Most of the well-known mermaid films are romantic and upbeat, from the tween fantasy "Aquamarine" to Disney's revolutionary animated feature "The Little Mermaid" (which will be reimagined as a live-action movie in May), and the sex comedy "Splash" where Tom Hanks meets a beautiful mermaid who also happens to be the girl of his dreams. But mermaids can also be a nightmare.
In Greek mythology, mermaids — also known as sirens — are half-human, half-sea creatures who are mysterious and inquisitive, but also deceitful. According to folklore from around the world, female mermaids are harborers of doom. They use their bewitching singing voices to hypnotize male sailors and lure them to a watery death. In Homer's "Odyssey," Odysseus forces his men to fill their ears with wax so that they are not tempted by a mermaid's enchanting song.

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for all episodes of “The Girl Before,” which arrived to HBO Max on February 10.
David Oyelowo isn’t eager to inhabit a minimalist home like his character from “The Girl Before.” “It would probably be fun for a weekend as a novelty, but this is not the place for me,” he says. “If Edward Monkford were my landlord, I think he would murder me.”
And murder was certainly on viewers’ minds during the four-episode HBO Max series, as Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Jane doggedly pursues answers about the death of her building’s former tenant, Emma (Jessica Plummer).
Before joining the cast, Oyelowo didn’t read the book “The Girl Before” is based on, written by creator and executive producer J.P. Delaney: “I didn’t want to know, because that’s part of the joy of it, trying to figure it out. Having all these twists and turns,...

“Selma” star David Oyelowo has played spies, saints, and even a guy who drowns a dog in “Chaos Walking,” but you’ve never seen him in a role quite like Svengali-esque architect Edward in “The Girl Before,” which premieres on HBO Max on Feb. 10. It’s based on the 2016 novel of the same name by J.P. Delaney, who adapted it for television.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as Jane, who’s trying recover from a tragic loss. She applies to live rent-free at One Fulgate House, an ultra-modern, minimalist house designed by Edward, who has some very strict rules for his tenants. Jane encounters his rarely-given approval, and he soon makes his romantic intentions towards her clear. He becomes her lover as well as her landlord, but when she learns the previous female tenant, Emma (Jessica Plummer) – who looked remarkably like her – died in the house, she wonders if she can really trust him.

British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw has performed in nearly every genre of film since breaking out in the 2013 Amma Asante-directed feature, “Belle.” Since then, Mbatha-Raw has played a pop star, a mother, and even a member of the Time Variance Authority in the Disney+ series, “Loki.” Now, she’s starring in the HBO Max series “The Girl Before,” a dark, twisted murder mystery about a woman named Jane (Mbatha-Raw) who moves into One Folgate Street, a minimalist house where a woman (Jessica Plummer) had previously died.
The series was a jump for the actress, not just because she was coming off the time-travel weirdness of “Loki.” But it was an opportunity to take the reins as an associate producer on the limited series, collaborating on several of the day-to-day elements as well as playing a frustrated, sometimes scared, woman searching for answers. On top of that, the performers were all...

There’s a feeling of familiarity in Lisa Brühlmann’s adaptation of J.P. Delaney’s “The Girl Before.” It’s possible that feeling comes from how deeply inspired it seems by Hitchcock features, particularly “Vertigo.” Or maybe it’s how the story weaves between two separate women who share far more in common than they realize. Brühlmann herself has worked on twisty stories of dueling women in the likes of “Killing Eve,” and while this HBO Max series never veers into that frenetic territory, it shows the quadrants “The Girl Before” is hitting. It makes for one emotionally complex and engaging four-part series.
As Jane (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) says upon entering the minimalist house designed by brilliant architect Edward Monkford (David Oyelowo), “It feels like it’s waiting for someone.” The house itself has everything: a below market rent, a housekeeper system that would make Siri blush, and a list of...

EastEnders actress Jessica Plummer has joined Gugu Mbatha-Raw and David Oyelowo in HBO Max and BBC One’s limited series The Girl Before.

Zurich-Berlin based Tellfilm, producer of “Blue My Mind” from “Killing Eve” director Lisa Brühlmann, is set to go into production on Aug. 22 on its biggest movie yet, “Monte Verità,” a period drama about a woman’s across-the-board emancipation.
Set to shoot in the Locarno region of Ticino, southern Switzerland, “Monte Verita” is lead produced by Tellfilm and co-produced by Vienna’s Kgp Filmproduction and Coin Film in Germany’s Cologne.
Directed by Stefan Jäger (“Horizon Beautiful”), “Monte Verità” consolidates Tellfilm’s transformation from a company making movies targeting the Swiss domestic market into one creating higher-profile European co-productions.
“‘Blue My Mind’ and ‘Animals’ marked a kind of breakthrough for us. ’Monte Verità’ is our next step, the biggest Telefilm production to date. We have become bigger and more international,” said Katrin Renz, CEO at Tellfilm and one of the European Film Promotion’s 2018 Producers on the Move at the 71st Cannes Festival.

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Drama Directing lists 295 episodes (from 156 series), so there will eight nominees in this category for the first time, per new rules. Although this category never had a guaranteed seven slots, close votes resulted in lineups of seven nominees in six of the last 15 years, including last year:
“Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Iron Throne” (David Benioff & D.B. Weiss) “Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Last of the Starks” (David Nutter) “Game of Thrones” season 8: “The Long Night” (Miguel Sapochnik) “The Handmaid’s Tale” season 2B: “Holly” (Daina Reid) “Killing Eve” season 2: “Desperate Times” (Lisa Brühlmann) Winner — “Ozark” season 2: “Reparations” (Jason Bateman) “Succession” season 1: “Celebration” (Adam McKay)
Although Jason Bateman returned as a director on “Ozark” for its third season, he cannot repeat his win, as he is instead submitting the pilot of “The Outsider,” which is next to “Ozark” on the long ballot.

Throughout his prolific filmmaking career, M. Night Shyamalan has become synonymous with precision filmmaking, daring premises, and unpredictable twists. As one of the flagship series on Apple TV+, “Servant” bears the unmistakable Shyamalan imprint, with a wry and outlandish sense of humor thrown in. While even Shyamalan’s most chilling horror films bear some humorous flourishes, the sensibility here is enhanced by the show’s creator and writer, Tony Basgallop (“Berlin Station”). Aided by a wildly unhinged and specific performance from Lauren Ambrose, who plays a mother in denial over the death of her infant son, “Servant” feels like a fresh take on the darkly comic genre thriller.
“Servant” is only Shyamalan’s second TV series as executive producer (he previously produced the Fox series “Wayward Pines”), but the exacting auteur has perfected the art of schooling his directors in his way of shooting and working with actors — and he has incredibly high standards.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Sunday, September 22 and will air live coast-to-coast on Fox. The network has opted to follow the lead of the Oscars and go without a host. That should speed up the proceedings. Over the course of a jam-packed three hours, 27 awards will be handed out.
While that is three more awards than either the Oscars or Tonys, it represents only about a fifth of the 123 categories at the Emmys. The bulk of these — 96 in all — were bestowed at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies on the weekend of September 14 and 15.
Last year’s big Emmy winners were HBO’s “Game of Thrones” for Best Drama Series and Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. MaiseL” for Best Comedy Series. Will both shows repeat this year? “Game of Thrones,” which signed off earlier this year, is predicted to win the top trophy on the drama side for a fourth time.

Two years ago, “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” Reed Morano ended a 22-year cold streak when she became just the third woman to win the Best Drama Directing Emmy. Two women have a chance of joining that group this year to be No. 4: Daina Reid for “Handmaid’s” and Lisa Brühlmann for “Killing Eve.”
Before Morano, the only female drama directing champs were Karen Arthur and Mimi Leder. Morano’s field included two other women, her fellow “Handmaid’s” director Kate Dennis and Lesli Linka Glatter for “Homeland.” Last year, “Handmaid’s” helmer Kari Skogland, who was the only woman in the lineup, was the odds-on frontrunner to win, but the award ended up going to Stephen Daldry for “The Crown.”
Reid, whose nominated episode is “Holly” — one of “Handmaid’s” three eligible orphaned episodes this cycle — and Brühlmann, nominated for “Desperate Times,” are up against three “Game of Thrones...

Our combined Emmy odds currently peg “Game of Thrones” as the front-runner for Best Drama Directing for the battle-centric episode “The Long Night” (by Miguel Sapochnik). But what about the other two “Thrones” episodes nominated in this race: “The Last of the Starks” (by David Nutter) and “The Iron Throne” (by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss)? I joined Gold Derby editors Riley Chow and Zach Laws to discuss whether “Got” is strong enough to overcome vote-splitting or another show could end up ascending the Emmy throne (watch the video slugfest above).

After a year in which just four women received Emmy nominations in directing categories — a measly 8.7% — the Television Academy bounced back by recognizing nine female directors this year, or just over 18% of the nominees in all six directing categories, according to an analysis by TheWrap.
Meanwhile, women held steady in the writing categories with 34 nominations, out of a total of 165, or 20.6%. Last year, there were 33 female writers nominated, representing 21.9% of the 151 recognized.
This year’s female directing nominees include Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, co-director of “Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé” and the lone female nominee for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, and Amy Sherman-Palladino, who won last year for directing the pilot of the Amazon Prime comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and was nominated this year for the second-season finale “All Alone.”

Luna Wedler delivers a good performance as a shy teenager navigating a new school – and a body that is radically changing
Swiss actor and film-maker Lisa Brühlmann, known in Britain for stylishly directing episodes of the TV programme Killing Eve, finally has her debut film, from 2017, released in the UK. The film looks at first like a young girl’s Euro-arthouse teen awakening, full of damaged sexuality, but it gradually becomes a body-horror romance in the manner of David Cronenberg, with a worrying hint of Ed Wood Jr. The corporeal surreality could be read as a metaphor for menstruation or depression or abuse, but it is presented as true and comes across as perfunctory and a bit flippant.
Mia (Luna Wedler) is a shy 15-year-old who has just arrived in town and has to negotiate the horrors of a new high school. In time-honoured movie style, she tries hanging out...

AMC will simulcast season two of BBC America’s Killing Eve when the series returns in April, AMC Networks announced today. The series stars recent SAG Award winner Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer.
“When we launched Killing Eve on BBC America last year we had high hopes, but no idea it would become this obsession,” said Sarah Barnett, President, Entertainment Networks for AMC Networks. “We believe we’ve just hit the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential viewers and we want to expose this brilliant series to the largest audience we can.”
Produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd for BBC America, the series revolves around Eve (Oh), an MI6 operative, and psychopath assassin Villanelle (Comer). In the second season, the action picks up just 36 seconds after the end of last season’s finale, as Villanelle has disappeared and Eve having no idea if the woman she stabbed is alive or dead.

Killing Eve, produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd and based on the Codename Villanelle novellas by Luke Jennings, hails from Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It centers on two women; Eve (Oh) is a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade security services operative whose desk-bound job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy. Villanelle (Comer) is an elegant, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. Our own Tom Kiesecoms described Blue My Mind as "a confident, full-bodied portrayal of adolescence and its fearful insecurities" in his review. We have an exclusive clip that gives a hint about the changes that a young women is experiencing. Here's the official synopsis: "15-year-old Mia and her parents move to the suburbs of Zürich. While Mia plunges into a wild teenager existence, her body begins to change oddly. First hardly noticeably, but then with a force that threatens to drive her out of her mind. Mia's transformation progresses inexorably, and she turns into the being which has slumbered within her for years... and is now gaining the upper hand." Luna Wedler and Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen star. It is the first day at a new school for teenaged Mia (Luna Wedler). At lunch break, a girl shyly tries to make friends. But the pouty, pretty Mia, who is just days away from her first period and is perhaps taking this new start as an opportunity to better her social standing, has her eyes on a different clique. Wild-child Gianna (Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen), all silky waist-length hair and bare midriff, is the sexually precocious center of a trio of girls (orbited by an undifferentiated constellation of good-looking but oafish boys) that will soon become a quartet with Mia’s inclusion.
The setup for actor-turned-writer/director Lisa Brühlmann’s debut feature is beautifully drawn and remarkably well-performed especially by Wedler and Holthuizen, but it’s hardly anything we haven’t seen in a hundred coming-of-age tales before. But then suddenly there’s Mia standing over her living room tank of tropical fish,...

There’s something about first-time filmmakers turning to the coming-of-age genre that feels oddly appropriate. Ostensibly at least, it’s a perfect experiential match between creator and creation insofar as both cineaste and protagonist are debuting into the world after a journey filled with firsts. But whatever jitters Swiss writer-director Lisa Brühlmann may have had realizing her graduation project, it doesn’t show on screen. To the contrary, in terms of craft and overall execution Blue My Mind expertly differentiates itself from its subject matter, resulting in a confident, full-bodied portrayal of adolescence and its fearful insecurities. The story centers on Mia (Luna Wedler), a sensitive teen who’s been uprooted and forced to adapt to a new school midway through the year on account of her father’s career...

"Don't you dare tell anybody, or else I'll destroy you." Uncork'd Entertainment has released an official Us trailer for a funky film from Switzerland titled Blue My Mind, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Lisa Brühlmann. This already premiered at Fantastic Fest last year, and is finally getting a release this fall. Blue My Mind is about a 15-year-old girl named Mia who begins to notice changes in her body. She starts to discover weird changes: her toes begin to web together, then she grows gills and scales. Is she turning into a mermaid? The film is already being compared to Julia Ducournau's Raw, another creepy body horror flick from Europe. Blue My Mind stars Luna Wedler as Mia, Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen, Regula Grauwiller, Georg Scharegg, Lou Haltinner, and Yael Meier. This looks quite gnarly and almost too close to Raw. Here's the official Us trailer (+ original psoter) for Lisa Brühlmann's Blue My Mind,...

Our own Tom Kiesecoms described Blue My Mind as "a highly accomplished debut by everyone involved" after he saw it at the Rotterdam fest earlier this year. His positive review goes into more detail about the film, written and directed by Lisa Brühlmann, and starring Luna Wedler and Zoë Pastelle Holthuizen. The Swiss film is "a confident, full-bodied portrayal of adolescence and its fearful insecurities." Ahead of its theatrical / VOD release in the U.S. on Friday, November 2, a new trailer has dropped, which you can watch below. It is quite intriguing and achieves its desired result -- now I really want to watch it a.s.a.p....
