A new film industry superclass is emerging in Spain: movies powered or co-backed by its streaming giants.
Perhaps the biggest example, Netflix Spain’s Andes flight disaster “Society of the Snow,” scored two Academy Award nominations last month.
Now, in the run-up to Berlin, London-based Film Constellation has acquired most world sales rights to “The Captive,” from Oscar winner Alejandro Amenábar (“The Sea Inside”) and Mod Producciones, a $15 million period adventure epic on the literary makings of “Quixote”author Miguel de Cervantes, held to ransom in a Moorish corsair jail.
Film Factory Ent. will take to market Iciar Bollain’s “I Am Nevenka,” about a feminist pioneer in Spain, and an untitled project from “Prison 77’s” Alberto Rodriguez, two fruit of the first movie slate from Movistar Plus+, the biggest Spanish pay TV/SVOD player, announced in January.
Spanish movies overperform on Netflix and Movistar Plus+. As of Feb.

Buenos Aires — “Wild Tales” and “The Clan” sales agent Film Factory Ent has swooped on “The Blue Star” (“La Estrella Azul“), a fiction film inspired by the life of Spanish musician Mauricio Aznar, a fundamental and endearing figure on Spain’s 1990s rock scene.
The film also marks one of the most anticipated feature debuts of the year in Spain, Javier Macipe having carved out a reputation through his shorts, two of which – 2014’s “Children of the River” and 2019’s “Gastos incluídos” – scored Spanish Academy Goya nominations. Macipe was chosen last year as one of Variety’s 10 Spanish talents to track.
“I am very happy to once more board a project from Mod Producciones and Cimarrón,” said Film Factory head Vicente Canales. “Javier Macipe is one of Spanish cinema’s new talents. We are convinced that this musical journey turning on the recognised artist Mauricio Aznar will captivate the international market.

Italian composer, famous for his Spaghetti Western scores, honoured for his work on The Best Offer.
Ennio Morricone is one of the first six winners announced by the European Film Academy who will be honoured at this year’s 26th European Film Awards.
The 84-year-old Italian composer, best known for his scores to Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns such as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, has been recognised by Efa for his work on Giuseppe Tornatore’s The Best Offer.
The jury praised Morricone for “proving once again his extraordinary capacity of always renewing his style while remaining faithful to the style of the director and the film – a universal composer, indeed, and a true master.”
A seven-member jury convened in Berlin and, based on the Efa Selection list, decided on the winners in the categories cinematography, editing, production design, costume design, composer and sound design.

MADRID -- Spain's leading film production house, Sogecine, has quietly let three of its top international executives leave in recent months amid rumors of a possible halt in production activity. The studio has been a powerful force in the Spanish film industry's internationalization over the past decade, so the developments raise questions about what the moves may mean for the Spanish industry as a whole.
For many, Fernando Bovaira, Gustavo Ferrada and Simon de Santiago's departures mark the end of an era.
Sogecine's parent company, television titan Sogecable, maintains that there has been no official policy change and that the company intends to continue production, despite the fact that resources are being channeled into the group's free-to-air TV channel Cuatro.
"Events change things", Sogecable spokesman Javier Garcia said. "Now we have a TV channel that requires resources and it relegates film to the back burner."
According to Garcia, Sogecine will continue its investment in local cinema in accordance with Spanish legislation that requires broadcasters to commit 5% of overall revenues to film production.
Only two films -- Jose Luis Cuerda's Los girasoles ciegos and Mateo Gil's Pedro Paramo, starring Gael Garcia Bernal -- have managed to hang on to their slot in the production lineup at the studio, which has cleared the rest of its slate.
