One of the most valuable lessons that most people learn in life is that if something is too good to be true, it probably is. That truism is at the center of the new Apple TV+ documentary “The Pirate of Prague,” premiering on Monday, Nov. 13. The doc tells the story of an uber-wealthy young man who swindled his equally affluent friends into giving him money for a project that never existed… then he disappeared. A pair of journalists start at the beginning and follow the trail until they find him. You can watch with a 7-Day Free Trial of Apple TV+.

The company, via its Apple TV+ service, is launching The Pirate of Prague. The eight-part series is hosted by journalist Joe Nocera with the help of investigative journalist Peter Elkind and tells the story of the charming young Czech, Viktor Kožený.
Kožený smooth-talked his super-wealthy Aspen neighbors and a Wall Street titan into investing huge sums of cash to snap up Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil company, promising staggering returns. Sounds too good to be true, right?
It is the story of private jets, $20,000 dinners, and suitcases stuffed with cash. It’s also a tale about the collapse of communism, the free-for-all that followed, and the rise of the oligarchs. And it’s a story of plain-old human greed…of just how far the rich may go to get even richer.

Exclusive: The Shrink Next Door podcast host and writer Joe Nocera is creating two Audible true-crime podcasts.
Nocera will co-write and host the as-yet-untitled non-fiction shows with podcast indie Blanchard House and Poppy Damon.
Blanchard is so far keeping the subjects fairly quiet but one is inspired by an Agatha Christie novel and the other looks to an iconic American drama.
Nocera is the host and writer of Wondery podcast The Shrink Next Door, which has gone on to become an Apple TV+ show starring Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell about the bizarre relationship between a psychiatrist to the stars and one of his patients.
“Joe is an unparalleled talent and we are so lucky to have him at Blanchard,” said Rosie Pye, Blanchard House Creative Director and Co-Founder.
Blanchard launched towards the end of last year with 1M seed investment and journalists and producers from the BBC, The Economist and Times of London.

Question: What do Kathryn Hahn and Paul Rudd have to do to get some love from the Emmy Awards next year? Answer: Star in a buzzworthy AppleTV+ limited series that is one-part psychological drama, one-part dark comedy.
Despite their superstar status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Hahn plays devious witch Agatha Harkness and Rudd has headlined a bunch of MCU blockbusters as fan-fave superhero Ant-Man), both actors have surprisingly struck out at the Emmys.

“The Shrink Next Door” gets its title from the 2019 Wondery/Bloomberg podcast hosted by Joe Nocera, but whether you listened to the business reporter’s investigation into Dr. Isaac Herschkopf and his fraudulent manipulations of patient Marty Markowitz, what’s peculiar about the Apple TV+ adaptation is that there is no next-door neighbor. In the podcast, Nocera discovers this doomed pairing because they’re living on the other side of his fence, and the idea that such a twisted tale could be taking place one house over is part of what gives the strange-but-true story such an eerie wallop. Shattering the normalcy of a relatable neighborly relationship is a provocative entry-point for this bonkers, private debacle.
The show, developed by Georgia Pritchett (a writer on “Succession” and “Veep”), jettisons that perspective in favor of fully investing in its two main characters, as well as the two movie stars playing them.

The eight-episode dark comedy based on the original Wondery podcast of the same name is inspired by true events. It examines the bizarre dynamic that unfolds between soft-spoken New Yorker Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Will Ferrell) and Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Paul Rudd), the psychiatrist who manipulates and exploits him for nearly three decades. Dr. Ike is joined in infiltrating Marty’s life by his unsuspecting wife Bonnie (Casey Wilson), and though Marty may be blind to the shrink’s abuses, his hard-headed sister Phyllis (Kathryn Hahn) is not. In the first teaser for the dark comedy, psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf (Rudd) asks his longtime patient Martin “Marty” Markowitz (Ferrell) to stop using “the f-word” — but it’s not what you think. Ike wants Marty to stop saying he’s “fine,” because as the teaser shows, he clearly isn’t. The clip features Marty breaking down in various ways, until one day, he has a breakthrough. As Billy Joel’s “My Life” plays, Ike and Marty form a boundary-crossing friendship, one that eventually involves Marty burying what appears to be a dead body.

Showalter and Jordana Mollick will executive produce on behalf of Semi-Formal Productions.

Great Odin’s Raven! There’s an “Anchorman” reunion on the cards at Apple TV Plus.
The streamer has handed a straight-to-series order for “The Shrink Next Door,” a comedy limited series which will see Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd reunite on screen for the first time since “Anchorman 2.” Apple won the rights to the series, which was announced earlier this year, in a highly competitive situation with multiple platforms in the running. In another example of how the industry is having to adapt to the coronavirus situation, sources with knowledge of the deal say it was conducted entirely virtually.

While it won’t be for a third “Anchorman” movie — at least, not as of yet — Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd will be back together again. Only this time around, it will be on the small screen, with Mrc Television’s dark comedy limited series “The Shrink Next Door.”
Based on the 2019 Wondery and Bloomberg Media podcast of the same name — which was inspired by true events — “The Shrink Next Door” focuses on the bizarre relationship between a psychiatrist to the stars, Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf, and his longterm patient, Martin “Marty” Markowitz. What starts as a normal doctor-patient dynamic slowly turns into the all-too-charming Ike (Rudd) taking over Marty’s (Ferrell) life. From moving into Marty’s home to take over his family business, “The Shrink Next Door” is a tale of dysfunction and manipulation.

The premise of talk therapy centers on giving a person the space to discuss and process their innermost feelings, fears and desires with a mental health expert in a professional setting. Though great in theory, in some situations, the uniquely intimate relationship between a therapist and their client can go very wrong. This dynamic — and its potential for abuse and undue influence — are the subject of a new true crime podcast, The Shrink Next Door.
