I haven’t seen much chatter about Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth film in the Insidious horror franchise (you can read our review Here), but movie-goers have obviously been showing up for it. The film had a very successful opening weekend, drawing in $32.65 million at the domestic box office and $64 million worldwide on a budget that’s said to be around $16 million. Now The Numbers has confirmed that Insidious: The Red Door has managed to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise at the worldwide box office. It’s currently sitting at a total of $174,382,000, surpassing its predecessor Insidious: The Last Key‘s final count of $172,811,971. And its theatrical run isn’t over yet.
As of right now, Insidious: The Red Door‘s domestic number sits at $78,082,000, so Insidious: Chapter 2 still holds the domestic record of $83,586,447. But if The Red Door can manage to pull in another $5 million and change at home,...

Sony is probably feeling very glad that they already have the spin-off Thread: An Insidious Tale in the works, with Jeremy Slater writing/directing and Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani attached to star. While examining the film’s success, Deadline revealed that there was a point when the filmmakers were concerned that the movie wasn’t scary enough, so there were reshoots to enhance the jump scares!

Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is barely winning an unexpectedly close race with “Insidious: The Red Door” on international box office charts, with each film collecting roughly $31 million over the weekend.
Based on Sunday’s estimates, “Indiana Jones 5” is ever-so-slightly ahead of “Insidious 5” with $31.8 million for Harrison Ford’s swashbuckling adventure and $31.4 million for Sony’s paranormal horror story.
“The Red Door” easily took town “Dial of Destiny” at the domestic box office, with the former earning $32.6 million in its debut. It marked the second-best opening weekend of the franchise behind 2013’s “Insidious: Chapter 2” ($40 million).
Overseas, the newest “Insidious” movie managed to secure the best start for a horror film in pandemic times, as well as the biggest start of the supernatural-horror series in comparable markets. Top markets include Mexico ($5.8 million) the Philippines ($3.7 million) and the U.K. ($2.8 million).

Big summer tentpoles continue to struggle at the domestic box office, where a horror pic took down Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Insidious: The Red Door opened to an estimated $32.7 million to win the July 7-9 weekend, beating out Indy 5, which fell to No. 2 in its sophomore outing with an estimated $26.5 million.
The Red Door overperformed despite weak reviews, scoring the second-best domestic opening of the series behind 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2 ($40.3 million), not adjusted for inflation. Overseas, the movie also did frightfully well, grossing $31.4 million for a global bow of $64.1 million against a reported budget of just $16 million.
Heading into the weekend, prerelease tracking had suggested that the fifth and final Insidious installment, helmed by series star Patrick Wilson in his feature directorial debut, would earn $25 million or more. Screen Gems partnered with Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse on the horror pic, which reteams the original cast,...

Indiana Jones had a short-lived box office reign. Disney’s action-adventure “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” dropped to the No. 2 spot in its second weekend of release, earning $26.5 million from 4,600 North American theaters. It was dethroned by Sony’s horror-thriller “Insidious: The Red Door,” which beat expectations with its $32.6 million debut from 3,188 venues.
Ticket sales for “Indiana Jones,” the fifth and final installment to star Harrison Ford’s swashbuckling adventurer, declined by 56% from its $60 million opening weekend, continuing the theatrical misfortunes for the nearly $300 million-budgeted movie. “Dial of Destiny” added $31.8 million at the international box office, bringing worldwide ticket sales to $247.9 million. It has a long and winding journey to get out of the red, at least in its box office run.
The fifth “Insidious” movie cost just $16 million to make, so it’s already reaping big rewards in its box office run. That improves on the start of its predecessor,...

Indiana Jones has faced Nazis and aliens, snakes and the fury of an Old Testament God — but he has never faced the terrors of the Red Door.
Sony’s “Insidious: The Red Door,” the latest installment in the supernatural series, blew by expectations on its opening day with a $15.2 million gross from 3,188 venues — a figure that includes $5 million in Thursday previews. Horror entries usually face front-loaded weekend performances, but the Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films and Blumhouse co-production has fired off with a commanding lead. It looks to land the top spot on domestic charts for the weekend, projecting a $31 million haul and toppling last week’s victor “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in the process.
Ho-hum, it’s another unimpeachable box office success story for the horror genre. Studios and exhibitors are still having trouble fully bouncing back after the Covid pandemic shuttered business — this summer’s box...

Insidious: The Red Door scared up a hefty $15 million-plus at the Friday box office — including $5 million in Thursday previews — for a projected $30 million to $33 million opening in North America. The horror pic should now have no trouble scaring off Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and winning the weekend.
Elsewhere, Lionsgate’s R-rated raunchy comedy Joy Ride is stalling in its domestic debut, while the conservative-leaning movie Sound of Freedom continues to set off fireworks after opening on July Fourth.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is falling to No. 2 in its second outing in more bad news for the big-budget tentpole. The pic, from Lucasfilm and Disney, looks to fall 58 percent or more to $25 million to $28 million. That’s the biggest decline of the series.

Sony’s “Insidious: The Red Door” scared up $5 million in Thursday night screenings, a strong start for the moderately-priced horror flick. It was also nearly enough to displace “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which made $5.2 million on the same day. Indy may still top the box office in its second weekend of release, but “Insidious: The Red Door” is proving to be more competitive than some thought. The latest installment in the long-running horror franchise is expected to net $25 million during its debut weekend.
The weekend’s other major new release, Lionsgate and Point Grey’s “Joy Ride,” earned $1.1 million in Thursday previews. The R-rated comedy is expected to generate between $7 million to $9 million in its debut. “Joy Ride” is the feature directing debut of “Crazy Rich Asians” co-screenwriter Adele Lim. Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth installment of the Insidious franchise and helmed by actor-turned-director Patrick Wilson, promises a dive into the haunted memories of the past, but the script by Scott Teems delivers little more than a stifling yawn. Alongside Wilson, the film stars Ty Simpkins, Rose Bryne and Sinclair Daniel.
The film begins where Insidious 2 concluded, with Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his suppressed memories of “The Further.” It then abruptly shifts to the solemn setting of the funeral of Josh’s mother, Lorraine (played by Barbara Hershey in previous films). While Dalton (Simpkins), Josh’s oldest son, reads from Scripture, the estranged Josh and Renai (Bryne) and other siblings wrestle with their loss. Also at the funeral, an encounter with Carl (played by Steve Coulter in previous films), the man responsible for erasing Josh’s memories, highlights the depths of Josh’s amnesia.

Lin Shaye Reflects on Elise Rainer’s Franchise Legacy Ahead of ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ [Interview]
Actor Lin Shaye’s memorable introduction as psychic Elise Rainer in 2011’s Insidious quickly established the character as a franchise mainstay. Sony Pictures is heading back into The Further with Insidious: The Red Door, set to release in theaters on July 7, and we can expect to see Elise in some form.
What’s an Insidious movie without the tough-as-nails Elise, after all?
Especially as the horror franchise returns to the Lambert family in Insidious: The Red Door, directed by and starring Patrick Wilson. Family secrets will be revealed as the Lamberts return to The Further again, encountering demons from the past and brand new terrors.
In the film, “To put their demons to rest once and for all, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and a college-aged Dalton (Ty Simpkins) must go deeper into The Further than ever before.”

It’s been 5 years since the last Insidious came out, but since Insidious: Chapter 3 and Insidious: The Last Key are prequels to Insidious: Chapter 1, we definitely need a refresher for all things fiery faces and red doors. All four films have been written by Leigh Wannel, and the first two chapters which we will be concentrating a little more on in this article were directed by James Wan. Chapters 1 & 2 follow the Lambert family that includes Josh, the father (Patrick Wilson), Renai, the mother (Rose Byrne) and three kids Dalton (Ty Simpkins), Foster (Andrew Astor) and infant baby girl Kali (Madison Bowie). Dalton goes into The Further (which we’ll discuss in a minute) because he’s gifted like his father to travel the dark side of the world (not the web). Okay, that’s a bit dramatic, but basically, he can astral project himself and soul travel amongst the dead in some middle space.

All four films in the Insidious franchise to this point have been rated PG-13, and the upcoming fifth film isn’t going to shake things up. And this rating comes along just in time for tickets to go on sale, as they’re now available on sites like Fandango.
Insidious: The Red Door marks the feature directorial debut of Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2 star Patrick Wilson. The screenplay was written by Halloween Kills co-writer Scott Teems, based on an idea from Leigh Whannell, who created the franchise with James Wan. Last week, Sony Pictures unveiled a trailer for the fifth film in the Insidious franchise, Insidious: The Red Door, which is set to reach theatres on July 7th. You can check that out in the embed above. As you may have gathered from other recent articles here on JoBlo, our own Chris Bumbray is currently attending CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, in Las Vegas – and during the Sony presentation, he and other attendees had the chance to watch an extended trailer for Insidious: The Red Door.
Bumbray reports that the extended trailer “sets up the premise of the movie. The kid from the original, Dalton, is now haunted by The Further and the film seems to center around him. It actually looks pretty terrifying, but we didn’t see much more than the trailer that came out last week.” So the good news is...

The "Insidious" series is back, and for the first time since 2013, the latest movie from James Wan and Leigh Whannell's horror universe is set to bring the scares back to where they all began: to the Lambert family and their haunted son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins). If you've been keeping up with the more recent "Insidious" installments, you might remember that 2018's "Insidious: The Last Key" ended with Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) getting a call about Dalton, the son of a boy she helped years ago.
The first trailer for the new film offers a look at what's due to be the fifth and possibly last "Insidious" film, which is set to close the book on the Lambert family's ordeal for good. At the end of the second movie, it seems as though the Lambert family has shed their satanic visions. Fast forward to the modern day, Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins) are back to face a new set of problems — like Dalton’s first year at college and a fresh group of nightmarish monsters.
While these two have been able to steer clear of The Further for a decade, all that is about to change when they are forced to confront their demons once again. What lies behind the red door? The Lambert...
