Admittedly, it’s strange to start a review with a list of complaints, but the new thriller “Every Breath You Take,” directed by Vaughn Stein, written by David Murray, and starring Casey Affleck, just begs for it. Much like how Affleck’s psychiatrist character deals with his patients, it is fitting to address the obvious issues with this film in a series of bullet points:
From a technical standpoint, the film is underlit and over-edited.

To celebrate the release of Every Breath You Take, which is out now in US cinemas and on demand, we had the pleasure of speaking to star Michelle Monaghan about the thriller.
A searing psychological thriller from director Vaughn Stein (Terminal), Every Breath You Take tells the story of a psychiatrist (Casey Affleck), whose career is thrown into jeopardy when his patient takes her own life. When he invites his patient’s surviving brother (Sam Claflin) into his home to meet his wife (Michelle Monaghan) and daughter (India Eisley), his family life is suddenly torn apart.
After years in development hell, the film finally got a greenlight after singing its cast and Monaghan tells us about the lure of the story and the family dynamics at play in the film, re-teaming with Casey Affleck after Gone Baby Gone, Sam Claflin’s dark role and why the role is different to others she has played before.

Photo: ‘Every Breath You Take’/Vertical Entertainment Slow And Steady Doesn’t Always Win The Race ‘Every Breath You Take’ is the latest film by director Vaughn Stein, director of ‘The Terminal’ starring Margot Robbie. The film follows Casey Affleck as a psychiatrist whose patient commits suicide. After introducing the patient's grieving brother, played by Sam Claflin, to his wife and daughter, Michelle Monaghan and India Eisley respectively, their family begins to unravel. ‘Every Breath You Take’ is an interesting concept but unfortunately feels very uninteresting in its execution. There are many things to like in the film, but at times it feels like a marathon through moments that don’t work to get to the moments that do. Don’t Hold Your Breath: Stein Strains Plausibility in B Thriller
Unfolding with all the believability of a science fiction film set in a parallel universe, Vaughn Stein attempts a throwback to the contemporary adult thrillers of the late 80s and early 90s with Every Breath You Take. Vaughn’s third feature, while moderately better attenuated than scrappy previous efforts such as Terminal (2018) and 2020’s Inheritance (read/watch review), wastes a handsome cast (and evocative title) in an exercise which isn’t risible enough to secure camp devotees nor ultimately interesting enough to suggest the inherent classist and racial subtexts underlining the specific catalogue which inspired it.…...

One day, after rushing from her sugar daddy to her neurotic parents’ family shiva, she is given the third degree by various estranged relatives about her appearance and lack of post-grad plans. In “Every Breath You Take,” Casey Affleck plays a psychiatrist — or more to the point, he plays a movie psychiatrist, the sort of character who’s been around since Ingrid Bergman peered through wire-rimmed spectacles, offering repressed pensées about repression in Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” (1945). The movie psychiatrist may, at times, bear a passing resemblance to the real thing, but mostly he’s a creature unto himself: impeccably dry and detached, scribbling great gobs of notes and — inevitably — dealing with a secret closetful of his own issues.
Handsome in a trim beard and designer glasses, his voice tuned to a note of becalmed empathy, he convinces us that Dr. Philip Clark, a therapist who works out of his home in the Pacific Northwest, isn’t a bad guy, but that he has messed up his life just enough to deserve a comeuppance. Or at least a major correction.

"My husband and I have a very different way of dealing with things." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a dramatic thriller called Every Breath You Take, the latest film made by British filmmaker Vaughn Stein (of Terminal and Inheritance). A psychiatrist, whose client commits suicide, finds his family life disrupted after introducing her surviving brother to his wife and daughter. This intense psychological thriller seems to have some tricks up its sleeve, and there seems to be more secrets hiding behind everyone involved in this. Every Breath You Take features Casey Affleck, Sam Claflin, Michelle Monaghan, Veronica Ferres, and India Eisley. This looks quite slick and I enjoy every one of these actors, I'm very intrigued by this even though it all seems a bit cliche. I might still give this a look when it's out. Who else...? Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Vaughn Stein's Every Breath You Take,...

Sky plans to broadcast one new film a week from 2022.
UK pay-tv broadcaster Sky is to launch 30 new Sky Original films this year and will increase this to one a week from 2022 in a bid to become “the best home cinema service in the world”.
It represents a major push into film for the UK pay-tv operator, taking on streaming giants Netflix and Amazon as well as Disney, whose channels were removed from Sky last October following the launch of Disney+.
The plan to launch one original film per week from next year echoes a similar commitment made by Netflix earlier this month.

Can a bad twist ruin a good movie? Can a good twist save a flawed film? Are both possible? These are the sorts of things that run through your head when watching a flick that’s overly reliant on a third act surprise. Inheritance, out today, certainly thinks it’s being more clever than it actually is, but it’s a case where that poor choice doesn’t torpedo the whole thing. A chillingly ominous vibe and a standout turn by Simon Pegg, acting very much against type, helps to make this one worth your time. Plus, if the twist manages to surprise you? All the better. The film is a mystery and a thriller, wrapped up in a bit of melodrama, to boot. Lauren Monroe (Lily Collins) is an ambitious young District Attorney in New York. The daughter of the wealthy and powerful Archer Monroe (Patrick Warburton), Lauren has...

Traditionally, the long Memorial Day weekend is the territory where Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies — or else massive tentpoles such as “Mission: Impossible” and “Aladdin” — plant the stake for a blockbuster summer season. But there’s nothing traditional about the release schedule this year. With the coronavirus pandemic still posing a public health threat, Hollywood studios are holding their big offerings for a future date. But there are still a few big-budget movies to watch — including “The Lovebirds” and Mary J. Blige’s “Body Cam” — and no shortage of smaller streaming titles. Here are the week’s new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.

After seeing his work on 2018’s Terminal, this writer jumped at the opportunity to speak with filmmaker Vaughn Stein about his latest project, Inheritance, a dramatic thriller centered around the Monroe dynasty—a wealthy family whose influence in politics and legacy in New York is built upon a foundation of lies. Those lies begin to threaten their very existences after the patriarch of their clan (Patrick Warburton) passes away suddenly, leaving his daughter Lauren (Lily Collins) to clean up the mess before they lose everything they’ve all worked so hard for over the years.
Written by Matthew Kennedy, Inheritance also stars Connie Nielsen, Chace Crawford, and Simon Pegg (who turns in an exemplary performance here unlike anything we’ve ever seen from him before). Simon Pegg savors the rare opportunities he gets to play against type, something he’s done twice now in 2020. Known for his comedic and genre work, the English actor is keenly aware of how he’s perceived in the entertainment industry, but even though he shares the frustration that most compartmentalized actors feel, Pegg still goes above and beyond to show that he’s capable of darker and more dramatic roles, which his latest character’s “prison yard physique” proves in Vaughn Stein’s Inheritance. In his second collaboration with Stein, Pegg plays an enigmatic prisoner named Morgan who’...

Sins of the Father: Stein Mines Elitism in Absurd Melodrama
“Does any daughter every really know her father?” is one of several wilting lines of dialogue in Inheritance which could have served as a double-sided tagline. The sophomore feature from director Vaughn Stein written by first time scribe Matthew Kennedy is a soap opera balanced on the troubled dynasty of wealthy family, whose demise seems imminent after the unexpected death of a tyrannical patriarch.
An interesting array of notable names, several of whom are glaringly miscast, enhances the campy qualities of this over-baked yarn which features a few too many turns of the screw which are neither surprising nor compelling.…...

One adjective you don’t hear much anymore is “preposterous,” defined as “contrary to nature, reason or common sense.” Yet the word applies perfectly to Inheritance, a blithering botch job of a thriller that begs the question: “Come on, are you fucking kidding me?”
The plot, such as it is, involves the last will and testament of Archer Monroe (Patrick Warburton, a.k.a. Seinfeld‘s immortal Puddy), the patriarch of a New York financial dynasty who leaves the bulk of his fortune to his devoted widow Catherine (Connie Nielsen...

Discovering a man held captive in a bunker for 30 years should be more compelling than it proves in “Inheritance.” This overlong tale spends most of its nearly two hours as a somewhat draggy, talky mystery before finally deciding to be a thriller, with credibility lacking throughout. Questionable lead casting further undermines this second directorial feature for Brit Vaughn Stein, which is an improvement on his first — the terribly arch, self-penned neo-noir “Terminal” — but doesn’t find terra much more firma in Matthew Kennedy’s tepid potboiler of a script. The U.S. production launches on home-turf streaming platforms May 22, having debuted on DirectTV in April after its coronavirus-canceled Tribeca Film Festival premiere fell through.
A hyperbolic opening edited too much like a trailer shows tycoon Archer Monroe (Patrick Warburton) staggering to an apparent heart-attack death. Afterward we meet the rest of his family, now gathered for the funeral at their aristocratic “summer house” estate.

For every good choice in Vaughn Stein’s sophomore effort — the director previously helmed the Margot Robbie-starring curiosity “Terminal” — there are at least three more that fall flat, victims of obvious plotting, silly tropes, and shoddy character building. A mostly predictable thriller, “Inheritance” , but patient audiences might be rewarded by its occasionally unnerving final act. Strong work from star Lily Collins, who manages to ride out the film’s oddest missteps, helps, though co-star Simon Pegg is less successful at the big swings required of his character.
The film’s frantic opening goes to great pains to enforce two major plot points: rising district attorney Lauren Monroe (Collins) is driven by her desire to help victims, but her wealthy family isn’t nearly as compelled to look out for the little guy. Lauren is in the midst of literally delivering the key points of her ethos (she’ll never...

Simple questions rarely have simple answers. Take the one that’s posed to Lauren Monroe (Lily Collins) upon the death of her father Archer (Patrick Warburton): Are you loyal to your family or justice? Most would probably say both since they have it in their minds that their family is on justice’s side. Despite her desire to be one, however, Lauren isn’t that person. She partly worked to become District Attorney precisely because her family’s name was more aligned with money and murky morality than lawful practices. Archer unsurprisingly scoffed when she chose to go into civil law, knowing her considerable talents would better suit his interests in the private sector defending his friends. So now he’s posthumously supplying her one last chance to select family instead.

Plot: After the death of her powerful father, a young Da discovers that he kept a very dangerous secret, one that could destroy their family fortune and prominence. A thriller that wants to be more than that and stretches the bounds of plausibility to get there, “Inheritance” may have you squirming in your seat and shaking your head in equal measure.
The setup has a certain amount of promise, maybe: Imagine the family from “Succession” living in the house from “Parasite,” complete with a guy trapped in the basement. But then forget about comparisons to those estimable projects, because “Inheritance” is really just a clunky potboiler that uses fancy settings to distract from the contrivances on which it is built.
The film from director Vaughn Stein (“Terminal”) was due to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and to receive a theatrical release, but it instead debuted on DirecTV on goes demand on May 22, where the presence of Lily Collins, Chace Crawford and Simon Pegg may account for a modicum of interest.

Dolphin Entertainment has acquired the rights to “Special Delivery,” an original screenplay written by Brian Hurwitz, and has attached Vaughn Stein to direct.
The pic tells the story of Jess, whose world comes crashing down around her when she aggressively rebuffs a member of a powerful crime family. Her only chance at survival is to drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and deliver a mysterious package to a notorious gambler by midnight that day. It proves to be a task easier said than done, as she’s chased by two different men, each motivated by greed and revenge. Faced with incredible challenges and unlikely obstacles, the unknown contents of that package bring Jess face-to-face with her worst personal nightmare.
Emerson Davis, Dolphin’s vice president of development and production, is handling development of the project and will oversee production.
“’Special Delivery’ is an extremely fast-paced, ticking-clock thriller,” said Davis.

"I know things I'll take to the grave." Vertical Entertainment has released the official trailer for an indie thriller titled Inheritance, the latest from filmmaker Vaughn Stein. This was originally set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this year until the fest was called off. A patriarch of a wealthy and powerful family suddenly passes away, leaving his wife and daughter with a shocking secret inheritance that threatens to unravel and destroy their lives. His daughter Lauren receives a flash drive and keys, which lead her to find a man locked up inside the basement of her family's estate. Lily Collins stars as Lauren, with Simon Pegg as the guy in the basement, and a cast including Connie Nielsen, Chace Crawford, Michael Beach, and Patrick Warburton. This looks rather creepy, but seems like a predictable twist with who this guy is. Here's the first official trailer for Vaughn Stein's Inheritance,...

You have no idea how happy I am to see a new trailer pop up today. Lily Collins takes the lead in the first trailer for Inheritance and it looks like she inherits much more than she bargained for. The film, helmed by Vaughn Stein, from a screenplay by Matthew Kennedy, stars Collins who is left an envelope when the patriarch of her wealthy and powerful political family passes away. The contents of the envelope contain directions to a cabin where she finds an imprisoned man. From there, doors are…...

Realistically, one of two things can happen when you’re presented with a key that unlocks a secret lair on your family’s land after the death of your father. Either your dad was secretly Batman and he’s passing on his legacy to you, or he’s probably hiding a mysterious man down there that has been captive for a long time and holds the secrets to your whole family’s history. In “Inheritance,” it’s option two.
