London, Nov 4 (Ians) Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp on Friday confirmed captain Jordan Henderson will be available for this weekend’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
Having wrapped up the Champions League group stage by beating Napoli 2-0 midweek, Liverpool will travel to Spurs for a Premier League match on Sunday.
The English professional footballer Henderson missed the 2-0 midweek win over Napoli in a Champions League game but is available for selection once again after making a swift recovery. James Milner, however, will miss Sunday’s visit to the capital after being placed in a concussion protocol having departed the game on Tuesday following the half-time interval.
Ahead of that contest, Klopp spoke to the media at the Axa Training Centre, “So, Hendo, yes, he’s available,” Klopp told his pre-match press conference.

London, Oct 29 (Ians) Liverpool will aim to reach an unbeaten milestone at Anfield when they face Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Reds can extend their run of successive home games without a loss to 30 with a win or draw against Jesse Marsch’s team. It would be their joint-sixth-longest such run in club history. In the 29 matches during the streak so far, Jurgen Klopp’s side have won 22 times and registered 17 clean sheets.
The last meeting between the sides was the corresponding fixture of 2021-22 – Liverpool won 6-0 to record their biggest ever victory over Leeds.
Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk were on the scoresheet that night – it was the first time both centre-backs in a Reds XI had scored in the same league game since September 1968, when Ron Yeats and Tommy Smith did so against Leicester City.

London, Aug 23 (Ians) Manchester United earned a deserved 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford to kick-start the Erik ten Hag era and leave their rivals winless after three Premier League games.
Ten Hag elected to drop Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire following successive losses to begin the campaign, a decision that was rewarded by a much-improved display, reports Dpa. An incisive move culminated in Sancho calmly slotting past Alisson after 16 minutes as Liverpool conceded first in a club-record seventh consecutive Premier League game.
Marcus Rashford’s goal early in the second half gave United breathing space prior to Mohamed Salah’s header nine minutes from time, which proved a mere consolation.
The hosts’ first-half display was in complete contrast to their 4-0 loss at Brentford, with Anthony Elanga — preferred to Ronaldo — striking the post early on with just Alisson to beat.
United were ahead soon after when Sancho collected Elanga’s pass,...

Although performances have certainly picked up since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool still find themselves unable to string a meaningful series of results together. They currently sit in 7th, a disappointingly low position in the minds of many fans – particularly after a bumper summer which saw the likes of Christian Benteke, Roberto Firminho, Nathaniel Clyne, and James Milner join their ranks.
As always, however, deadline day represents one last chance to give the team a boost before the business end of the season. When manager of Borussia Dortmund, Klopp was known for his shrewd activity in the transfer market, bringing players such as Mats Hummels and Marco Reus to the club.
The areas in which Liverpool need to improve are no secret. Options up front are lacking, with Danny Ings injured and Christian Benteke inconsistent. The most glaring area is in defence, with the team...

All eyes are firmly focused on the start of the new Premier League and Football League seasons, with managers and players (hopefully) concentrating on getting off to a crucial good start.
But while everyone’s attention is drawn to the action, spare a thought for the free agents of this world. The ones who are clearly talented enough for positions in Premier League teams, but just haven’t been given a second chance yet.
FIFA 16 draws ever-closer, and with the majority of teams’ transfer business completed, the free agent list for FIFA is taking shape, and there are certainly some bargains to be had. James Milner, Didier Drogba, and Yevhen Knoplyanka are three of the most talented free agents to have already found new homes during this window, but there are still plenty of big names left out there.

A sea of red shirts overpowered the tangerine orange of the Brisbane Roar as Liverpool fans blasted out their spine tingling rendition of ‘You Will Never Walk Alone’ that echoed around Lang Park. Brendan Rodgers looked unfazed by the harmonic battle cry and selected four of his new signings in his first eleven as well as Divock Origi who was out on loan at Lille last season.
Joe Gomez started at left back, Nathaniel Clyne at right back, James Milner played alongside Jordan Henderson in the middle of midfield and Danny Ings, Adam Lallana and Origi competed a 4-3-3 formation. The system didn’t look entirely comfortable and despite the Reds dominating most of the possession their counter attacks were staggered and would have looked more fluid playing a 4-1-2-1-2 that would have gave new signing Ings more comfort than being isolated on the left flank.

Manchester City have officially completed the £49m signing of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool, making the 20-year-old the most expensive English player in history, shattering the previous record set when Andy Carroll moved to Anfield for £35m.
The two-time Premier League champions have confirmed that Sterling has put pen to paper on a long-term five-year contract and will wear the vacant number 7 shirt following James Milner’s recent departure.
Speaking about the news to McFc.co.uk, City boss Manuel Pellegrini delightedly said:
“Raheem Sterling is one of the best attacking players in world football, and I am very much looking forward to him joining our squad out in Australia later this week.
“He is a young player with outstanding ability, and I am sure the Manchester City fans will be very excited about seeing him in action for the team.”

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne is set to sign for Liverpool this week for £12.5 million subject to a medical, The Mirror reports.
The Saints have accepted an offer for their star full-back and he is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Reds after completing his medical later today.
The 24-year-old who looks to be a replacement for Glen Johnson will become Liverpool’s sixth signing of the summer following the recent purchases of James Milner, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings.
Clyne made 35 appearances last season, scoring 2 goals and establishing himself as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League.
The England international who only had one year left on his existing contract will be the forth player to make the move from St Mary’s to Anfield after Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert all made the move last summer.

Just look at former Lyon captain and Brazil international Claudio Cacapa’s face. No wonder Newcastle United were relegated in 2009 with characters like this in their squad.
It’s a season that will be looked back on with some distain obviously, but one that ultimately looked the have been for the club’s best interest when they qualified for the Europa League in 2012. It cleared the squad of all the dead weight and overly inflated egos, leaving true professionals behind that only wanted the best for the club.
However, since Mike Ashley decided not to kick on and spend on the squad when the club was at its most appealing, we now find ourselves with a squad bereft of any real quality and facing a similarly turbulent end to the season like six years ago.
In all fairness, the 2008/09 season started off pretty well…

Spurs left back Danny Rose has received a shock call-up to Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad.
Injuries to Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs have left an opening in the left back slot, with the only fit recognised player in that position being Leighton Baines following Ashley Cole’s retirement.
The call-up emphasises a dramatic change in fortunes for Rose, who was thought to be nothing more than a squad player at White Hart Lane this season after the Lilywhites signed Ben Davies from Swansea City. However, having signed a new five year contract at the club, he has started the season very well and is currently their first choice left back.
He is joined in the national squad by his club team-mate Andros Townsend – a player who hasn’t seen much action at all this season and who missed the...

As the end of the summer transfer window edges ever nearer, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is still looking to make one or two additions to his squad, as they prepare an assault on both the Premier League and Champions League in 2014/15.
With the likes of Dejan Lovren, Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno bought in to bolster the defence, and central midfield options boosted by the signings of Emre Can and Adam Lallana, the only real area the Northern Irishman is probably looking at strengthening now is wide areas and up front.
According to SkyBet, the Reds are now 10/11 favourites to sign Manchester City utility man James Milner, who invariably occupies a wide attacking role but can also flourish in central midfield or at full-back. Having already signed a couple of Southampton players and Emre Can, the club have also stengthened with Lazar Markovic and are widely expected to wrap up a deal to bring in Loic Remy: but it doesn’t end there.
Rodgers has now apparently turned his attention to Manchester, in the hope of offering an escape route to James Milner as they make tentative inquires about the availability of the English midfielder. Besides the expected graphical upgrades, EA are promising the new FIFA will offer an improved, intuitive control system and tactics as your teammates react to how you play (although the choice of being able to Park The Bus seems destined to cause arguments).
Each match will be totally unique, as the commentary box pay as much attention to the on-field action as the fan reaction, the camera will cut to your team mate’s responses, and – of course – there’s a whole raft of new celebrations on offer.

Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall has emerged as a transfer target for Arsenal as the club look to replace Lukasz Fabianski, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Fabianski, who started Arsenal’s Fa Cup final win over Hull City, is set to leave the club on a free in the summer after rejecting a contract extension.
It leaves Arsene Wenger in need of a new back-up goalkeeper, with Cardiff’s Marshall reportedly viewed as the ideal man to to provide cover for Wojciech Szczesny.
Marshall enjoyed a brilliant season with Cardiff, earning plaudits for his performances despite the club’s relegation to the Championship.
The Scottish international only signed a new deal with Cardiff in February, tying him to the Bluebirds until 2018.
That long-term contract means Cardiff have set an asking-price of £15 million, an amount Wenger may be uncomfortable paying for a number two goalkeeper.

Over the years Newcastle have handed out a fair share of pastings (walloping Sheffield Wednesday 8-0, no less) and imprinted their name upon some of the most memorable matches in football history.
But as with every football club they’ve also fallen victim to the occasional massacre or failed to produce the goods when it really mattered in a big game situation. Contrary to popular belief footballers are fallible beings.
We’ve had our hearts broken, tempers boiled and frustrations set to breaking point on numerous occasions during our black and white pilgrimage and there are moments we’d probably like to forget along the way.
But here are 15 Newcastle matches that you’ve probably obliterated from your memory and will stoke some serious emotion within you. We can only apologise for the this twisted trip down memory lane.

Edin Dzeko continued his fine goal scoring form as Manchester City moved within touching distance of their second Premier League title in three seasons.
During an initially frustrating night for City, all their goals came in the second half, Dzeko netting twice, with Stevan Jovetic and Yaya Toure getting in on the act to bring up 100 league goals for the home side.
Manuel Pellegrini’s team dominated possession throughout the encounter and were worthy winners in the end, despite a spirited defensive performance from Villa.
The victory means that City can seal the Premier League title with victory over West Ham on Sunday, although given their superior goal difference a draw should be enough.
City went into the match having made two changes from the side that beat Everton on Saturday, David Silva and Aleksander Kolarov replacing Gael Clichy and the injured Sergio Aguero.

A 2-0 win to City may sound like a fairly routine result in this fixture but the score line does little to reflect the controversy and drama that surrounded events on the pitch at St James’ Park this afternoon.
Newcastle had the better of the opening exchanges with some high tempo pressing but the Magpies fell behind in the eighth minute to a slick passing move, the kind of which have become a trademark of Pellegrini’s side. Silva’s pinpoint through ball found Kolarov and with Yanga Mbwia nowhere to be seen, the City full back wasted little time in whipping in a cross for Dzeko to finish from close range. The Bosnian striker left Steven Taylor in his wake as he muscled past him for a tap in en-route to handing the Citizens the lead.

Manchester City have only lost one of their last 15 meetings with West Ham as Manuel Pellegrini’s team entertain the East Londoners at the Etihad in the Capital One Cup semi-final.
Jack Collison scored a second half winner for the Hammers at Upton Park in March 2009, but that is the only victory they’ve recorded over City since back-to-back wins in 2006. Sam Allardyce remains short of striking options, so West Ham fans shall fondly remember Dean Ashton’s brace during an Fa Cup run to the final.
The Hammers are not much better off defensively either and come into this two-legged tie off the back of four defeats in their last five. Big Sam chose the Fa Cup third round tie at Nottingham Forest to blood youngsters en masse – a move that resulted in a 5-0 thumping.

Championship team Blackburn Rovers caused the first shock of Fa Cup third round weekend when they held 2011 winners Manchester City at Ewood Park. Skipper Scott Dann earned a replay for Gary Bowyer’s side by cancelling out an Alvaro Negeredo goal.
Both strikes came from corners and now Manuel Pellegrini has yet another midweek game to plan for in January on top of two Capital One Cup semi-final legs with West Ham. City had Belgian defender Dedryck Boyata sent off at Blackburn for two bookings.
Rovers boss Bowyer handed ex-England goalie Paul Robinson his first start since December 2012 after a troublesome back problem and career-threatening blood clot on his lung. Top scorer Jordan Rhodes dropped to the bench prompting fears from home fans he would be sold.
D. J. Campbell also made way as Blackburn made three changes from their away win over Leeds.

Blackburn Rovers have never beaten Northwest rivals Manchester City since the Etihad outfit was taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008. These two sides, both former Premier League champions, will face one another in the opening game of Fa Cup third round weekend.
Bankrolled by Arab billions, City boast a recent record of six wins and three draws against Rovers. Prior to that, Blackburn managed five successive victories in this fixture – including their last meeting in the world’s oldest knockout football competition.
Mark Hughes masterminded that Fa Cup quarter-final win at Ewood Park in March 2007 with Aaron Mokoena netting the opener before being sent off. Matt Derbyshire later sealed victory for Rovers. Hughes later went on to manage City.
South African striker Benni McCarthy scored the only goal the following September when Blackburn last won this encounter.

Manchester City have temporarily gone top of the Premier League table with a 3-2 victory at Swansea. Fernandinho, Yaya Toure and Aleksandar Kolarov were all on target for Manuel Pellegrini’s team in wet Wales in this win despite a Wilfried Bony brace.
Swans manager Michael Laudrup made two changes to the XI that drew at Aston Villa. Goalscorer Roland Lamah and Dwight Tiendalli dropped to the bench as Angel Rangel and Wayne Routledge returned.
City coach Manuel Pellegrini meanwhile brought Samir Nasri, Alvaro Negredo and Yaya Toure back after resting the trio for the narrow home win over Crystal Palace. Aleksandar Kolarov and Pablo Zabaleta came into the fullback berths too. Dedryck Boayata, Gael Clicy, Javi Garcia, James Milner and David Silva dropped out.

Manchester City put six past Arsenal in a high-octane encounter to continue their undefeated run at home and move to within three points of the Premier League leaders.
Theo Walcott scored twice to give the visitors a chance and Per Mertesacker headed a third, but goals from Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Negredo, David Silva, Yaya Toure and a brace from Fernandinho blew Arsene Wenger’s side away.
The Gunners could have opened an eight-point lead at the top of the table this evening but that never looked likely as it took Aguero just 14 minutes to break the deadlock, firing in from close range following Martin Demichelis’ headed flick-on.
Walcott levelled the scores when his shot into the ground deceived Demichelis and Costel Pantilimon 15 minutes later but Negredo ensured the home side went into half time in front after stabbing in Pablo Zabaleta’s cross.

Manchester City engineered a bittersweet victory coming behind after conceding two early goals to upset Champions League favourites and holders Bayern Munich away at the Allianz Arena.
Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini followed in Arsene Wenger’s footsteps as the second English side in 2013 to win at the German giants albeit in vain. The Gunners revival in March was not enough to keep them in the Champions League last term.
A 3-2 win for City on this final group stage matchday saw them failed to overhaul Bayern at the top of pool D as they came up a goal short.
Thomas Muller, so often the scourge of English teams, and Munich summer signing Mario Gotze helped themselves after poor defending by the visitors saw them make a nightmare start.

Manchester City recovered from 2-0 down at the Allianz Arena to inflict a rare defeat on Champions League holders Bayern Munich, but still finished behind them in Group D.
James Milner netted the winner after David Silva and Aleksandar Kolarov’s penalty cancelled out Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze strikes.
City made a terrible start conceding on five minutes. Defender Dante picked out Muller with a lovely long ball which the German chested down as he ran infield and away from Kolarov. Joe Hart was swiftly beaten by a low strike across him.
Bayern continued to build on their lead with Brazil’s Dante nodding a Toni Kroos free kick straight at England and City stopper Hart. Ballon d’Or nominee Franck Ribery won a corner with Joleon Lescott putting in a very shaky display in defence.
From that set piece hosts Munich doubled their lead through Gotze 12 minutes in.

Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana and forward Jay Rodriguez have been rewarded for their club’s excellent start to the Premier League season with England call-ups.
Under Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino the Saints sit sixth in the top flight level on points with Manchester City. Uncapped pair Lallana and Rodriguez join St Marys teammate Rickie Lambert in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the friendlies with Chile and Germany.
Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson earns a recall and right back Glen Johnson returns. Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere has also been included despite an ankle injury. Gunners pair Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remain sidelined.
Hodgson has selected three left backs for the Wembley dates in Leighton Baines (Everton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea) and Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal). Raheem Sterling drops down onto the Under-21 roster.

Alvaro Negredo bagged a hattrick and Sergio Aguero produced a man-of-the-match performance as Man City ran riot at the Etihad in a convincing Champions League victory against Cska Moscow.
The home side were awarded a penalty for a foul on David Silva in the third minute of the game. Sergio Aguero scored from the resulting spot kick to put Man City 1-0 up.
The Argentine international then doubled his side’s lead after 20 minutes. Turning in the area, Aguero side-footed his shot into the bottom corner leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.
Aguero was involved in City’s third goal around the half-hour mark. Picking up the ball on the right-hand side, he waited for his strike-partner Negredo to make a run into the six-yard box where he then fed him the ball into with Negredo having the simplest of tasks in putting the ball into an empty net.

To paraphrase one of the heroes of this story: ‘And now I know how Roy of Hodgson felt…’ Even though The Smiths released just over seventy songs over the span of their relatively short career, picking their top 20 is incredibly difficult. Actually, Roy Hodgson has it easy in comparison – he has about 30 names to cut down to 23 for the World Cup. With the Smiths back catalogue, yes, there are a couple of obvious candidates that won’t make a list like this (to stretch the football analogy, for ‘Unlovable’ read James Milner), but at least 60 of their songs are worth considering.
The Smiths weren’t ahead of their time, they were timeless. They could have emerged at any point in the history of pop music and been an era defining group. Despite assumptions to the contrary, they weren’t a fey jangly guitar band – musically they covered a ridiculous amount of genres: rockabilly,...

There is no doubt that currently England is the place to play. The quality of football, the money and the fans – the Premier League has been hosting foreign talent for years, the likes of Drogba, Van Nistelrooy and Henry to name a few have savoured the triumphs that come with what is hailed as ‘The Best League in the World’ by many.
The league is evolving, before 2008 you would not look beyond Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea for the title, and then Liverpool entered the fray and then Tottenham, and with the odd surprise package like a Newcastle or Everton improving all the time it is becoming a more open competition meaning more room for the elite.
With each ‘top’ club under pressure from their fans for that blockbuster signing, the influx of foreign geniuses is only going to continue, this is a good thing, right? Who wouldn’t want the Falcao’s,...

Man City’s starting lineup against Bayern Munich in the Champions League last night was as follows; (4-4-2): Joe Hart, Micah Richards, Matija Nastasic, Vincent Kompany, Gael Clichy, Jesus Navas, Fernandinho, Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko.
After the final whistle, fingers were pointed at City manager Manuel Pellegrini for his tactics. In the first-half, his side were under the cosh on multiple occasions and the problems stemmed from midfield. It could be argued that Munich have benefited from Man City naming Aguero as a lone striker, and the extra man being put in midfield to either protect the back four, or as an extra option in attack.
Pellegrini opted against it, and the Citizens were annihilated as a result. Edin Dzeko was the strike-partner for Aguero, and was abject in the 55 minutes he played for. The Bosnia and Herzegovina international offered no...

The battle for Manchester resumes this Sunday, as Manchester United travel east across Mancunian Way to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City. Even though Red versus Blue may be the starkest of contrasts, both teams come into the game in similar states. Both have new managers, both secured strong opening victories in the Champions League, and each team has gathered seven points in the English Premier League, with comprehensive wins followed by stuttering performances (City’s draw with Stoke City and United’s loss to Liverpool come to mind).
Although this game comes relatively early in the fixture list, with victory unlikely to amount to a fatal blow for the loser, each team will be confident of putting one over on their rivals.

Manuel Pellegrini’s first season in English football was always going to be a learning curve, it’d be a learning curve for anyone, especially at one of the biggest club’s in the league right now. Going into his first Manchester derby, Pellegrini has made a similar start to his counterpart, winning 4 of the last 6 games this season.
City made an impressive start in the first Monday Night Football game of the season. They battered a sorry Newcastle side 4-0, and things looked good- only for them then to go to Championship winners Cardiff and lose 3-2.
Pellegrini’s Citizens got themselves back on track with a 2-0 win at home to Cardiff’s fellow new-boys, Hull City. The win was described as far from convincing, and those doubts were followed up by a boring 0-0 draw away at Stoke City.

West Brom are on the verge of signing Scott Sinclair on loan with the winger set to undergo a medical before his expected move to the Hawthorns this summer, according to Team Talk.
The Manchester City star is set to complete his move within the next 24 hours with his club keen on a permanent deal but West Brom hoping for a loan move.
In the end, the two clubs were able to settle on a season-long loan arrangement with the option of joining full time next summer.
Sinclair began his career with Bristol Rovers and joined Chelsea’s youth academy in 2005, where he was sent out on loan six times to Plymouth, Qpr, Charlton, Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Wigan.
The England prospect then ended up at Swansea City in 2010, where he established himself as a key part of the Swans’ set-up before being snapped up by City last year.

Wayne Rooney is a surprise inclusion in the England squad for their clash with “The Auld Enemy” on Wednesday night.
The want-away United striker has played a mere 45 minutes in pre-season, and major questions will be asked whether a player with so little game time should have been included.
Aside from “Wazza”, it’s a vital preparation game for Roy Hodgson ahead of FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month. He’ll also have a chance to blood 31-year-old striker Rickie Lambert, the Southampton star who scored 15 Premier League goals last season is yet to be capped for England.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini’s pre-season ended with a demoralising defeat as Arsenal put last season’s Premier League runners-up to the sword in a 3-1 win at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.
City had enjoyed a relatively successful pre-season which has taken in wins against Chelsea and AC Milan but their preparations for the new campaign ended in the worst possible fashion thanks to a Theo Walcott-inspired Gunners performance.
Both fielded strong sides with City pairing new signing Alvaro Negredo with Edin Dzeko up front and Arsene Wenger naming Lukas Podolski in a team that also featured Walcott.
And the England international gave Arsenal an early lead in the 8th minute after Aaron Ramsey charged toward City’s backline before picking out the winger, who duly slotted past Joe Hart with a cool finish.

Manchester City have so far been big spenders in the current transfer window, already making four big name signings – Negredo, Jovetic, Fernandinho and the subject of this article, Jesus Navas.
Navas cost City a relatively low price in this market of £17 million from Sevilla despite having been capped by the Spanish national team 28 times, admittedly many of these appearances being from off the bench. Navas was primarily used as a ‘game changer’ in a Spain system which is actually very similar to the Manchester City system in that it lacks any natural width.
The current Manchester City system is a 442/4231 with the wide players tucking right in, effectively becoming number 10′s. This means that the full backs – Zabaleta and Clichy are relied upon to provide the side with width to ensure that the side does not become too predictable. Despite the efforts of the energetic duo of Zabaleta and Clichy,...

A player picks up the ball near the halfway line and is only faced with one defender, he knows he’s substantially faster than him so he boots the ball a good 10 metres in front of himself and easily makes up the distance. He runs and lashes the ball from along the ground into the opposite corner of the goal, the keeper flaps the wrong way and watches helplessly as his net ripples away.
For anyone that plays football this happens about 10 times a season, but for one man from Wales it was the making of his career.
There’s no doubting that Gareth Bale has talent and it could easily be argued that he is the best in the world at his position right now, but there’s definitely no way he’s worth £100 million even in today’s market where Andy Carroll fetches £35,000,000 and James Milner is worth...

Manchester City are set to lose out on Malaga midfielder Isco to Real Madrid, according to The Guardian.
But the deposed Premier League champions, who also look likely to miss out Edinson Cavani, another of their summer targets, are relaxed about the situation and do not view either player as “essential signings”.
The prospect of signing Cavani from Napoli is receding by the day and while former City boss Roberto Mancini was a big admirer of the Uruguayan, his successor Manual Pellegrini does not hold him in quite the same esteem.
If Isco is signed by Madrid meanwhile and turns down the option of playing once more under the former Malaga boss at the Etihad next season, Pellegrini will not ring the alarm bells and is thought to be content with the resources he has available.
City’s plan to play 4-3-3 next season puts in context their contentment with their current midfield,...

Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup is unlikely to make too many changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Chelsea last weekend.
Neil Taylor made an appearance from the bench in that game to complete his comeback from a lengthy spell on the sidelines and he could start in place of Ben Davies.
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is however expected to ring the changes for Saturday’s visit to Wales. Matija Nastasic is expected to replace Joleon Lescott while James Milner and Javi Garcia are both pushing for starts.
Sergio Aguero is expected to keep his place in spite of the upcoming Fa Cup Final with Wigan Athletic.
Key Stats
Swansea City have failed to win any of their last six league matches, losing four and drawing two.
Man City have only lost five games in the league this season,...

Manchester City winger Scott Sinclair will seek a move away from the club this summer having started just two games all season for the former Premier League champions.
The England international is growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of first team action at the Etihad and could look into a loan move at the end of the season, with the likes of Everton, Aston Villa and West Brom all thought to be interested in the former Swansea star.
However, the 24-year old is prepared to stay in Manchester and fight for his place in City’s starting xi, but only if manager Roberto Mancini is sacked by the deposed champions.
Having fallen out of favour with the Italian, Sinclair does not see an immediate future for himself in Manchester, and though he does not want to leave the club permanently, he could still move out on loan to get some...

A bright and sunny afternoon at White Hart Lane played host to a mouth-watering top of the table clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, which Tottenham ultimately emerged from as 3-1 victors.
Spurs kicked the game off with the returning Gareth Bale and former City man Emmanuel Adebayor in the centre circle looking to keep themselves in the race for Champions League football.
The home team started brightly, attacking with quick football, and Bale tested Joe Hart for the first time in the fourth minute, curling an awkward thirty yard effort into the appreciative arms of the England stopper.
A minute later the Welshman found Dempsey on the right and the American drove in a low shot-come-cross which Hart gathered again.
But it was Manchester City who took the lead with their first attack just a few seconds later. Carlos Tevez kept possession well and found James Milner on the Tottenham byline.

Arsenal target Christian Benteke is set to snub a move to the Emirates and instead enter talks on a new double-your-money contract to keep him at Aston Villa, according to the Daily Mail.
Arsene Wenger had been an admirer of the forward, who has impressed at Villa Park since his move from Genk in August by bagging 19 goals in all competitions. He had also been tracked by both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but the Belgian has instead told manager Paul Lambert that he wants to stay where he is.
Benteke believes that by remaining at Villa Park, he will benefit from the guaranteed first-team football it provides, giving him a better chance of being called up to Belgium’s 2014 World Cup squad.
Villa are now willing to double his earnings by offering him a new £40,000-per-week contract to tie him down at the club until 2017.
It is likely that Benteke...

Blunder keeper Jose Reina cost Liverpool the three points as Brendan Rodgers’ side were held to a 2-2 draw by Premier League Champions Manchester City at the Etihad.
The hosts had taken the lead against the run of play through Edin Dzeko before Liverpool pulled one back from a sensational Daniel Sturridge drive.
The visitors then took the lead from another thunderbolt, this time through Steven Gerrard, though ultimately Reina’s gaffe would cost them dear.
The Spaniard came off his line to close down Sergio Aguero, who shot into an empty goal to level the scores.
Going into this tie, Roberto Mancini knew a win was imperative if he was to close the 10-point gap on leaders Manchester United, who defeated Fulham yesterday afternoon.
But he will have to settle for a point tonight as his champions were held by a battling Liverpool side inspired by new signing Daniel Sturridge,...

The English Premier League is undoubtedly one of the best leagues in the world. It is by far the richest, but over the last few seasons the league seems to have declined in quality.
English performances in Europe are a good gauge of the declining standards of the league over the past few seasons. Between 2006 and 2009 English football was at its peak. The league was filled with world class players and there were three English teams in the Champions League semi-final every year. The 2007/08 season was probably the pinnacle of English football as both Manchester United and Chelsea reached the Champions League final. However, since then performances have been slowly declining in Europe. Arsenal and Liverpool are no longer close to being semi-final quality teams and in the last three seasons English teams have only twice reached the semi-final. Of course on both occasions they managed to reach the final; however,...

Premier League champions Manchester City welcome Dutch side Ajax to the Eithad Stadium tonight as the two battle it out in the Champions League Group D game, which will be screened live on ITV 1 in the UK.
Manchester City are currently bottom of Group D having only managed a point in their last three games. Ajax however are third and a win tonight could see them go five points clear of Man City.
Roberto Mancini’s side crashed out of the Champions League Group stages last year and despite impressive performances from the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero this campaign, the club could be facing a similar fate again.
Group D or this year’s ‘group of death’ is made up of Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Ajax and Manchester City.
