Red Joan, directed by Trevor Nunn, is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jennie Rooney and is loosely based off the life of Melita Norwood. An elderly British woman who in the early 2000s was outed in secret documents by British Intelligence, alleging that Norwood provided detailed plans to the Ussr communist regime about Britain’s developing secret nuclear program, throughout her time working as a secretary at the British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association. Nunn’s film follows the truly bizarre story of a young woman emotionally manipulated and internally conflicted on her political beliefs and the direction her heart wants to take.

In certain circles (and in scads of UK tabloids), Melita Norwood was known as the “granny spy.” In 1994, the aging former British civil servant was outed as a former Kgb spy who passed nuclear secrets to the Ussr. That came as quite a shock to her family and friends, who were likely only somewhat soothed by the government’s decision not to prosecute her because of her age.
While Trevor Nunn’s “Red Joan” isn’t an exact biographical treatment of Norwood’s story (her Russian code name was Hola), the spy drama pulls generously from both her life and the Jennie Rooney novel inspired by it. The result is a strange, bifurcated tale of love and espionage, with Judi Dench stuck in a thankless role that does nothing to capitalize on her talents. The film is worse for it.
At least Sophie Cookson, who plays the younger version of Joan throughout the film,...

There are few bigger legends among actresses than Judi Dench. An Oscar winner, almost anything she chooses to be in is with your attention. Whether it’s a prestige Academy Award hopeful or a blockbuster like the James Bond franchise outings, she’s usually able to elevate the material and provide a reason to watch. However, that’s not the case here with Red Joan. This independent drama does her no favors and she’s unable to save it. This is the poorest use of Dench in some time. Boring, meandering, and constantly unsure of how to generate intrigue, it’s a tale that falters almost immediately. The film is a drama, though that posits that anything especially dramatic occurs. The first scene is interesting, as we see Joan Stanley (Dench) arrested by British police. What could they want with a little old lady? Well, it turns out she’s...

Red Joan starring Dame Judi Dench is releasing in cinemas nationwide from Friday 19 April and to celebrate we are giving 3 lucky winners the chance to win a copy of the novel on which the film is based on.
The year is 2000 and Joan Stanley (Dench) is living in contented retirement in suburbia at the turn of the millennium. Her tranquil life is suddenly disrupted when she’s arrested by MI5 and accused of providing intelligence to Communist Russia.
Cut to 1938 where Joan is a Cambridge physics student who falls for young communist Leo Galich and through him, begins to see the world in a new light.
Working at a top-secret nuclear research facility during WWII, Joan comes to the realisation that the world is on the brink of mutually assured destruction. Confronted with an impossible question – what price would you pay for peace? – Joan must choose between betraying her country...

IFC Films has acquired domestic rights to Judi Dench’s period spy thriller “Red Joan,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap. IFC Films is planning to release “Red Joan” theatrically in 2019.
Loosely inspired by the biography of British Kgb agent Melita Norwood, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday and is directed by Trevor Nunn. The film also stars Sophie Cookson. “Red Joan” was written by Lindsay Shapero (“Royal Wives at War”) based on Jennie Rooney’s best-selling novel of the same name.
“Red Joan” features Dench as Joan Stanley, a retired scientist living in a London suburb who is arrested for crimes committed many years ago. We flash back to 1938, and young Joan (Sophie Cookson) is a new student at Cambridge, where a chance encounter with Sonya (Tereza Srbova), an alluring fellow student, draws her into a circle of politicized...

Trevor Nunn is not the first director to accrue both a glorious stage résumé and a paltry, pedestrian screen one. Still, given the talent involved, it’s disappointing that “Red Joan” does so little to change that — his first theatrical feature since a decent “Twelfth Night” adaptation 22 years ago is a would-be sweeping epic that instead turns out tweedy, dreary, and unconvincing.
Something was surely lost along the way as the real-life story of one Melita Norwood — a British civil servant of scant note until her pro-ussr espionage was revealed when she was an elderly retiree — turned into a 2014 novel by Jessica Rooney, then into this tepid film incarnation. Beyond all other intrigue, our heroine here proves an under-radar key player in shaping the power dynamics of the Cold War. So it’s dismaying that so little drama is wrung out of the tale, and that what we get too...

“Sergeant Damian Scott, do you have a death wish?”
If there are two styles of comedic scenes I like on Strike Back, it’s: (1) when Stonebridge and Scott are trapped behind but find time to riff about topics and (2) when Scott is flirting with a new girl.
This new clip from Strike Back Season 3 Episode 8 is something of a combination of those two styles. We have Scott and Piragova trapped in a jail cell. The two begin to argue, but Scott can’t help but add in his patented come-on lines – even when he’s the butt of the joke.
Also, if any of the Section 20 fans out there haven’t heard the news, Philip Winchester was just cast in a Joe Mazzello (The Pacific, The Social Network) indie flick, entitled Undrafted. It will be the directorial debut for Mazzello. The film will also feature Matt Barr (Hatfields and McCoys...

“What the f*^k are we doing here, anyway?” – Scott
There comes a time in every action hero’s life, where he finds himself behind bars. Such is the case on this week’s Strike Back.
There are only four episodes of Strike Back left, including this Friday’s episode. So, I ask you? What’s up with a season renewal? Get your friends tuning in folks if you want more international action. After all, Winchester did tell us that he was looking forward to a mission in Thailand next year. So, let’s see it.
Here’s a clip from this week’s episode. Stonebridge (Philip Winchester) and Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) also “do the thing” they do when they decide who is going to take the shittier task – play paper, rock, scissors.
The photos below feature Zubin Varla, Robson Green, Stapleton, Winchester, Peter Guiness and Tereza Srbova.

Opening with a man pawning a ring for 75 euros and a camcorder, all accompanied by the voiceover of a radio DJ talking about three girls going missing of the streets of Dublin, The Inside soon transforms into yet another found-footage film as the man discovers the camcorder still has a tape in it and plays it back. However what he sees isn’t merely footage of a group of girls on a night out, but footage of the girls descent into madness and the very depths of hell.
I absolutely hated (and I really mean hated) The Inside for the first 35 minutes of its running time. Shot in a first person perspective, the film started out with a group of obnoxious girls on a night out. It then descended into...

Directed by Fernando Mierelles
Written by Peter Morgan
It’s not difficult to see why the organisers of the 55th London Film Festival selected the new film by Fernando Mierelles, the spherically titled 360, as the opening night gala film. As well as being written by British scribe Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon, Hereafter) and starring three of the UK’s most successful acting exports in the forms of Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Rachel Weisz the film also presents a global tale than spans four continents, in a fashion that echoes the festivals international remit, considering its strands devoted to World Cinema, Cinema Europa, French Revolutions, New British Cinema, and many other experimental and historical programming frontiers. It also doesn’t hurt in having a few fantastically beautiful people to power the necessary red carpet star wattage for the all important gala publicity and punditry, it’s such a...

Imagine if you will a slasher film set in the tropics. A group of young people take a boat out and have sex, drink lots of wine, and party all night long. Their vacation is interrupted, however, when the men on the boat spot an island full of beautiful women who are singing a haunting tune, and they take their ship off course. They attempt to rescue and get into bed with these island goddesses, but the women brutally murder everyone. Now, just keep imagining that movie because I guarantee it will be more exciting than anything you will see in Siren.

Lionsgate will be releasing its new supernatural thriller Siren on March 22nd on DVD. The film has a great story about the mythological character which finds a group of friends out boating who find a young girl needing help who actually turns into their worst nightmare. She is a Siren, a sea nymph who lures people in by her sweet singing mariners to destruction on the rocks surrounding her island.
Siren stars Anna Skellern (The Descent Part 2), Tereza Srbova (Ink Heart), Eoin Macken (The Tudors), Anthony Jabre who all make this film really fun to watch. It's not a great movie but it does have its creepy moments and just a touch of special effects and blood, which as a horror fan I always love plenty of blood. The DVD has a running time of 80 minutes which is just right for a film like this.
