Remember that time Mark Wahlberg said he could've stopped 9/11? He later apologized, but it seems the world-famous hamburger salesman likes to fantasize about being present for ripped-from-recent-headlines tragedies as a way of "honoring" the real people involved. In fact, he did this on no less than three occasions in the 2010s with director Peter Berg; first on the film "Lone Survivor" in 2013, and then twice in a single year with "Deepwater Horizon" and "Patriots Day" in 2016.
Of these three, "Deepwater Horizon" is probably the best, if only because it's devoid of the suspect political overtones of the other two. The film dramatizes the 2010 Deepwater Horizon semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit explosion and oil spill, pointing the finger of blame squarely at the corner-cutting Bp middle managers who ignored safety concerns raised by the rig's workers. With Wahlberg off playing action hero for most of the movie as Chief Electronics Technician Michael "Mike" Williams,...

The moment the WGA strike started at 12:01 a.m. on May 2, all late-night shows went dark. Many presume that the same is bound to happen with daytime dramas if SAG-AFTRA goes on strike July 1 (or later), as those series, similarly, are in continuous, year-round production.
However, SAG-AFTRA’s film and TV contract, which expires June 30, does not apply to SAG-AFTRA members working on soaps. It means those cast members will have to continue to work even if their guild goes on strike after the membership voted overwhelmingly for strike authorization ahead of SAG-AFTRA’s current negotiations with the the studios’ collective bargaining representative the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. And, with the four daytime dramas — The Young and the Restless (CBS), The Bold and the Beautiful (CBS), Days Of Our Lives (Peacock) and General Hospital (ABC) — continuing to churn out scripts amid the WGA strike using fi-core and other non-member writers,...

Does your memory go as far back as 2010, or have too many catastrophes and cataclysms blurred your vision? Peter Berg’s tense account of the Bp Gulf Oil Spill debacle covers twenty hours of technological peril, as Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell battle idiotic executives and a badly-cemented oil well that’s fixing to blow sky high — and to turn a massive floating oil rig into a hellish inferno.

I always like when an actor hooks up with the right filmmaker. Often, it can lead to great things. For Mark Wahlberg, teaming up with director Peter Berg a few years ago led to a fantastic film in Lone Survivor. Later this week, they pair up again for Deepwater Horizon, a movie that could well be of some note. Later on this year, they’ll be together again for a more overt awards player in Patriot’s Day, but that’s for another day. Tomorrow, we get their take on the famous oil spill tragedy, focusing on some of the heroism that went down on that day. It could be in line to become an under the radar hit, so watch out. The film is a look at the disaster in April of 2010 on an offshore oil rig. Called the Deepwater Horizon, as you might imagine, the rig would explode...

Six years ago, nightmare images of an oil rig burning at night in the Gulf Coast seared themselves into memory. The fire raged high and furious against a pitch-black landscape, leaving one to wonder just what had happened ... and who, if anyone, survived. Now comes Peter Berg's Deepwater Horizon, a dramatization of events in the hours leading up to the explosion that claimed 11 lives. Its direct source is a magazine article by David Rohde and Stephanie Saul; the screenplay is credited to Matthew Michael Carnahan (Berg's The Kingdom, and also Lions for Lambs and others) and Matthew Sand. In its early scenes, the movie feels very much like a staged reading of a magazine article, filled with a copious amount of information that...

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig stationed off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico caught on fire, leading to one of the worst ecological disasters and oil spills in U.S. waters. 11 men died during the fire, but a lot more survived as they tried to stop the spill before being evacuated.
Following their collaboration on 2013’s Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg and director Pete Berg have re-teamed for Deepwater Horizon, a recreation of the hours leading up to the fire and how engineer Mike Williams (played by Wahlberg) made sure that as much of his crew got off the rig safely as he could. Besides being an amazing recreation of the actual fire, the film also deals with some of the reasons why things might have gone wrong as Williams and the rig’s offshore installation manager “Mr. Jimmy” Harrell (Kurt Russell) butt heads with visiting Bp execs.

I’ve often thought that more filmmakers should sit and properly watch the first half of Alien. Ridley Scott’s masterpiece is rightly lauded for its tension, for its outstanding production design, and for its ability to genuinely creep under your skin. But one of the key reasons, for me, that it feels so special is that it does so much quality foundation work with its characters. That an extraordinary situation is made to feel ordinary, by a bunch of people moaning and grumbling about everyday things, rather than talking in philosophic soliloquies, as too many modern characters seem to do.

Immensely intense and suspenseful. Disaster filmmaking at its most gripping, yet there is nothing in the least bit exploitive or sensationalized about it. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Wait, what? “Based on a true story of real life heroes”? Wasn’t the Deepwater Horizon that total cluster-you-know-what of incompetence and corporate greed that killed 11 people and spilled an ungodly amount of oil all over the Gulf of Mexico, oil that is still killing seabirds and fish and cute baby dolphins to this day, six years later? Yes, it is. But this is not that story, at least not anymore than it can make some Bp executives look wolfish and blundering (which they well deserve). This movie doesn’t even get into the oil...

“Deepwater Horizon” ends with a list of 11 people who died aboard the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, but it spends nearly two hours beforehand focused on one survivor. Electronics expert Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) is the courageous figure at the center of this unsettling reenactment, directed by Peter Berg with a sharp eye for fiery details and the morbid suspense leading up to it, but fewer ideas to prop up the mayhem. As the bursting oil gives way to flames, Williams and gruff installation manager Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell on autopilot) squint and grunt their way through the shadowy structure in a hectic escape that forms the movie’s prolonged finale. Even though it takes nearly an hour to get there, the payoff is simplistic. “Deepwater Horizon” fixates on beginning of the infamous oil spill with the superficial intensity of a theme park ride. It...

Peter Berg’s doomed oil rig Deepwater Horizon plunges into the sea in explosive new poster for the director’s upcoming ensemble drama.
While the infamous Bp oil spill that ensued occupied international headlines for months – if not years – Berg’s high-profile picture circles back to those precious moments before the biggest man-made disaster in human history.
In spotlighting the brave men and women that experienced the event first-hand – not unlike Patriots Day, which also heralds a collaboration between Berg and Lone Survivor star Mark Wahlberg in 2016 – Deepwater Horizon features an all-star cast headlined by Wahlberg, Kate Hudson, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O’Brien, and Golden Globe-winner Gina Rodriguez. Matthew Michael Carnahan and Matthew Sand are the brains behind the screenplay, and it’ll be fascinating to see how the scribes build a compelling character drama around such a momentous event.

The first of two Peter Berg-directed, Mark Wahlberg-led films we’ll get within just a few months later this year, Deepwater Horizon depicts the harrowing explosion in April 2010, which killed 11 crewman. (The other is Patriots Day, depicting the Boston Marathon bombings, set for late December.) Today we have a new full-length trailer for the Bp oil spill drama ahead of a September release.
Selling the drama more as an action film — rather than the tone one might expect A Most Violent Year‘s J.C. Chandor would have come up with before dropping out — it might have commercial appeal, but we can’t say it’s among our most-anticipated of the fall. Also starring Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, Kate Hudson and Dylan O’Brien, check out the new trailer and poster below.

After engineering a taut and intimate war thriller three years ago with Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg are primed to reunite not once, but twice over the next twelve months for Boston Marathon thriller Patriots Day and Deepwater Horizon.
It’s the latter Wahlberg-Berg collaboration that will make shore first this September, documenting the calamitous Bp oil spill of 2010 that would go on to spawn a massive political, social and, most importantly, environmental debate that would span for years to come.
But much like Lone Survivor before it, Deepwater Horizon will place a laser focus on the heroes at the core of the story, and today’s series of grimy character posters for the action-thriller are designed to spotlight the “real life heroes” caught amidst the man-made disaster.

Bubbling to the surface mere hours after Lionsgate unveiled an early stream of photos, today heralds the release of the first Deepwater Horizon teaser trailer.
Placing a laser focus on the disastrous Bp oil spill of 2010, Peter Berg’s (Lone Survivor) environmental actioner thrusts Mark Wahlberg into the Gulf of Mexico where, unbeknownst to him, the crew of an American oil rig will be left facing the biggest man-made disaster in modern history.
But what today’s trailer does so well is introducing us to a time before the sea-floor oil gusher ruptured, expertly allowing an endearing family breakfast to run in parallel with action shots pulled from when the shit hits the fan. Breaking down the minutia of deep-sea drilling in layman’s terms, the opening involves Wahlberg’s blue-collar worker and his daughter using a Coke can – Independence Day, eat your heart out – to illustrate the process involved...

After directing Robert Redford in All is Lost, filmmaker J.C. Chandor was slated to return to sea with Deepwater Horizon, a film about the oil rig of the same name and the tragedy that followed after it exploded and unleashed massive amounts of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the second largest environmental disaster in the United States. However, The Wrap reports that Chandor has now been replaced by Peter Berg on the film that will star Mark Wahlberg, who last worked with the director on his military drama Lone Survivor. Reportedly, Chandor left the Lionsgate project due to creative differences. In addition, the trade reports Berg's Battleship star Liam Neeson and Michael Keaton are also being sought for roles in the film, but their specific characters have been revealed. Based on a New York Times article titled "Deepwater Horizon's Final Hour" by David Barstow, David Rohde,...

One of the most fascinating filmmaking voices of the moment, and certainly one of the most prolific, J.C. Chandor has been moving from project to project — "Margin Call," "All Is Lost," "A Most Violent Year" — shifting from one genre to the next with ease. He had been on track to get his biggest project yet going, "Deepwater Horizon" starring Mark Wahlberg, but the director's participation has sunk. Chandor has exited the movie over the standard "creative differences." Instead, Wahlberg's "Lone Survivor" bud Peter Berg has stepped in to help, and yeah, "creative differences" starts to make a whole lot of sense now. Penned by Matthew Sand and Matthew Carnahan, the film is based on the true events that occurred on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, and chronicles the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon and the extreme moments of bravery and survival...

J.C. Chandor is easily one of the most exciting directors working right now and the guy has only two films -- Margin Call, All is Lost -- under his belt. Just the mere range of his projects from his tackling of the Wall Street crisis to a nearly silent film featuring Robert Redford lost at sea, and his next film, A Most Violent Year, tackling 1981 New York's epidemic of violence has me begging to see it as soon as possible. Next up is Deepwater Horizon, a film based on the disaster surrounding the Gulf of Mexico explosion and subsequent oil spill based on David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul's New York Times piece detailing the rig's final hours. Just knowing Chandor's intimate way of filming makes the film a future top priority. Today the first bit of casting has been announced as Mark Wahlberg will star as the No.

Summit Entertainment is in negotiations with Ric Roman Waugh (Felon) to direct "Deepwater Horizon," the drama about the oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that caused a massive offshore oil spill that created what's considered to be the second largest Us environmental disaster. The new movie is based on the NY Times article called "Deepwater Horizon.s Final Hour" and will be adapted by Matthew Sand (Ninja Assassin). The drama will focus on the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig and the final minutes up to the disaster, and the attempt of more than 100 others to stay alive. The rig, which was owned and operated by Transocean and drilling for Bp in the Macondo Prospect oil field about 40 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast, blew up and the explosion killed 11 workers and injured 16 others.

Well, if they can make a found footage horror film about the Chernobyl disaster, why not launch a drama about the 2010 Bp oil spill? Deadline reports (via ComingSoon) that Summit Entertainment and Participant Media are currently negotiating with stuntman-turned-director Ric Roman Waugh to helm their film about the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, titled Deepwater Horizon, after the massive oil rig that first exploded and then caught fire while drilling on the Macondo Prospect oil field, located off the southeast Louisiana coast. The disaster on the Deepwater then kicked off the oil spill, which was the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, and is considered the second largest environmental disaster in U.S. history (behind the Dust Bowl). Sounds fun, right? At the very least, screenwriter Matthew Sand‘s script is based on some promising material, a 2010 article from “The New York Times,” titled “Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hour” that was...
