The Hunting Ground
Written & Directed by Kirby Dick
USA, 2015
“Sexual assault has always been a part of the college experience,” laments a university administrator in Kirby Dick’s troubling documentary, The Hunting Ground. Unfortunately, this grim pronouncement is borne out by the statistics, which state that 20% of all female students will be assaulted during their college tenure. Through powerful interviews and a barrage of sobering data, Kirby exposes the epidemic of sexual abuse on campus, as well as the systemic efforts to cover it up. It’s a harrowing story about survivors reclaiming their sense of empowerment, both psychologically and legally.
When Annie Clark and Andrea Pino enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, they had no idea their college experience would be defined by sexual abuse. Both were raped early in their matriculation, and both were ignored by administrators more concerned about public image than public service.

I am currently in my last stretch of college at the University of Texas. I don't think I've had the "traditional" college experience. I don't go out with friends to a bar on a Friday night. I haven't been to a single party or sporting event. I don't drink. I'm not in a fraternity. My life is pretty laser focused on film in so many different ways because that is what I enjoy. Due to that, I stay pretty removed from a lot of the goings on around campus. That doesn't mean I don't hear about it. Just the other day in class, we were having a group discussion about travel which transitioned into many girls talking about the precautions they take to avoid sexual assault, both traveling and just day-to-day life. Though they were speaking in a matter of fact tone, it made me really depressed that this was...

2. One in 33 college men will be sexually assaulted.
3. Only five percent of campus assaults are reported.
4. Experts say false reports account for...

The Hunting Ground Radius/ CNN Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten. Data-based on Rotten Tomatoes. Grade: B+ Director: Kirby Dick Screenwriter: Kirby Dick Cast: Anna E. Clark, Andrea Pino, Kamilah Willingham, April Powell-Willingham, Erica Kinsman, Tom Seeberg Screened at: Review 2, NYC, 2/10/15 Opens: February 27, 2015 I don’t get it. When I went to Tufts University during the fifties, girls had curfews, co-ed dorms were considered pure folly, virginity was not the exception, and the fraternity houses served beer without date-rape drugs as the only beverage at parties. Any student rapes must have been quite expertly hushed up because I had not heard of a single one, despite the [ Read More ]

The statistics are staggering. One in five women in college is sexually assaulted, yet only a fraction of these crimes are reported, and even fewer result in punishment for the perpetrators. From the team behind "The Invisible War," comes "The Hunting Ground," a piercing exposé of rape culture on campuses, poised to light a fire under a national debate.
This film and its tough subject are Very welcome.
It is clear from this film that the major American Universities (and those not so major, i.e. smaller) have been engaged for many years in a shameful coordinated national campaign to deny the rampant sexual abuse of women (and!! - in the film - some men as well) and to use extreme methods to protect violent predators and to silence, ignore and further traumatize women victims.
In a tour de force of verité footage, expert insights, and first-person testimonies, the film follows undergraduate rape survivors pursuing both their education and justice, despite ongoing harassment and the devastating toll on them and their families. Scrutinizing the gamut of elite Ivies, state universities, and small colleges, filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering reveal an endemic system of institutional cover-ups, rationalizations, victim-blaming, and denial that creates perfect storm conditions for predators to prey with impunity. Meanwhile, the film captures mavericks Andrea Pino and Annie Clark, survivors who are taking matters into their own hands—ingeniously employing Title IX legal strategy to fight back and sharing their knowledge among a growing, unstoppable network of young women who will no longer be silent.
This second major revelation in the film are the nascent organizing attempts of these amazing survivors of criminal attacks fighting against all odds to find, encourage and support the many thousands of campus victims all over the Us of vicious sexual attacks.
This film should be shown Now in every college and high school and church and synagogue in the Us. It and its subject / subjects are just that important.

Sundance has a way of moving the cultural thermometer. The fest can function as a discovery ground for emerging talent (Quentin Tarantino, Precious' Gabourey Sidibe), a place where familiar performers are brushed off and made new by the transgressive strength of independent film (Patton Oswalt, Pierce Brosnan), or as one-stop shopping for major studios that snap up small, heartfelt indie efforts to bring them before a massive mainstream audience and win fancy awards (Little Miss Sunshine, Whiplash). But every few years, a movie will arrive here to force an issue into the public consciousness just as it rises to...
