Comedy Central may not quite be the cable-channel equivalent of a dude adjusting his junk in the way that, say, Spike TV is, but it’s still generally pretty bro-centric. This is, after all, the same institution that brought us The Man Show and helped convince every college-age guy resting his Oakleys on the brim of a baseball cap to yell “I’m Rick James, bitch!” at any available moment.
That’s what makes Amy Schumer’s success all the more impressive: While you might expect the “ironic Patrick Bateman” stylings of her fellow showrunner (and ex-boyfriend) Anthony Jeselnik to...

FrightFest and Movie Mogul, in association with Horror Channel, challenged aspiring filmmakers all over the country to make a short horror film, but 666 Short Cuts To Hell was no ordinary film competition. Entrants had to follow a series of ‘killer’ restraints such as a maximum of 6 lines of dialogue, a maximum of 6 cast and crew members and a maximum budget of £666.
A staggering 157 entries made the grade and the overall winner will be announced at FrightFest 2013 on Sunday Aug 25 after the screening of all six films. On hand to congratulate all six finalists will be the distinguished judging panel; Horror Channel presenter Emily Booth, FrightFest director Paul McEvoy, Movie Mogul’s John Shackleton, Filmmaker Paul Hyett and journalist Rosie Fletcher. Tom Six is planning to attend subject to his commitments on Human Centipede 3.

An hour with music producer Pharrell Williams at Jungle City Studios, up above the High Line and a wide array of new construction, feels like a minor form of time travel: He can connect an mp3 player to the console, turn the monitors up to jaw-rattling volumes, and play you pop music from the near future. These are the tracks he’s written for (or co-written with) various singers, beats he’s made for various rappers, a selection of sounds he’s crafted that could become radio fodder over the coming months. When we meet, he’s making adjustments to “Atm Jam,” a track for Azealia Banks’s upcoming album, and there’s plenty more of his work to follow. A tough-as-nails Jennifer Hudson song with a Rick James feel. A not-dissimilar piece for Miley Cyrus. A cut for Mayer Hawthorne that would sound like seventies smooth-rock kings Steely Dan...

Earlier this month we published a list of 20 cover songs that became more famous than the originals. From Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" to Sinead O'Connor's breathy remake of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U," the list scanned some of the best renditions in music history.
There's another realm of cover songs we didn't include in the last post, however, which is where our list of unexpected covers comes in. We've put together the strangest and most unpredictable song selections of artists like Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Dusty Springfield. Scroll through the list below and let us know your thoughts on the world of reimagined tunes in the comments.
1. "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (original by Nine Inch Nails)
"Hurt" was written by industrial rock icon Trent Reznor for Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album, "The Downward Spiral." Eight years later, Johnny Cash covered the song and his...

How much do recording artists care if music industry lawyers are allowed to see the amount of money they make from digital downloads? In 2011, a proposed class action lawsuit was launched against Universal Music Group over digital income. The litigation from Rob Zombie and Rick James on behalf of themselves and others under the Umg umbrella seeks substantial damages from the record label's decision to treat income from downloads off of venues like Apple's iTunes as "sales" instead of "licenses." Just how much money is at stake is an open question. The lawyers representing the plaintiffs want Umg

Rob Zombie is back behind the camera for his first feature since 2009's "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto," and if early word is anything to go by, his intensity and ability to scare hasn't weakened one bit. When we caught it at Tiff we said in our review that it's "compelling as it is because it’s driven by a creeping...sense of atmospheric dread." And while the soundtrack for his trippy witch movie will undoubtedly help that tone...it will also be funky.... Alongside the score cuts by John 5 & Griffin Boyce, there's Manfred Mann's "Blinded By The Light" and Rick James' "Give It To Me Baby" providing some FM flavor. And going further back, two classic cuts by The Velvet Underground. And if you need to get your prog rock on, Rush's seminal "Spirit Of The Radio" is here too. "The Lords Of Salem" soundtrack arrives on April 16th,...

The Grammy Awards red carpet is absolutely unpredictable, which, of course, makes it the most fun of award shows! While I love actresses to look like movie stars, I think being a musician gives you leeway to dress any way you like. So here are some fun 'styling mash-ups' that serve as inspiration for how I'd like to see some of the ladies look on Grammy evening—or hey, just some great ideas for your next Halloween! Beyoncé: The star would look best with the glitz and glam of Linda Evans circa Dynasty crossed with the smoldering heat from Rita Hayworth in Gilda and then funk it up with a touch of Rick James. Pink: Harness the raw sexual energy of Sharon Stone in Basic...

Beyonce has given a glimpse into her life, admitting she listens to 'Make Love To Me' by Rick James before heading to bed with Jay-z. The 31-year-old singer spoke in a behind the scenes video of her sizzling photo shoot with GQ magazine, opening up on her life in the spotlight and the music that puts her in the mood for lovemaking. She said: 'If I'm scared, be scared, allow it, release it, move on. I think I need to go listen to 'Make Love to Me' and make love to my husband.' The couple have been married since 2008, and in January 2012 Beyonce gave birth to their daughter Blue Ivy Carter, their first child...

This week's Criminal Minds featured few more misdirections than what we're used to seeing.
In the opening scene of "The Apprenticeship," I fully expected to see the teenager (Toby) become victim number-one, as he got off of the bus in a bad section of town. Then, when he revealed himself to the hooker as a virgin, and we see that someone's watching them, I thought for sure that was it for them both. Never thought for a moment he would prove to be the first UnSub.
It always seems weird how the team is able to pull all of the pieces together so quickly. Here, they quickly determined that it was a two-person UnSub unit, that one was teaching the other and they even got their relative ages down correctly.
Still, there's only an hour to get the story told - plus get a baseball game in - so I guess we just have to,...

Neil Young Waging Heavy Peace: A Hippie Dream (Blue Rider/Penguin)
If you want a (mostly) chronologically structured and exhaustively detailed biography of Neil Young, you want Jimmy McDonough's Shakey, a nearly 800-page tome published in 2002. If you want the full flavor of Young's mind and obsessions and thought patterns, full of quirky insights -- and what fan doesn't? – you will be unable to resist Waging Heavy Peace. Though either flawed or willfully eccentric, depending on one's perspective, it's mostly a compelling read.
I have a sneaking suspicion that part of the reason this book is non-chronologically structured and doesn't cover all of Young's career is that he read Dylan's Chronicles, Volume One, which does the same thing. But Chronicles is far more tautly structured and thorough in what it does cover. Young just rambles and free-associates.
Perhaps that's not as influenced by Dylan as by the haphazard birth of this memoir,...

It's time for "The Voice" Season 3 contestants to "do it live," as Bill O'Reilly might say, and viewers will find out who's up for the challenge.
For the first night of live performances, Adam Levine says the judges are "looking to be blown away," as always, and we'll see his Top 5 and Blake Shelton's Top 5 perform before the audience takes control. Three artists will move on from each team, thanks to audience votes, and the coadges will each save one more contestant on Thursday night's results show.
Cee Lo is dressed for the occasion, donning a Seinfeld-dreaded puffy shirt and A.C. Slater's overgrown jheri curl hair.
First up is a group performance with both Team Blake and Team Adam taking on Boston's "Peace of Mind," clad in black and gold. Then, it's onto the individuals. First up is ...

Oh boy, where do we even start with Kanye West? The man is a walking phenomenon, leaving in his wake controversy, Grammys, and millions of dollars he probably uses to wipe himself with. It doesn’t matter if he interrupts Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech or pisses of PETA with a line in one of his raps, because no matter what the man does, his music speaks for itself. Whether he’s working the boards or the mic, ‘Ye knows how to make music, plain and simple.
