brought to life on the big screen. This could be such an awesome franchise,...

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is practically a superhero himself. And now he’s going to play one onscreen.
Johnson posted on Instagram that he was taking on the role of the iconic Doc Savage, calling him “the world’s first superhero.” The film, to be written and directed by Shane Black, who’s enjoying a critical renaissance with the release of his summer comedy The Nice Guys, will be based on the 1930s and ’40s pulp fiction adventurer who predates Superman (and was actually an inspiration for the Man of Steel).
The Wrap says of the intrepid hero, “The MacGyver of his time, Savage was a physician, surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer, researcher and musician, known for his superhuman abilities in smarts and strength. The virtual Swiss Army knife of comic-book heroes, Savage has a photographic memory, is a master of disguise, and can imitate voices — along with having masterful martial arts skills.

After coming on board the project back in 2013, Shane Black has finally found his "Man of Bronze", Doc Savage. Earlier in the month Dwayne Johnson teased a role in a "cool movie" he was considering making with Black, and many speculated that it must either be the new Predator film or Savage. The former WWE champ took to Instagram today and officially confirmed that it'll be the latter. Johnson posted a lengthy message to his fans along with a photo of himself alongside Black, writers Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry, and producer Hiram Garcia. "It's Official: For all comic book fans you already know the world's first superhero (pre-dating Superman) is the "Man of Bronze" himself Clark "Doc" Savage. It is quite possible that Dwayne Johnson just became the hardest working actor in Hollywood. Having dropped some fairly specific hints in recent weeks, the star has now officially confirmed that he will headline a Doc Savage movie for filmmaker Shane Black and Sony Pictures, and Johnson could not be more excited for the project to begin.
While the actor is about to hit theatres with Kevin Hart in the upcoming comedy Central Intelligence, he also has Baywatch, Fast 8, a sequel to San Andreas and a reboot of Jumanji on his slate – not to mention the ongoing speculation about a possible role in the long-rumoured Shazam! film for DC and Warner Bros. It is Shane Black that has drawn a new commitment from the actor, though, as he prepares to turn Dwayne Johnson into a truly classic superhero.

Luke Hobbs is back in action in "Fast 8," and so is that one-man marketing machine, Dwayne Johnson.
The Rock has been promoting his new movies "Central Intelligence" and "Baywatch" on social media, and he just confirmed he'll play comic book character Doc Savage. But he also took time to post his own exclusive first look at his character in "Fast 8" -- teasing a bright future for the "new version" of Hobbs, including talks of a spinoff movie.
Here's what he wrote with the photo below:
Exclusive First Look: #Hobbs #F8
When you strip a man of all he has. All that's important to him. You force him to return to his roots.. and sometimes that's a very dangerous and twisted place.

Shane Black, who made a name for himself in the 1980s with his scripts for action films like "Lethal Weapon" and "The Last Boyscout," earned his directing stripes with 2005's acclaimed darkly comedic detective noir "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". That film saw Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer teaming up to bring down a conspiracy in contemporary Los Angeles, one that ties back to the body of a young woman.
Earlier this week came the second trailer for Black's new film "The Nice Guys," a movie which essentially plays in the same wheelhouse although changes the setting to the 1970s and swaps out the leads with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. In the wake of that release, Black revealed to The Thrillist that he has no problem returning to the genre and is up for 'Nice Guys' sequels should the first fare well:
"I have no problem with a detective franchise.

It’s still amazing to me that we live in a world where rumors about the trailers for the Batman v. Superman movie are reported in Forbes magazine. On the other hand, as Forbes signed on my pal Rob Salkowitz, an expert on comic-cons and pop culture, as a columnist, it’s apparent they understand the power of Geek Culture and I shouldn’t be so surprised.
Combining two franchises into a movie like Batman v. Superman isn’t a fresh idea, but it sure is a fun one. So as Hollywood and Warner Bros look to combine the quintessential dark hero with his counterpart, I thought it would be interesting to see how it was done with their prototypes.
The Shadow and Doc Savage were created for the pulps and clearly inspired Batman and Superman. In fact, many argue that it’s less inspiring and more outright copycatting. For example,...

Hidden with a report today over on THR that "Iron Man 3" director Shane Black will direct and produce the reboot of 1987 action classic "Predator," comes word that Black has apparently met with "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth for a project.
That project? The "Doc Savage" movie which Black has been attached to write and direct for over a year. The project is having budgetary issues and it's presently unknown when Sony Pictures will move forward with it.
Black has previously said whomever they get to play the Man of Bronze has to be a "perfect physical specimen," a man who exudes "symmetry and perfection". That pretty much describes Hemsworth, the 6'3 Australian considered a textbook case of having "won the genetic lottery".
Black also says the aim is to bring the film's story back to the property's 1930s pulp comic roots.

The Iron Man 3 director revealed that he is looking for an actor that matches the physical attributes of the 'Man of Bronze', who uses his near-superhuman strength and mind to punish evil across the globe.

Iron Man 3 director Shane Black is planning to bring another iconic super hero to the screen. Black is planning to adapt the classic pulp-hero Doc Savage for the big screen.
Still riding high from the colossal success of Iron-Man 3, Shane Black has decided to follow up his mega-hit by moving from a man of Iron to a man of Bronze. Black will be helming another page-to-screen super hero adventure, since he has signed on to film a Doc Savage movie. Iron Man 3's Shane Black will direct and co-write the Doc Savage movie for Marvel and Sony Pictures.
The movie, based on the pulp character created by Lester Dent, Henry Ralston and John Nanovic in 1933, will focus on the adventures of the 'Man of Bronze' as he uses his near-superhuman strength and mind to punish evil across the globe.
Black, who co-wrote the film with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, is likely to make Doc Savage his next film. Neal H Moritz, Ori Marmur and Michael Uslan will produce the blockbuster, a Sony press release stated.
Columbia Pictures president of production said of Black's involvement: "We couldn't be more excited to be building a franchise from the ground up with Shane and this team.
"Shane and Neal have a fantastic understanding of the character and a great take on the material and we can't wait to get this production up and running.

After Marvel's "The Avengers" became the highest-grossing film of 2012, plenty of actors have come forward wanting to join the franchise, including Jean-Claude Van Damme, who expressed his interest in playing a superhero in the sequel. "I read that Chris Hemsworth (Thor) would like me to co-star in 'The Avengers 2' movie," he wrote on his Facebook page. "It would be fun to play one of these types of amazing comic book characters again. By the way, I am a big fan of Marvel's superhero Silver Surfer and also another heroic fictional character known as Doc Savage - the Man of Bronze!" Unfortunately film rights to Silver Surfer belong to 20th Century Fox and the rights to Doc Savage have moved over to DC. So while Van Damme won't play the Silver Surfer in "The Avengers 2," maybe 20th Century Fox will make his wish come true.

I read that Chris Hemsworth (star of “Thor” and brother of Liam Hemsworth, “The Expendables 2″) would like me to costar in “The Avengers 2″ movie! Well, it would be fun to play one of these types of amazing comic book characters again.

After "Marvel's the Avengers" smashed a couple dozen box office records, it's safe to say that a lot of actors wouldn't mind assembling alongside Iron Man and Captain America. The cast of "Avengers" just made it look like so much fun, and that's some fun that action movie legend Jean-Claude Van Damme wouldn't mind getting in on. If Joss Whedon wants a bit of Van Damme's brand of kickboxing-inspired action, that is. The actor wrote on his Facebook page:

While there wasn't enough “machismo” in The Avengers for The Expendables 2’s Dolph Lundgren, his co-star and fellow veteran action star Jean-Claude Van Damme would be game for a role in Marvel’s 2015 sequel. Revealing so via Facebook, the Belgian martial artist / actor wrote: “It was my pleasure to meet Mr. Stan Lee back in 1994, along with Mr. Samuel & Mr. Victor Hadida! The fifth installment of Altus Press’ Wild Adventures Of Doc Savage will feature a foe unfamiliar to the influential pulp hero , but familiar to all of us: King Kong. To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Doc Savage, the special book from Will Murray and Joe DeVito comes out in March. The press release is pulpy in itself, so I’m going to just lay it on you guys:
Eighty years ago in February, 1933 the Street & Smith company released the first issue of Doc Savage Magazine, introducing one of the most popular and influential pulp superheroes ever to hit the American scene. Doc Savage was the greatest adventure and scientist of his era, and while his magazine ended in 1949, he influenced the creators of Superman, Batman, Star Trek, The Man from Uncle and the Marvel Universe—to name only a few.

Columbia Pictures is resurrecting Doc Savage for the silver screen.Known as the Man of Bronze, Doc Savage was one of the most popular characters in the pulp novels of the 1930s and '40s. Savage was also known on radio, film and TV. Savage used his powers to fight evil all over the world.Shane Black is attached to direct the film from a screenplay he is writing with Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry.According to Variety, Neal Moritz will produce through his Original Film production company.After...

Director Shane Black (”Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang”, “Lethal Weapon”) has been tapped by Columbia Pictures to direct a big-screen version of the adventures of pulp hero “Doc Savage”, the Man of Bronze. Originally published in American pulp magazines during the 1930s and 1940s, the character was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston and editor John L. Nanovic, with additional material contributed by the series’ main writer Lester Dent. The character, often depicted literally with bronzed skin (which has later on been explained as Savage being one of the first mixed-race fictional literary heroes), is an adventurer and scientist who travels the world in various adventures. The character has [...]...

Columbia Pictures is taking audiences back to the Bronze Age with their new big screen version of Doc Savage. The “Man of Bronze” is in vogue these days with a new comic series team up with Batman coming from DC and this new film update.
Savage was one of the most popular characters of pulp novels, films and comic books in the 1930’s and ‘40s. He also saw success in radio, TV and film. Trained since birth to be nearly superhuman in every way, Doc Savage uses his skills and powers to fight evil all over the world.
Shane Black is attached to direct the film from a screenplay he’s writing with Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry (Cold Warrior and Tick-Tock). Neal Moritz (Fast and Furious) will produce. Black was attached back in October with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who were attached as producers, though I guess they have left the project.

Shane Black is to direct a film version of Doc Savage, based on a script he co-wrote. It certainly makes us wonder if Mr Black is a fan of the site, because we love our pulp fictions at Total Film. Doc Savage hit the big screen before in an unmemorable 1975 movie, but the character's certainly ripe for a revamp: Clark Savage Jr. is trained to physical and mental perfection, and then becomes a globe-trotting adventurer. It'll be exciting to see what Black does with the material. Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze, is a pretty...

Wills is Open to Die Hard 5 and Unbreakable 2: In a pair of interview quotes Bruce Willis talks about the possibility of Unbreakable 2 and seems quite confident there will be a Die Hard 5.
As for Unbreakable 2 he says, "I talked to [M. Night Shyamalan] over the holidays, and he is still thinking about doing the fight movie between me and Sam [Jackson] that we were gonna do [with the first movie, but] we chose to do the origin." Willis says he's up for it if Jackson is.
The Die Hard 5 info sounds more probable (video to the right) with Willis saying explicitly, "I think we're going to do a Die Hard 5 next year." As the Die Hard story has expanded over the years, going from a skyscraper, to an airport, to New York City and finally to the whole of the United States in Live Free or Die Hard, Willis says the fifth one would go even further saying "it's got to go worldwide.

According to Variety, Columbia Pictures' live-action adaptation of the classic pulp action hero Doc Savage is moving forward with Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) in the director's chair. Black has a string of high-profile screenwriting credits to his name, including the original Lethal Weapon, but his one and only turn as a director, 2005's Neo Noir Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, tanked at the box office.
Black was originally attached to the as-yet-untitled Doc Savage feature as the writer of the screenplay only, but has since brought in the writing team of Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry to assist with the script. Producer Neal Moritz (Fast and Furious) is producing through his Original Film production company for Sony/Columbia.

After numerous stops and starts over the years, the Man of Bronze looks to be making his triumphant return to the big screen. Sony has set Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) to write and direct a new Doc Savage movie based on the many pulp novels (and subsequent comics) from the 30s and 40s. Savage, who's something like an old-school Batman (without all the dead parent issues), has no superpowers but was instead trained from birth to be superhuman. He's described as having the intellect...

The novelist and senior copywriter's first comic project sees him take on the Man of Bronze in a monthly series spinning out of Brian Azzarello's forthcoming First Wave universe. This week I am personally fired up for the new Marvel series S.W.O.R.D. #1 by new Thor writer Kieron Gillen and Steven Sanders. The last time I saw Sanders he did the Five Fists of Science with Matt Fraction that feels like it was a century ago. The series is a spinoff from Joss Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men where we follow Agent Brand, Beast and Lockheed through the cosmos.
Following that is the new Doctor Strange spinoff, Strange by Mark Waid and Emma Rios. Being a nut for all things Deadpool, the latest issue of Amazing Spider-Man guest stars the Merc with a Mouth. But that’s not really why I’m buying the issue, its ’cause the awesome Eric Canete draws the issue.

One of the pulpiest of all pulp heroes, Doc Savage, is polishing his pistol and gathering his Fabulous Five friends for a big-screen adventure, courtesy of Lethal Weapon guy Shane Black. One of the few remaining legendary pulp fiction characters to receive a modern retelling may be headed to the big screen, courtesy of the wonder team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Now there is talk that they plan on producing a live-action Doc Savage feature.
