Update: American Idol alum Syesha Mercado and her partner Tyron Deener's 20-month-old son, Amen'Ra, returned home to be with his parents about seven months after he was taken away by child protective services and put in foster care amid allegations of "abuse and neglect," accusations the couple denied. On Oct. 1, Mercado shared on Instagram a video of Amen'Ra riding home with her and Deener and playing Peek-a-Boo and clapping inside the vehicle. "It's a great moment to have Ra physically back with us but it's not over with," Deener said. "We gotta deal with six months of supervision, of the state coming to our home every week for the next...

Former American Idol contestant Syesha Mercado is using her voice to fight for her children. Florida authorities took her newborn baby from her care last week, after removing her firstborn son in March because he was "suffering from severe malnutrition," an officer with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said in a statement to E! News on Aug. 13. Mercado denies the abuse and alleges racial discrimination, writing on her online fundraiser that son Amen'Ra and daughter Ast were "kidnapped" due to "corruption" and "injustice" within Child Protective Services. Over the past week, Mercado's custody battle has inspired a wave of...

American Idol alum Syesha Mercado has had another baby taken from her. The singer, 34, shared an hour-long Instagram video of sheriff's deputies forcing her to hand over her newborn daughter on the side of the road, even as Mercado told them her baby was still breastfeeding. "They Took Our Baby Again!," she captioned the Aug. 10 video. Mercado has explained on social media that she brought her firstborn son, Amen'Ra, to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., earlier this year. She took him in to get "extra fluids," because he was weaning from extended breast feeding to eating more solids. However, she said armed officers...

Now that American Idol is headlong into its "final" season (until the whole thing is rebooted as Idol Redux: America Strikes Back in 2022), I realize what I'll miss most about this white-bread karaoke pageant: the unbelievably awkward montages of Top 24 contestants dancing as Ryan Seacrest reads their names. Last night's Top 24 reveal didn't feature that classic sequence, which has been a mainstay of the series since the first few seasons. And that is a shame. Why? Because Idol is a dork circus and everyone deserves a chance to stand in the center ring and perform the pony for America's vote. In case you're unfamiliar with this gorgeous, ludicrously unflattering dance sequence, here is part of 2009's medley. Please watch in fear as Kris Allen goes full Caucasian with his startling "spank that ass" choreo. It's like he's foreshadowing the against-all-odds charisma that will win him the whole thing. Travel with...

Given all the musicals we've seen on TV recently -- NBC's live-performance versions of "Peter Pan" and "The Sound of Music," not to mention ABC's "Galavant" and all six seasons of Fox's "Glee" -- it's a wonder that the pipeline hasn't flowed in the opposite direction, from the small screen to Broadway.
That may change with the announcements that a couple of TV-based musicals are in the works. One is "Bombshell," the Marilyn Monroe biographical musical that was created and staged over the course of two seasons on NBC's "Smash." Bringing it to Broadway would seem easy enough -- the songs and choreography already exist; all that's needed is a book.
The other is a stage version of "Downton Abbey," which may launch after the British drama's sixth and final season wraps this winter. John Lunn, who composes the music for the series, says he envisions an international tour, starring...

It’s not just a sweet, sweet fantasy: They belong together. Yes indeed, after several days of intense speculation, Fox announced at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills Monday that Mariah Carey has officially signed on as an American Idol judge for the show’s upcoming 12th season.
“I am so excited to be joining Idol,” Carey shared via a phone call to Fox boss Kevin Reilly, just seconds after he shared the news with the TCA crowd. “I wanted to be there today and I wish I could have been there myself to tell you.

The ensemble for Bombshell, Smash‘s musical-within-a-show, is set to swell based on these casting calls for not one or two but three new series regulars being added for Season 2.
For starters, NBC’s musical drama is looking to cast the role of Courtney, an African-American chorus member in her mid- to late-20s who packs a powerhouse voice. She is described as “incredibly attractive and confident, but also open-minded and non-judgmental.” In keeping with the series’ “introduction” of American Idol finalist Kat McPhee as Karen, TVLine’s Michael Slezak suggests Idol alumni Syesha Mercado or Melinda Doolittle for this gig,...

For the Whitney Houston tribute at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks sang Whitney's biggest hit, "I Will Always Love You." So, let's find out - which "Idol" has done the iconic song the best?
Jennifer Hudson took on the big number for the 2012 Grammys tribute to Whitney, while "Idol" Season 11 finalist Jessica Sanchez performed it during Whitney Houston week on the show this year.
"Idol" third-place finisher Syesha Mercado performed the song during Season 7, while earlier in Season 11, Ashley Robles auditioned with "I Will Always Love You" in San Diego. Which lady do you think did it best?
All versions are embedded below except for Jordin Sparks, whose video we'll post just as soon as we have it. But for now, vote in our poll! (Is it total blasphemy that we actually think Sanchez has done the song best out of this group?)

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

'American Idol': Jessica Sanchez, Jennifer Hudson, Syesha Mercado, Ashley Robles - who sang it best?
Jessica Sanchez took on Whitney Houston's biggest song in "I Will Always Love You" for the "American Idol" Top 13 performance night Wednesday (March 7). But is she the best Idol who sang the song?
Obviously, Whitney Houston's version is the best ever and we shall not besmirch it by including it in our poll post. But what about the other Idols? Jennifer Hudson sang the song for the 2010 Bet Honors - we didn't include her 2012 Grammys version, since she was obviously fighting back tears and that's kind of unfair.
Syesha Mercado sang a kind of Whitney-Dolly hybrid of the song back during "Idol" Season 7, while Ashley Robles sang "I Will Always Love You" for the "Idol" Season 11 auditions in San Diego.
And of course, Jessica performed it for the Season 11 Top 13. But whose version did you like the best? Vote now!

The wife of a southern California preacher -- who says she was "sent by God" to provide spiritual and financial help to the show's contestants -- attended last month's Hollywood Week tapings to support the newest members of her flock. Over the past four seasons, Leesa Bellisi and her husband Denny have opened their two Los Angeles homes to the families of Jason Castro, Syesha Mercado and dozens of other hopefuls, while their kids sang for votes on TV's biggest reality show.

Opinions have been largely negative surrounding the ninth season of Fox's hit singing competition show -- but is this really the worst season in "American Idol" history? We don't think so.
We think this is more a case of the collective "Idol" viewing audience having some short-term memory loss. Sure, in comparison to the David vs. David showdown of two years ago and the spectacle that was Adam Lambert coupled with whiskey-voiced Allison Iraheta and cutie-pie Kris Allen, Season 9 seemed a little boring.
But let's not forget the seasons prior to seven and eight. Do you even remember the black hole that was Season 3?
Season 9's Paige Miles is arguably the best 11th-place finisher ever, with the possible exception of Alexis Grace. Unfortunately for Paige, the week she was eliminated she was very obviously sick and had had no exposure prior to the Top 24, thus no fan base to get her through the rough patch.

Lee Dewyze tells Zap2it of making the "American Idol" Top 12 that "it's really overwhelming ... 'American Idol' has helped so many artists and musicians get to where they need to be."
When asked if we'll see the guitar most weeks, Lee says it all depends on how he's feeling that particular morning.
But Lee does tease, "Maybe the piano ... I dabble on the piano, I was thinking about breaking that out a little bit later."
Lee also couldn't pick a dream theme for himself. "I've been so focused on getting to this point," says Lee. "It's like I'm here and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to kill it any week I'm in there. One week at a time."

Does she feel extra pressure, being so young and having to juggle school in addition to "Idol?"
"I think it just shows that I can multi-task," Katie laughs. "It's just preparing me for what's to come. I know these next few weeks are going to be very tough, so being able to multi-task and take on so much is just going to be prepare me in the end."
Katie gave Zap2it perhaps the second-best answer to the "dream theme" question (after Andrew Garcia's "TV show theme song" answer).
"I want them to do a Disney theme week," says Katie. "Me being so young, I grew up with Disney movies ... I think it'd be fun to see everybody out of their element."

She also says that she's feeling good, she's healthy and she's just grateful to be there.
When asked if she'll ever lose the guitar and really surprise us, Crystal says, "I don't know if the guitar's gonna go away, but it might be something out of the box. And if I tell you, it wouldn't be a surprise, so... shhh."

First it was "American Idol" for Todrick Hall. Now he has his sights set on "Glee."
On going out the week he does well:
I feel like I should've done that a couple weeks earlier. As you can tell, I'm an African-American male. A lot of people were telling me to sing Usher, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Stevie Wonder but that's not the kind of music I want to sing. I sadly feel that if I had just sang the cookie-cutter songs that people wanted me to do, if I had just been a normal guy, I feel like I would've done better. But I'm happy I stayed true to myself.
On his "Wizard of Oz" scandal:
I'm so glad I can about that now. I do want everybody to know I'm not a scam artist, I'm a nice person. I'm just an ambitious kid who got wrapped up with a...

Katelyn Epperly talks about her favorite "American Idol" moment, rooting for Crystal to go all the way and how this is only the beginning for her career.
On her most memorable "Idol" moment:
Playing "The Scientist" with that white piano. I'm definitely in my element when I'm just sitting behind the keys without a band, just super raw and intimate. I definitely had my own personal moment while I sang that song ... Without going into anything too specific, it's definitely a song that comes to mind when I think about anything hard I've had to deal with. Any sort of loss. It's a song that is sad but also hopeful. I wanted to do it slow, I wanted to focus on the lyrics. The song just cries and I wanted to portray that and I think I did, despite what the judges might have said.

Alex Lambert was caught completely off-guard when he was eliminated from "American Idol." He talks about his shock, overcoming his nerves and how much he'll miss Siobhan Magnus.
On his surprising elimination:
It was emotional because a lot of people weren't expecting the people who went home to go home. There's people in the Top 12 that everyone thought were going home. People were telling me I had no reason to be nervous ... I wasn't expecting to go home. It was such a shock. The four people that went home, nobody thought they were going home. They were four other people, probably six other people who people thought would go home before us four.
On being so nervous and inexperienced:
Every time I got up there I couldn't even sing my best because I was so nervous. I have a whole 'nother series of songs that I can sing that sound...

Eliminated "American Idol" contestant Lilly Scott has some frank things to say about her surprising elimination and not getting to be as indie on the show as she would've liked.
On her elimination:
I definitely have no regrets, but watching certain people make the Top 12 who had not done so well on the past three weeks and then going off the judges' comments on my three songs the past three weeks, I was frustrated. My fan base wasn't there even though the producers and judges seemed to love me and I felt like I was having a great run on the show.
Then again, my voting demographic probably doesn't even own a TV and if they do, they're out riding their bike or doing something more productive than watching TV, let alone "American Idol." I guess they just weren't voting ... I definitely think I got cut early. I knew I...

Siobhan Magnus talks to Zap2it about making the Top 12, her dream theme and what her different tattoos mean.
Siobhan says of her making the Top 12, "It's amazing. I'm kind of stunned. I don't really know how to feel. It's so much, all at once."
And what about the eliminations Thursday night (March 11), which looked incredibly emotional for everyone. "It's always surprising. At this point everyone is so talented that you don't want to see any of them go."
One tattoo is from the cover of an Edward Gorey book, one is from the band Hanson, one is from the band Hole and the last one is Eye of Horus, an Egyptian symbol of protection.
We of course had to look up the Edward Gorey book -- it's "The GashlyCrumb Tinies." (And not, as Siobhan told us off-camera, a tattoo of Mary Poppins.)
Siobhan's dream theme would be something along...

"American Idol" finalist Tim Urban is excited to be part of the Top 12. Probably because at first it looked like judge Simon Cowell thought asking Tim back might have been a mistake.
Tim is just happy to be here, though. He tells Zap2it that making the Top 12 is "very overwhelming, but such a good feeling."
The final four eliminations came as a bit of a surprise to fans of the show, but did they surprise Tim? "The Top 24 that came here was so talented. Everybody was so good. Every week you really have no idea who's going home and who's going to stay," says Tim. "So yes, it was shocking because I've seen these people, I know they're so good. It's hard every week to see people go."
We asked Tim what his "dream theme" would be now that the Top 12 is starting the theme weeks. Tim surprised us when he said,...

Two years off her "American Idol" journey, Syesha Mercado is playing the glamorous Deena Jones in "Dreamgirls" and working on her debut album.
Deena Jones is the "Dreamgirls" role played by music superstar Beyonce, which must be some pretty big shoes to fill for Syesha.
"It was a little scary at first when I started thinking like that. It's a lot of pressure," Syesha tells Zap2it. "But once rehearsals started I just tried my best to focus on who Deena Jones was and playing it as honestly as I could. I definitely pay homage to Beyonce, but at the same time I can only do what I can do."
The "Dreamgirls" schedule is keeping Syesha busy with performances every night in Los Angeles. But being back in L.A. is a nice change from being out on the road. "I'm actually settled in now. I have furniture, I have a bedroom.

On Wednesday (March 3), following the seemingly umpteenth performance of Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be" on "American Idol," the MTV Newsroom Blog declared a handful of songs officially retired.
However, a pair of contestants decided to immediately ignore that advice on Wednesday night's episode. Haeley Vaughn took a stab at Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" (which could get her sent home this week) while Lilly Scott brought Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" back around again (it was a not entirely unreasonable performance, but nothing special either).
The "American Idol" contestants obviously don't listen to reasonable ideas, but that won't stop us from suggesting another five tunes that need to be buried deep within the "American Idol" song crypt.
"Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me"

We finally caught up with the Off Broadway hit Circle Mirror Transformation (pictured at left) and boy are we glad that we did. Ditto for the reinvention of the David Lean movie Brief Encounter that wraps up this weekend at Brooklyn's St. Ann's Warehouse. (We're particularly excited about The Pee-Wee Herman Show in L.A. -- you can read more about the plans for the production in the profile of Paul Reubens in this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly.) Usually, when you quit a job, you pack your bobbleheads into a box and try to slip out the door as quietly as possible. But when your name is Simon Cowell and you're quitting America's most popular TV show, slipping out is not an option.
Reaction to Cowell's announcement on Monday that he was leaving "American Idol" after this season has created a Twitterstorm of comments from his co-stars and former "Idol" contestants. Just moments after the announcement on the eve of season nine's debut, host Ryan Seacrest tweeted, "This is Simon's last season on 'Idol.' He's working on U.S. version of 'X Factor'! He is one of the most brilliant people in our biz! Congrats."

In December, David Cromer's production of the Off Broadway play Our Town (pictured at left) became the longest running version of the show ever, so we here at EW urge you to take a look at our just-posted review of the production—and consider heading to downtown NYC to give it a gander. It's worth it, as EW's Tanner Stransky gave the production an A- and called it "incredibly moving." Because of the recent holidays, few new shows have been opening on the boards in NYC. But if you're looking for some live theater, check out the EW.com...

With the holiday season upon us, new stage openings are sparse. What's worse, audiences have been sparse at several of this season's new shows. This week brought closing notices for two well-reviewed revivals, Finian's Rainbow (final performance Jan. 17) and Ragtime (pictured at left; final show Jan. 10). On the other hand, we received casting news on some upcoming productions (The Hangover's Justin Bartha in for T.R. Knight in the Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor) -- as well as word that Martin Sheen will return to the stage in February (at L.A.'s Mark Taper Forum) in a...

The past week saw the opening of two new shows in New York City. The first is a new play from David Mamet, Race, which EW critic Lisa Schwarzbaum awarded a C grade and called "a four-person dramatic tap dance about the lies blacks and whites tell each other about each other." The other—without a doubt, much lighter fare—is a lost backstage play called So Help Me God starring Kristen Johnston that EW's Jessica Shaw gave a B, commenting that "Johnston seems to relish every second" of her time on stage, "strutting around the stage in diva-worthy capes and lacy gowns,...

It was a busy week on the boards. Sunday saw the opening of a Broadway revival of the musical Ragtime (pictured right), which EW's Melissa Rose Bernardo calls "dazzling" and gives an A.
