Selena Gomez‘s friend has one less kidney — and a huge heart.
The “Hands to Myself” singer, 25, revealed on Instagram Thursday that she recently stepped out of the spotlight after having a kidney transplant, made necessary by her battle with lupus. She also shared that the donor was a longtime pal, 29-year-old actress Francia Raisa.
Gomez shared a photo of the friends holding hands from their hospital beds.
“There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa,” said Gomez. “She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me.

San Francisco (AP) — Pop legend Paul McCartney is set to return to Candlestick Park to offer a swan song to the San Francisco 49ers' former stadium. McCartney's website posted a statement Thursday confirming that the former Beatle will perform on Aug. 14 at what is being billed as the last concert at Candlestick. His appearance became contentious last month when McCartney's worldwide concert promoter, Barrie Marshall, mentioned he had visited the 49ers' new Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara as part of negotiations about a possible opening concert there in August. The San Francisco Chronicle reports city officials felt slighted, since San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee had personally invited McCartney to close the "Stick." The Beatles played their final paid concert there in 1966. San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department Director Phil Ginsberg says the city's persistence helped seal the deal. No less an authority than Stephen King calls Nick Cutter’s The Troop “old-school horror at its best.” The book, which goes on sale February 25, finds a young group of scouts on an isolated wilderness trip confronted by a strange man with a horrible, deadly infection. Early reviews are invoking everything from Lord of the Flies to Night of the Creeps, which is a good sign in my book. I’ll have my own review of the novel here at Fearnet next week, but for now we’ve got a few words with the author himself. Fearnet: You've cited Stephen King as a major influence on your work and this novel in particular. What elements of his work do you see in The Troop? Cutter: Well, I cribbed its structure from Carrie, which is a debt I make clear in the acknowledgements. “The Body” (made into the film Stand by Me) is another obvious touchstone.

[For anther perspective on this historic collection, read Blu Gilliand's review of Turn Down the Lights here.] In October of 2013 – mere months ago – editor Richard Chizmar spontaneously decided he wanted to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Cemetery Dance magazine with an anthology, and that he wanted to bring his friends in horror along with him. The fact that, in mere weeks, Chizmar was able to assemble a collection that included new work from writers like Stephen King, Jack Ketchum, Peter Straub, and Clive Barker, merely cements the ongoing importance and vitality of Cemetery Dance. Turn Down the Lights functions as both a celebration and a summation; aptly, quite a few of these stories are about endings, quiet and loud. Stephen King’s “Summer Thunder” kicks things off with a bleak slice of post-apocalypse. While King has been exploring the end of the world for six decades now – from 1969’s Stand prologue “Night Surf” to, most recently, 2008’s “Graduation Afternoon” – he continues to find new angles of interest.

Today, San Francisco became Gotham City. Make-a-Wish helped 5-year-old Miles, who has battled leukemia for years, fulfill his dream of becoming Batkid. All over the city, fans came out to cheer him on, and they shared support and snaps on Instagram using the hashtag #sfbatkid. Batkid was spotted driving around in his Batmobile Lamborghini and rescuing a damsel in distress from the cable car tracks, and another Batman, Val Kilmer himself, even got in on the fun, writing on Facebook: "Just heard the riddler is robbing a bank in the financial district. Hurry #sfbatkid." If you weren't feeling weepy-eyed yet, Batkid's little brother dressed up as Robin. And even President Barack Obama congratulated Batkid for saving Gotham. We were on the scene at Gotham City Hall, where Mayor Ed Lee gave Miles a key to the city. A Us prosecutor and an FBI agent were also on hand to thank Batkid for his service,...

On Friday, November 15, San Francisco became Gotham. The city did not do this for Comic-Con, nor to film a new movie. The city did this to fulfill the dreams of a five-year-old boy named Miles with leukemia. Miles hails from Tulelake, in Northern California. He was diagnosed with leukemia at just 18 months old, but ended treatments in June. Fortunately, he is now in remission, and ready to take on his next big, brave mission: becoming Batkid. "I've been planning the wish and working with the family since March," said Patricia Wilson, executive director of the Make-a-Wish Greater Bay Area chapter.

Today, San Francisco gets a new name: Gotham City. It's all going down thanks to 5-year-old Miles, who will put his fight against leukemia on hold for a day to fight crime. Miles asked the Make-a-Wish Foundation to help him become Batkid, and the organization is happily making that dream come true. Here are five things we love about this story. Miles surprised his parents with his wish. When the Make-a-Wish Foundation interviewed Miles, his parents had no idea he would ask to become Batkid. Real crime fighters are getting involved. Today, the police chief of San Francisco - I mean Gotham - will ask if anyone knows where Batkid is, because he needs his help capturing some bad guys. Crime fighting will take Miles all over the city. Batkid will rescue a damsel in distress from the iconic cable car lines, capture The Puzzler as he robs a downtown vault,...

The official ballots for the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards are now available online, and while they won't tell us who's going to be nominated, they can tell us who won't be.
We scoured the ballots to dig up the notable omissions (if you were hoping for an Arya Stark nomination, better luck next year) and surprising inclusions (go get your directing nomination, Jennifer Love Hewitt!).
Where's "Bunheads"?
Every ABC Family original series (including "The Lying Game," "Baby Daddy" and "The Secret Life of the American Teenager") is submitted for consideration as either Outstanding Comedy or Outstanding Drama except for the network's most outstanding show: "Bunheads." Huh?
Star Sutton Foster submitted herself in the Comedy Actress category, but "Bunheads" is otherwise Mia from the ballots (even in technical categories like casting, main title design and costume design).
Other shows completely out of contention are more understandable, though Starz's canceled "Boss" earned enough...

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is not looking to ban alcohol sales for Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 3, but he is concerned about what happened back in October when the San Francisco Giants won the World Series -- riots and vandalism.
Lee is urging businesses to voluntarily limit the sales of hard alcohol during Super Bowl Xlvii, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
He announced Thursday (Jan. 24) that he and Chief of Police Greg Suhr will be in the neighborhoods hit by the riots after the World Series to offer support to business owners. San Francisco City Hall was awash in nakedness when a group of nudists stripped down inside the building to protest a Board of Supervisors vote to approve a recent ban on nudity in the city.
Public nudity is legal in San Francisco, but the City Hall has issued a ruling forbidding it. According to the San Francisco Examiner, the ban was introduced by Supervisor Scott Wiener, who received complaints from constituents whose children were exposed to nudists at a public open space, using genital jewelry to maintain erections.
The approval at the meeting spurred seven nudists to strip off their clothes and shout anti-corporate slogans at Wiener.
Guards covered the protesters with blankets and ejected them. As the act of being nude in public is not yet illegal, only one nude protester, Ercell Fleurima, was placed under arrest on the charge of interfering with lawful business by a public agency,...

Neighbours airs one of its biggest episodes of the year on UK screens later this month as the teens are at the centre of a terrifying car crash. The drama plays out on Andrew Robinson's (Jordan Smith) birthday, when he is on the way to a concert with Chris Pappas, Tash Williams, Summer Hoyland and Ed Lee. At first it seems that there is a great night ahead for the gang, but the evening's first surprise comes when they discover that Sophie Ramsay (Kaiya Jones) has snuck into the boot of Chris's car. Sophie has decided to play stowaway after Paul banned her from attending the gig, and when her hiding place is uncovered, Andrew bullies Chris (James Mason) into overloading the car so they don't have to turn around and take her home. As the journey continues, there is another twist as Summer (Jordy Lucas) unexpectedly comes across...

I'll never forget the day Jerry Garcia died.
It was a Wednesday; I was ten. My father came home in the middle of his work day, crestfallen, with the news. He spent the rest of the afternoon with his record collection, taking me through the life and legacy of his hero.
(Editor's Note: I know everyone in San Francisco thinks their dad was the Biggest Deadhead Of All Time, but mine actually was. We had Jerry's handprint, complete with the missing middle finger, framed on our wall.)
It's been almost 17 years since our city's greatest rock star passed away, and last Friday marks what would have been his 70th birthday. Accordingly, the Bay Area celebrated with tributes only fit for a legend.
On Wednesday, the San Francisco Giants held their annual "Jerry Garcia Day" at At&T park, complete with Jerry bobbleheads for attendees and a live concert before the game.

In honor of "The Secret Life of the American Teenager's" 100th episode (which aired last night on ABC Family), we caught up with actress Francia Raisa, who plays the sexy and scandalous teenager Adrian Lee on the hit ABC Family Show.
The half-Honduran, half-Mexican actress dished exclusively to The Huffington Post about the show's important milestone, told us why she thinks her character is bipolar, and explained how it feels to be nominated for her very first Teen Choice Award for her work on the show!
First of all, congratulations on your Teen Choice nomination!
Thanks! Yeah, I got that and an Imagen Award nomination. It was for Female Scene Stealer.
Of course! You steal every scene you’re in! Is this your first Teen Choice nomination?
Yeah. Usually the show is nominated and I’m part of the cast, so I count that, but this is the first nomination for me alone,...

Last Saturday, "Secret Life of the American Teenager" star Ken Baumann tied the knot with his girlfriend, "Superbad" actress Aviva Farber, in a private ceremony in Malibu.
A few days after the wedding, we asked Baumann's "Secret Life" co-star (and on-screen love interest) Francia Raisa, what she thinks of the happy couple.
"Oh my God, I love them so much!" gushed Raisa, who plays rebellious teenager Adrian Lee on the hit ABC Family series. "We all went to Cabo a year ago before he proposed and I got to know her and I hung out with her and I think she’s perfect for him—they fit each other so well," she added.
Raisa, who called the bride "amazing," said she even encouraged Baumann to propose to Farber. "You know, he's turning 22, but I was like, 'you're not going to find anyone else better. Wife her up now, because if you don't,...

Festival promoters Another Planet Entertainment have released the full lineup for this summer's Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and it looks like they're going all out this year.
For the festival's fifth anniversary, there's a throwback theme--legacy acts Metallica, Neil Young and Stevie Wonder are headlining the epic three-day party slated for August 10th through 12th.
Some of the other top line acts playing the festival are the newly solo Jack White, Grammy-winning dubstep ambassador Skrillex and legendary Modesto-based indie-rockers Grandaddy.
Outkast rapper Big Boi is back for the second straight year, hopefully this time he won't have the same technical issues that prevented him from actually performing anything the last time he was here.
Also, because it's our stated goal to mention local garage rock heroes Thee Oh Sees as much as possible, Thee Oh Sees are playing.
According to a study conducted by San Francisco State University,...

The cheftestants on "Top Chef Texas" (Wed., 10 p.m. Est on Bravo) got a few surprises -- some nasty, some nice -- Wednesday night.
First, there was the return of Beverly Kim. As the winner of The Last Chance Kitchen competition she got to rejoin the fray in the fight for the final four spots, and her rivals were not happy to see her back. At all.
In the Elimination Challenge the gang of five cheftestants were tasked with creating a dish that would make their mentors proud. The best four dishes would send their creators through to the Final Four in British Columbia, with the least successful dish sending someone home.
As the winner of the Quickfire Challenge, Sarah Grueneberg had already judiciously chosen a guaranteed spot in the Final Four over taking away a Prius, so was not up for Elimination.
At judges' table, Paul Qui and Beverly were deemed safe,...

With the launch of Tequila Academy, Portal A Interactive, the creative production outfit behind boxing docu-series White Collar Brawler, is going from punch-drunk to well, drunk. Producers Kai Hasson and Nate Houghteling, responsible for San Francisco-focused viral sensations Don't Stop Believing, an inspiring homage to the San Francisco Giants, and 2 Legit 2 Quit, a campaign video for San Francisco mayoral candidate Ed Lee, have departed their beloved city for the the Jalisco region in Mexico, the home of Tequila, a fiery spirit that sometimes does leave you feeling punched in the face. Tequila Academy is an 8-episode travel series for Tres Agaves Tequila that follows the adventures of Hasson and Houghteling as they interact with workers in the field, local priests, regulatory officials, public intellectuals, tequila family barons, local tequila legends in their transformation from novices to tequila experts. In fact, the show challenges popular misconceptions about tequila as merely a get-drunk-quick party liquor,...

Here’s a new ‘viral’ campaign video for San Francisco mayor Ed Lee featuring the rap stylings of none other than Mc Hammer himself, with cameos from will.i.am, Ronnie Lott, people from Google, Youtube, and Twitter, and of course, the Giants’ Brian Wilson. Every day on the internet, I ask myself the question “What is anything anymore?” That question most definitely applies to a pseudo-ironic pop cultural mishmash set to “Too Legit To Quit” that feels like a rejected 5-year-old Lonely Island sketch but in reality is a call to action to vote for the lead political official of a huge American city. And to answer my own question: “I don’t blergggg?” As always, a Youtube commenter makes rational sense of the whole thing:...

Fright Night
Directed by Craig Gillespie
Starring: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Toni Collette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Release Date: August 19, 2011
Horror fans are well aware of the gloom associated with many remakes of well-known films, but despite this, I was pleasantly surprised with Craig Gillespie's take on Fright Night. The new film certainly pays tribute to the original film, but definitely brings it into the contemporary age, with a faster pace and some solid performances from the lead cast members.
Fright Night follows a great deal of the same plot elements as its original namesake. Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) begins to have a sneaking suspicion that his new neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell) is a vampire. Brewster seeks the assistance of famous "vampire hunter" Peter Vincent (David Tennant) in the fight against Dandrige, to protect his mother, Jane Brewster (Toni Collette), and his girlfriend, Amy Peterson (Imogen Poots...

Those who tuned into ABC's The Bachelorette season finale earlier this week witnessed San Francisco's very own Ben Flajnik get dumped in favor of New York's J.P. Rosenbaum. For all the Sf Weekly readers who thought to themselves, "I would have picked him instead," here's your chance.
If we are to believe Flajnik's new Twitter account, the Josh Groban lookalike has already moved on since his humiliating proposal to Ashley Hebert, and is pursuing someone else's proverbial rose: Ours, the San Francisco voters. His Twitter bio reads: "Winemaker, Failed Proposer, and Future Mayor of San Francisco."
Granted, we are taking this about as seriously as we are now taking Mayor Ed Lee's repeated promises that he wouldn't consider running for mayor. But that doesn't mean Ben F. (not to be confused with fellow contestant Ben C.) doesn't have what it takes.

Hailing from the ABC Family series about the real life implications of sex and pregnancy for teenagers today, though portrayed through a warm and loving lens, The Secret Life Of The American Teenager holds up a mirror for high school kids today. There was a time when the name Leisure Books was synonymous with horror novels. When it came to mass market paperbacks, Leisure ruled the horror world. Authors like Ed Lee, Craig Spector, Brian Keene, Richard Laymon, Graham Masterton, Jack Ketchum, and even Stephen King have published with Leisure, which was owned by Dorchester Publishing.
Under other lines Dorchester publishes romance, thrillers, westerns - you name it. However, in 2009 things began to go sideways at Dorchester. Within months the company as it was known was gone: sales and editorial staff fired, reports of shipments to stores and authors delayed, creditors piling up along with unpaid royalties to authors.
In mid-2010 Brian Keene (pictured right; Ghoul, The Rising, Urban Gothic) forged a deal with the company for the return of all publishing rights to his work in return for the forgiveness of all money owed to him by Dorchester. This was the...

It wasn't officially ladies-only night on So You Think You Can Dance Wednesday, it just felt like it thanks to Lauren Froderman, Christina Santana and other female standouts.
The women stole the show during the auditions in Chicago and L.A. in what would've been a great hour of TV. Like The Bachelorette, however, it's two hours for some reason.
In any case, the second auditions episode was as fun as the first, thanks to Lauren Froderman, 19, a cheerleader who (apparently) would make an enthusiastic stripper, too.
That's a new one.
Christina Santana, meanwhile, is familiar to fans who saw last season, thanks to a memorable near nose-breaking incident. In 2010, the salsa dancer looks better than ever.
Then there's Rachel Girma, 18, a rhythmic gymnast training for the Olympics until she hurt her foot. Her athleticism and intensity make up for her lack of experience (none).

If there's one thing I learned from the second night of auditions on "So You Think You Can Dance" on Wednesday night (June 2), it's that dancers now have to be capable of doing back flips. In both Los Angeles and Chicago, contestant after contestant proved that the auditions were more about athleticism and less about raw talent and performance ability. The judges spent most of the show marveling over all types of gymnastic abilities and tricks.
The first girl in L.A., a cheerleader, did more tumbling, high kicks, and sexy poses than actual dancing (aside from a beautiful assisted arabesque), yet she was praised for her routine and playfulness. The second contestant was actually a rhythmic gymnast with only two weeks of dance training, and her performance mostly focused on her flexibility and strength. Her transitions at times looked awkward, but she — like the cheerleader before...
