Gareth Thomas (Composer/ Producer/ Director/ Actor)
Gareth's musical work mostly falls under the umbrella of [debut]....... [debut] is more than a band. It's a music and art collective with an ever-changing cast with Thomas the only permanent member and always at the center. Lying somewhere between electro pop and alternative rock, [debut] delivering soundscapes that are as cinematic and challenging, as they are intense and emotive.
[debut] began as a solo project, with the first two studio albums being instrumental electronic outings fueled by Thomas's love of analog synths and experimental music. Many of the tracks from Soaked (2006) and Set to Zero (2010) have since been featured in various film and television placements.
The band's first single, "Starting to Love It," was released in early 2013 and featured Depeche Mode drummer Christian Eigner and Recoil's Siobhan Lynch and Cyd Claire. The video, filmed by Chris Corner (IAMX/ Sneaker Pimps), was featured on Depeche Mode's social media channels, and received a 95% "thumbs up" rating from Depeche Mode fans.
The much anticipated follow-up single, "Sweet Little Girl," was released in the middle of 2013, with an acoustic in-studio version premiering five days prior. The official video was directed by renowned indie filmmaker Danny Drysdale (The Killers, IAMX).
[debut]'s 2015 album "Postcards From Berlin" marks a welcome departure from the monotony of Bieber-filled radio fodder. It's unique palate of sweeping strings and brooding pianos soar with anger and agony above pounding bunker drums and pulsating electronics. Recorded at the famous Berlin Meistersaal (U2, Depeche Mode) and the ex-Nazi halls at UFO Sound (IAMX), the album draws you through the inner turmoil and obvious suffering of darker times. Intimate and honest, difficult to define.
Live performances feature a series of black and white films, all written, produced, directed, edited by and featuring Thomas.
In 2015, Thomas made a new type of "debut" by stepping in to the lead actors role for the short thriller film, "Those Among Us".
