We seem to have run the gamut of the zombie apocalypse film. Like the possession film, it’s getting to be more and more difficult for filmmakers to breathe new life into the sub-genre, with only a few managing to eke out moments of true inspiration. Enter Canadian filmmaking trio Rkss‘ horror comedy We Are Zombies, which introduces a world in which zombies exist, but do not crave brains or human flesh. In fact, depending on the circumstances of their death, they may still be fully functioning, and even have the ability to speak. Because of this, zombies are now second-class citizens given the politically correct label of “living-impaired,” with their civil rights constantly under attack. We’ve seen more benign zombie apocalypses like this in things like Warm Bodies, so it’s not as if this is completely original territory, but it’s still nice to see something different than the doom-and-gloom post-apocalyptic wasteland.

In "We Are Zombies," the team behind 2015's stunning low-budget dystopia "Turbo Kid" and '80s killer-thriller "Summer of 84" asks: what if zombies were real and non-cannibalistic? Filmmaker collective Rkss uses zombies as a marginalized minority to impart social commentary in a world where they're harmless, law-abiding citizens viewed as a festering scourge. We eventually reach a bloodthirsty conclusion brimming with gonzo gore, but that's not the norm for "We Are Zombies." Instead, Rkss frames a slacker comedy around an alternate universe where walkers flip burgers and pay bus fares. It's morbidly cute and curiously endearing — even if less successful juvenile jokes sometimes hinder momentum — all leading to a ravenous third act that delivers the flesh-tearing gore horror fans crave.
The film centers on three bumbling scam artists: D&d dork Karl Neard (Alexandre Nachi), the teddy bear wrestling fan Freddy Mercks (Derek Johns), and Karl's tech wiz half-sister Maggie...

Dear readers, before I can move forward with my review of We Are Zombies, it’s only right that I inform you that I will be very biased in my assessment of this movie. First off, I’m a big fan of the works from filmmaking trio Rkss, and their debut feature Turbo Kid is one of my all-time favorites. Secondly, I went to college with some of the cast (though I won’t reveal who) and have seen them grow from background to principal characters. Finally, the film was shot around my home city of Montreal and I can pinpoint exactly where many scenes took place.
But I am not alone in my love for both Rkss and We Are Zombies. Its world premiere was chosen to be the closing film for this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Before it even screened to a sold-out room, there was a...

In today's Horror Highlights, we have a Q&A with The Gracefield Incident at Mathieu Ratthe, new stills from Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories, and details on Famous Monsters of Filmland's presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Mathieu. How and when did you first come up with the idea for The Gracefield Incident?
Mathieu Ratthe: First of all, thank you, Derek, for your interest in our film. I wanted to create a suspenseful story that scared the crap out of the audience, but also made them emotionally involved, which is really tough to do in this kind of movie, but I think we achieved it pretty well in our film.
The conceptual idea (or I liked to call it the “technique”) came after I realized how many days I was given to shoot our film with the budget that I had.

"Some things can't be unseen." Holy crap this looks freaky. An official trailer has debuted for a freaky new alien horror movie titled The Gracefield Incident. This is yet another found footage movie, but the twist is that one guy implants a camera into his eye in order to give us a proper Pov view. He does this to capture footage of a weekend getaway with friends to a cabin in the mountains. But one night a meteor crashes down and things get scary when giant alien creatures start tormenting them. Starring Mathieu Ratthe (who also wrote/directed the film), Kimberly Laferriere, Victor Andres Turgeon-Trelles, Juliette Gosselin, Alexandre Nachi, and Laurence Dauphinais. Aliens seriously freak me out, and this looks totally nuts. "This is what we're fighting." Roadside Attractions has debuted the first trailer for Roland Emmerich's new film Stonewall, a movie about the Stonewall Riots in New York City in the 1960s. Directed by Emmerich before he moved on to Independence Day: Resurgence, they recreated "the village" from Manhattan circa 1969 in a former train repair facility in Montreal to film this. The cast includes Jeremy Irvine, Jonny Beauchamp, Caleb Landry Jones, Joey King, up-and-comers Karl Glusman, Vlademir Alexis, and Alexandre Nachi as well as Jonathan Rhys Meyers & Ron Perlman. This actually looks really, really good. While there is a fun coming-of-age 60's vibe, this is also about the start of the Lgbt rights movement. Here's the first official trailer for Roland Emmerich's Stonewall, direct from Roadside's YouTube: A young man's political awakening and coming of age during the days and weeks leading up to the Stonewall Riots in New York in the 60s.

Taking a break from big action movies like "Independence Day," "Stargate," "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012," filmmaker Roland Emmerich has turned his attention towards a smaller scale drama for his next effort "Stonewall".
Written by Jon Robin Baitz ("Brothers & Sisters"), the film deals with the true events surrounding the 1969 riots outside of New York's Stonewall Inn after police raided the famous gay and transgender bar. Said fight gave rise to the gay rights movement not just in the U.S. but around the world.
Jeremy Irvine, Jonny Beauchamp, Caleb Landry Jones, Joey King, Karl Glusman, Vlademir Alexis, Alexandre Nachi, Matt Craven, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Ron Perlman all star in the film which gets a Toronto premiere ahead of a late September release.
