Luke Arnold’s latest thriller, Scrublands, sees Martin Scarsden’s investigation into the tragic church killings orchestrated by Pastor Byron Swift. Those who knew Pastor Byron Swift (Jay Ryan) said he was a generous and kind-hearted man. He treated everyone with respect and was always the first to volunteer to serve the community. He preached the teachings of Christ but never forced or pressured anyone to follow suit. Maybe that’s why no one would have suspected what was going to happen next. One day, while everyone gathered around the church for their morning prayers, Pastor Swift went berserk. He cold-bloodedly murdered Craig (Martin Copping), Tom (Scott Major), Alf (Fletcher Humphrys), Hugh (Ben De Pagter), and Gerry (Adam Morgan) with his long-range rifle. Robbie, the cop, arrived at the scene, shot Pastor Swift, and ended his killing spree.

Following on from their collaboration on Foxtel/Sky UK’s The End, writer and producer Samantha Strauss and See-Saw Films have formed a joint venture in production company Picking Scabs.
The partnership will develop projects for Strauss to write and produce in both Australia and overseas, with Strauss to work closely with See-Saw producer and EP Rachel Gardner on the slate.
“We want to tell stories that are a bit itchy and a lot addictive; that dig below the scab and broken skin and investigate all sorts of wounds that haven’t healed properly,” said Strauss.
“Let them bleed, weep and breathe. The opportunity to tell more of these stories, with the brilliantly supportive and talented See-Saw family, fills my writer heart with glee.”

In today’s film news roundup, “The Trip to Greece” will be released on May 22, Easter weekend will see a TV release of Fathom Events’ “Jesus,” and a Mary Pickford project is in the works.
‘The Trip’ Returns
IFC Films has set a May 22 digital and on demand release for the Steve Coogan-Rob Brydon comedy “The Trip to Greece,” the third sequel in director Michael Winterbottom’s travel series.
The trailer, released Wednesday, shows the duo retracing Odysseus’s footsteps in only six days with stops at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, the Ancient Agora of Athens, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the island of Hydra, the Caves of Diros and Niokastro Fortress in Pylos. There are also the trademark celebrity impressions — Marlon Brando and Sean Connery in the new iteration — plus gourmet meals and plenty of barbed commentary, such as Coogan asserting that he’s gotten better looking with age.

Foxtel has four dramas in development including Lawyer X: The story of Informer 3838, based on the true story of Nicola Gobbo, the criminal barrister who was a police informant from 1995 until 2009 during Melbourne’s gangland wars.
“A Place to Call Home was so loved by older audiences, who are under-served in this market, it would be great to find something that hits that mark,” Carly Heaton, Foxtel executive in charge of drama production, tells If. “There are a few interesting projects floating around but we haven’t yet got one where we say,...

Samantha Strauss.
Samantha Strauss met with executives at Fox Searchlight during what she describes as a “water bottle” tour of Los Angeles in January last year.
That visit has paid off handsomely as the Dance Academy creator has been commissioned to script a movie about Joan Quigley, the San Francisco astrologer who became a confidante to First Lady Nancy Reagan and President Ronald Reagan.
John Madden will direct President’s Astrologer, produced by Damian Jones for Fox Searchlight, one of the Fox units which will soon be folded into the Walt Disney Co. as part of a $US71.3 billion deal with Rupert Murdoch’s company.
Fox Searchlight execs had read a sample of Strauss’ work on The End, See-Saw Films’ 10-part drama co-commissioned by Foxtel and Sky UK. They thought the tone was perfect for Madden’s film, which will relate how Nancy Reagan secretly hired Quigley as the White House...

The end is about to begin in the fourth and final season of the Starz series “Black Sails.” The prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel “Treasure Island” may be taking its last bow, but not before capturing a massive war in the West Indies between the British settlers and pirates. A new trailer for the drama debuted at New York Comic Con, which shows that the shores of New Providence have never been bloodier.
“Right now, good men are not what the moment requires,” the trailer intones. “Right now, the time calls for dark men to do dark things.” Sounds like a good time.
Blasting cannons and battling ships follow, with John Silver (Luke Arnold), Eleanor (Hannah New), and Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) preparing for war. Confirming that the series will end with a bang, Flint says, “We came here not just to expel England, but to defeat them.

Black Sails, the Treasure Island prequel series that has enjoyed a relatively successful run on Starz, will pull into port for the final time on January 29, 2017 with the premiere of its fourth and final season.
As previously reported, the network is primed to close the book on the swashbuckling series early next year, purely because the creative team involved “couldn’t imagine anything beyond it that would make for a better ending to the story nor a more natural handoff to Treasure Island.” Such is the catch-22 with crafting prequel stories.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that the high seas drama will sail onto Starz in 2017 at half-mast – Black Sails season 4 will find our pirates doing battle in the West Indies, and it’s safe to assume that all involved will be gunning to send off the period piece on a high note, potentially even jostling for a...

Following their success on "Searching for Sugar Man," Universal Music Group and Passion Pictures are re-teaming to produce a documentary feature about the life of Inxs lead singer Michael Hutchence.
Hutchence's friend and filmmaker Richard Lowenstein ("He Died with a Felafel in His Hand," "Say a Little Prayer") will direct. Lowenstein has reportedly been "working on the definitive documentary film journey into the heart and soul of this complex, shy, poetic and exceptionally charismatic man for many years."
Lowenstein is deeply familiar with the material, directing the majority of Hutchence and Inxs's music videos along with the singer's only lead role in a film - 1986's "Dogs in Space". Hutchence's daughter Tiger Lily will be a beneficiary of the film's proceeds.
The story of Hutchence was most recently adapted into the 2014 Australian mini-series "Never Tear Us Apart" with "Black Sails" star Luke Arnold as the singer and the likes...
