Updated with full list of winners: Netflix’s Aaron Sorkin drama The Trial of the Chicago 7 won the marquee Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) honor Saturday to cap the American Cinema Editors’ 71st annual Ace Eddie Awards.
Alan Baumgarten, Ace, edited the pic, about the unrest around the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It puts him and the film in frontrunner status in the Best Film Editing Oscar race, where it is competing against fellow Ace nominees Nomadland and Sound of Metal along with Promising Young Woman and The Father.
Baumgarten in his virtual acceptance speech thanked Sorkin for his “enthusiasm for editing — it was a pleasure to collaborate with you.” He also thanks his wife, with a nod to the pandemic: “I think myself, and as everybody understands, I brought the work home literally — thank you for your patience and understanding.”
Chicago 7 is up for six Oscars this year including Best Picture.

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016) and “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscar predictions for Best Film Editing.)
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019). Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

Producer Jon Kilik has been working with director Spike Lee for more than three decades, going all the way back to the filmmaker’s landmark drama “Do the Right Thing” (1989). But their latest collaboration, “Da 5 Bloods,” took them overseas, filming in Vietnam and Thailand to tell the story of Black veterans of the Vietnam War returning to the country to take care of some unfinished business. For Kilik, it was a departure from Lee’s previous films in terms of the challenges of shooting on location, but artistically it’s of a piece with the rest of the director’s work. Watch our exclusive video interview with Kilik above.

Spike Lee is currently in production on a documentary film about New York City and the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Titled “NYC Epicenters 9/11 – 2021½,” it will premiere on HBO this year.
The multi-part documentary will be a sweeping portrait of how New Yorkers have rebuilt and rebounded not just from a terrorist attack but now an ongoing global pandemic. The film features over 200 interviews of citizens with firsthand accounts of 9/11.
“NYC Epicenters” will debut later this year on HBO and HBO Max and will be available in commemoration of 9/11.

David Byrne is little without his sense of humor. Of course there’s the musical prowess whose longevity persists from then-outré new wave to today’s classic-rock-radio mainstay, that uncanny ability to spin rhymes out of common phrases as if turning air into gold, astonishing physical showmanship, good looks, scholarship, decades of advocacy, even uncommon strength to cross admirably into other mediums, yet all are undergirded by flair, personality, expertly deployed sardonicism that made him a Scottish-American institution unto itself. David Byrne is, at heart, funny, and if he weren’t funny these many attributes might not hold together—less an icon than the imperceptible weirdo of immense gift.
A cocked eyebrow might be the ideal lens for watching his latest project, American Utopia, or at least key into where he’s leading with that title. A sensation nearly the second it hit Broadway last fall, the show offered 20 faithful...

HBO will air the filmed version of the Broadway show “David Byrne’s American Utopia,” directed by Spike Lee, later this year.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by HBO’s executive VP of programming Nina Rosenstein.
“‘David Byrne’s American Utopia’ is a uniquely transformative experience and a perfect example of how entertainment can bring us together during these challenging times,” said Rosenstein. “Spike’s brilliant direction adds a level of intimacy to this powerful performance, and we’re so thrilled to share this groundbreaking show with our audience.”
In 2019, Byrne collaborated with 11 other musicians to perform a modified version of his 2018 album “America Utopia,” along with several songs from his previous band, Talking Heads. The production ran at the Hudson Theater, opening on Oct. 20, 2019 and closing on Feb. 16, 2020.
The film also features work from choreographer Annie-b Parson, director of photography Ellen Kuras, production consultant Alex Timbers and editor Adam Gough.

Alfonso Cuarón’s labor of love will go down as having changed the delivery norm for top-quality feature motion pictures: unlike most foreign films before, millions had a chance to see the highly-advertised show on Netflix, even if the real life-changing way to see it was the limited 70mm theatrical run. Cuarón’s ode to his upbringing in Mexico City is a rich slice of nostalgia and ethnography, made warmly human by the performance of Yalitza Aparicio. Viewers ‘waiting for something to happen’ will miss the point entirely. Italian neorealism was never as intense or as fascinating. Criterion’s extras are really arresting, especially the featurette explaining the near-miraculous post production process.

The Mexican Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences hosted the 61st edition of their Ariel Awards on Monday evening, where Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma” and Alejandra Márquez Abella’s “The Good Girls” stood out among the winners.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Cuarón’s “Roma” scooping best picture is that it’s only the second of his films to win an Ariel award, and the first to be nominated for best picture. In 1992 “Sólo con Tu Pareja” was nominated for best first work and screenplay, and won best original story. In 2001 he chose not to submit his Oscar-nominated classic “Y tu mamá también” in protest at the Academy’s voting practices.
By the end of the Monday evening however, “Roma” netted 10 prizes, including best director, supporting actress, photography, screenplay, editing, sound, art design, visual effects and special effects to go along with the best picture prize.

As was widely anticipated, Alfonso Cuaron’s triple Oscar-winning “Roma” dominated the 6th Premios Platino nominations, unveiled Thursday at Hollywood’s legendary Roosevelt Hotel, the site of the very first Oscars. It snagged a total of nine nominations, including best film, director, art direction, cinematography, and acting for its two Oscar-nominated actresses, Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira.

Last night saw an under the radar precursor give out its prizes, which in turn may have shifted one of the Oscar categories. Yes, Friday evening saw the American Cinema Editors give out their annual Ace Eddie awards. This yearly event usually can clue us in to what the frontrunners for Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards are. That may well be the case again here, though if that’s true, the Academy and its voters are going to be making an usual choice. They already did in terms of their nominees in the category though, so I suppose this is just par for the course… In a bit of a surprise, the award for Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) went to John Ottman for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody. Ottman won in an upset over Barry Alexander Brown for BlacKkKlansman, Jay Cassidy for A Star Is Born, Tom Cross for First Man,...

“Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has been on a roll since the Golden Globes, was the surprise dramatic editing winner for John Ottman at the 69th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.
“The Favourite” (Yorgos Mavropsaridis), “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (Robert Fisher Jr.), and “Free Solo” (Bob Eisenhardt) took home comedy, animation, and documentary feature honors.
Ace is usually a great Oscar bellwether for editing (24 out of the last 28 years ), so Ottman now becomes the favorite for his deft balancing of the Freddie Mercury story (Best Actor frontrunner Rami Malek) with the Queen story under difficult circumstances when director Bryan Singer was fired and replaced by Dexter Fletcher. Ottman beat “Roma” director/editor Alfonso Cuarón and co-editor Adam Gough, Barry Alexander Brown (“BlacKkKlansman”), Tom Cross (“First Man”), and Jay Cassidy (“A Star Is Born”).

Marvel’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Black Panther” dominated the Oscar craft races on Tuesday, grabbing six nominations for costume design, production design, score (composer Ludwig Göransson), song (“All the Stars”), sound editing, and sound mixing.
But it was snubbed for visual effects after being talked up as a frontrunner, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison missed out on her second nomination after breaking the glass ceiling for last year’s “Mudbound.” While the VFX branch may have deemed the effects as too supportive, Morrison perhaps fell prey to the confusion surrounding where cinematography ends and VFX begins.

Wakanda architect Hannah Beachler led the way as the first African-American nominated for production design, helping director Ryan Coogler achieve his vision of unity with her unique version of Afrofuturism. Marvel’s “Black Panther” is being called the X-factor in the Oscar craft races, and could dominate on Tuesday, grabbing somewhere between four and eight nominations. That’s primarily because of the imaginative and opulent depiction of African culture and black identity through Wakanda.
It’s world building at its finest, thanks to director Ryan Coogler’s social consciousness and detailed collaboration with production designer Hannah Beachler, costume designer Ruth Carter, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison. Together, they created a powerful force of Afrofuturism that elevated the McU.

Inclusion was the big winner at the L.A. Film Critics Association Awards, which was held Saturday night at the InterContinental in Century City.
“This year’s winners are the most diverse in Lafca’s 43-year history,” announced its president, Claudia Puig, adding that 14 out of their 18 awards were won by women and people of color. Ironically, however, the organization itself is comprised of “mostly old white men,” one member admitted to Variety. But Lafca is doing its part to change that for the future of film criticism: The first honoree of the night was a formerly homeless student from Los Angeles City College — and a current Wme intern — who called out the obvious “gender disparity” in the industry.
Unlike, say, at the Golden Globes where no female directors were even nominated, Lafca gave best director honors to self-described “social-realist filmmaker” Debra Granik, who helmed the independent movie “Leave No Trace.

Get ready to see a whole lot of Alfonso Cuaron at the Critics’ Choice Awards Sunday night. “Roma” is expected to top the ceremony with five wins, which would bring Cuaron to the stage all five times. The eight-time nominated film is favored in Best Picture, Best Director (Cuaron), Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography (Cuaron) and Best Editing (Cuaron and Adam Gough). (See Gold Derby’s racetrack odds.) So, yeah, Cuaron would have a literal handful of trophies by the end of the night.
“The Favourite” leads the field with 14 nominations, but it’s only predicted to score four awards in the 19 categories we’re predicting (there are 25 categories total): Best Original Screenplay (Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara), Best Film Ensemble, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. If it does win ensemble, “The Favourite” would be the first Critics’ Choice champ to not have a corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award nomination.

January 8 was a great day for “A Star is Born” and Bradley Cooper. The neophyte helmer was nominated twice by the Directors Guild of America. He contends for the both the big prize, Best Director, and for the first-time feature award. Earlier in the day, the sound mixing team for his film had reaped a bid with the Cinema Audio Society.
These nominations mean that his remake of the Hollywood classic keeps its perfect track record with the guild awards. It had already been cited by the actors, art directors, casting directors, cinematographers, film editors, producers and writers as one of the best of the year in their respective fields. Not surprisingly, “A Star is Born” is our frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

We’ve now heard from six of the guilds — actors, art directors, cinematographers, film editors, producers and writers — as well as the casting directors with their nominees for the best of the year in their respective fields.
Only one film — “A Star is Born” — has reaped bids from all seven precursor prizes. Not surprisingly, it is our frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars.
Six films – “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Roma” and “Vice” — have been cited by five precursors. All of these but “Crazy Rich Asians” number among our top 10 Best Picture contenders. But could we be underestimating this comedy blockbuster, which is currently in 14th place on our chart?
The current roster is rounded out by “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which are both in contention at four guilds as well as three-time contender “Mary Poppins Returns” and two-time nominee “If Beale Street Could Talk.

It was a busy morning for precursor awards today, wasn’t it? Not only are we still recovering from what went on at the Golden Globes last night, a quartet of important stepping stones to Oscar announced their nominees. The nominations came from the Ace Eddies (the Guild for film editors), the American Society of Cinematographers (the Guild for cinematography), the Art Directors Guild, and of course, the Writers Guild. The latter, as usual, had disqualified some high profile contenders, so that’s important to keep in mind, but the former three have given us a decent look at the likeliest Academy Award nominees in Best Production Design and Best Film Editing, respectively. The four precursors represented Guilds that actually correspond with Academy members, so keep that in mind. Ace Eddie and Adg separate into multiple categories, so that’s worth making note of, as well. Also, as you might imagine,...

Cinematographers love black-and-white movies. You can tell that by how often they’re nominated and win at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards, and by how often the cinematographers branch of the motion picture academy nominates black-and-white films. But when Oscar voters across all branches of the academy pick the winners they usually steer clear of monochromatic films and look for a splash of color. Will this year be an exception? “Roma” has been acclaimed for its black-and-white visuals by director and cinematographer Alfonso Cuaron, and the Expert journalists we’ve polled think it will prevail.
So just how cursed are black-and-white movies? Well, none have won Best Cinematography at the Oscars since “Schindler’s List” (1993) — that was a quarter century ago. You might argue that that’s just how it is since there are simply far more color movies produced these days, so you’re bound to have more color winners.
