Just two days before Sundance Film Festival will unveil its lineup, the other major January Utah festival has released theirs. Now in its 29th iteration, next year’s Slamdance Film Festival––which will also be providing programming both in-person and online, from January 20th through 29th––has unveiled its features slate. The lineup for the festival, which opens with Moby’s Punk Rock Vegan Movie, was culled from 7,600 total submissions, 1,522 of which were features. All films selected in the Narrative Features and Documentary Features competition categories are directorial debuts without U.S. distribution, with budgets of less than 1 million Usd.

While diverse roles for women in film have made some progress in the last few years, certain female character tropes are seen again and again. Some well-known SourceFed team members have branched out from the news network to create their own channel. Bree Essrig, Matt Lieberman, and Steve Zaragoza launched the sketch comedy YouTube channel Nuclear Family on January 6, 2015.
Created in conjunction with Discovery Digital Networks, Nuclear Family will host parodies, humor segments, and musical comedy about recent pop culture, political, and cultural news. Segments will also include special guests like Allison Raskin and Gaby Dunn of the Just Between Us web series. All Nuclear Family content will live exclusively on YouTube for three days before moving to other platforms. The first sketch on Nuclear Family, a spoof video dubbed “People Try Heroin for the First Time,” features Essrig, Lieberman, Jeremy Azevedo, and Jessica Amal as two couples trying out the schedule 1 drug (but not for real).
"I feel like Nuclear Family will be something you’ve never really seen before on YouTube,” said Zaragoza in a release.

SourceFedNERD has a new face among its ranks. The Discovery Digital Networks-owned YouTube channel welcomed Australian media personality Maude Garrett to the SourceFedNERD team.
Garrett is well-known in her native country as a radio and television personality. Previously, the Australian hosted two Nickelodeon Australia shows: the kids’ afternoon segment Sarvo and the reality series Camp Orange. Garrett moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to interview top celebrities and host the Hot Hits Live from La radio show.
“A multi-faceted talent like Maude is extremely hard to come by, so welcoming her to the SourceFedNERD crew was a no-brainer,” said Jeremy Azevedo, who was made Head of Discovery Digital Networks in Los Angeles in December, via a release. “Maude’s hosting experience coupled with her infectious personality make her a perfect fit for SourceFedNERD, and we are so happy to have her on board.”

Over the past few months, SourceFed has undergone a significant reshuffling, with founding members departing the offbeat news program and fresh faces replacing them. The latest personality to add her name to the SourceFed cast is Bree Essrig.
Essrig is best known for her personal YouTube channel, where she posts everything from impressions to song parodies to drunken movie reviews. We've previously seen her on other channels as well; she served as a host for The Young Turks' PopTrigger and appeared in the Dr. 1Up web series on Machinima Prime.
With SourceFed, Essrig will serve as one of several presenters for the channel's typical blend of serious news and offbeat, humorous commentary. Here she is, in her first week on the job, delivering a typical SourceFed story alongside co-host William Haynes.

When Machinima announced the re-launch of its Machinima Prime channel, execs promised a return to the network's roots. Sure enough, the first original series from the new Prime is a classic combination of video games and comedy. It's called Dr. 1Up, and it stars Noel Carroll as the titular doctor, who provides medical advice to video game characters. Each episode features a diagnosis of a famous video game character. In the debut, Solid Snake arrives at Dr. 1Up's clinic and learns that 30 years of nonstop cigarette consumption has caused him to contract aggressive lung cancer. He doesn't seem to mind, because he's too busy hiding in boxes and launching into 30-minute long soliloquies. Meanwhile, the doctor's receptionist (played by Bree Essrig) hatches a plan to get the stars of The Last of Us to stop annoying her. Dr. 1Up was written by Woody Tondorf (who is co-leading Machinima Prime's return...

Lucas Cruikshank may not stand on top of YouTube anymore, but he still knows a cute animal when he sees one. The 20-year old creator, whose Fred character once claimed the most subscribers on YouTube, is the host of Cute Combat, a new web series on the Petsami channel. Cruikshank no longer speaks in a fast-forwarded squeak, but his personality is as hyperactive as ever, and he brings a great deal of energy to Cute Combat. As the host, he pits two categories of cute animal videos against each other and provides some commentary for each video. The first episode pits cross-species snugglefests against aggressive seagulls, with the winner (determined by viewer input) advancing on to a future episode. For a show about cute animals, Cute Combat is loaded with online video talent. In addition to Cruikshank, the series features YouTuber Michelle Glavan as its writer, and future episodes will...

On Thursday evening, The Young Turks partnered with The Rubin Report and YouTube to host a panel and party to celebrate their #ProudToLove campaign and the supreme court decisions on Doma and Prop 8. After introducing his panel of Jonny McGovern, Hannah Hart (My Drunk Kitchen, Hello Harto!), Whitney Mixter (The Real L Word), Alec Mapa (Showville), and Bree Essrig (BREEessrig), host Dave Rubin began the night by asking the panel how they were feeling about the striking down of Doma. Alec Mapa immediately brought up a memory of a time in which he had to go through customs with his husband and son, but the agent informed him he and his family were not allowed to pass through as a single unit. For him Doma means, “We’ll be able to go through customs like everybody else. And that seems like kind of a trivial thing, but it did matter.
