Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers up periodic tips about philanthropic efforts going on around the planet. Later this month, a bill to ban plastic bags will go to the California State Senate, and if it passes, California will become the first state to ban single-use grocery bags. The Adrian Grenier–founded Web site Shft, which explores the countless sustainable choices available to consumers in hopes of inspiring people to lead more eco-conscious lives, has started a crusade supporting the bill. Sign Shft's petition here—then go out and buy a re-usable shopping bag.

Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers up periodic tips about philanthropic efforts going on around the planet. Today, International Day of the World's Indigenous People, the United Nations is working to increase the visibility of the planet's 370 million indigenous people by screening films made by members of those communities at the U.N. headquarters, in New York City. One of the films, Sikumi (On the Ice), directed by Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, tells the story of an Inuit hunter who becomes a witness to a murder when he is driving his dog team on the frozen Arctic in search of seals; the movie won the Jury Prize for Short Filmmaking at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. If you can't make it to the U.N. today, check out three of the films here.

John Esposito and the author before flying over the mountaintop-removal mining sites in West Virginia. Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers periodic advice about how readers can give back and do good. After I discussed West Virginia's coal-mining industry with Senator John Rockefeller's office when I was lobbying in Washington, D.C., in May, I couldn't pass up the opportunity when my friend John Esposito, president of Warner Music Nashville, offered to show me examples of mountaintop-removal mining in the state. "Espo," as his friends call him, was the force behind the Warner Music Group's and the Grammys' efforts to go green. It was while greening the paper inserts of Warner C.D.s that Espo learned about mountaintop-removal mining and got involved, becoming an environmental leader on the issue. Mountaintop-removal mining, the subject of a story in this magazine not too long ago, is the practice of blasting...

U.S. Fund for Unicef. Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers up periodic tips to help save the planet. Today marks the six-month anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti and millions of Haitians still live in a shattered landscape. Families are still missing loved ones, unsure if they are alive or dead. Water is scarce and sanitation virtually nonexistent in the makeshift campsites where many residents are housed. Shelter is scarce. Violence is growing. But there is hope in the work of aid organizations such as Unicef. Since Unicef had a strong presence in Haiti before the earthquake, it was able to quickly respond with child-protection services—setting up education shelters so children don’t lose time in school, creating safe play spaces for those too young for school, reuniting children with lost family members, and distributing clean water to prevent an outbreak of waterborne diseases. Don’t...

As we celebrate the Fourth of July today, take a moment to support those that risk their lives to protect and preserve the United States's independence: the nearly two million American troops that have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, thousands having been deployed multiple times. Give back to the veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and their families by taking action on behalf of the disabled veterans to make it easier for them to apply for the disability compensation and pension benefits that they have earned through their service. Sign the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America’s open letter Congress to reform the V.A. claim’s process and disability benefits reform. [Iava]...

By Anna Zieminski/Afp/Getty Images. Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers up periodic tips to help save the planet. While the entire planet has been turning to South Africa to watch the World Cup, there is another side of South Africa that the globe's citizens should know about: the country has the highest rape rate in the world. During one 90 minute World Cup match, 317 South African women will be raped. One in four South African men admit to raping someone, with nearly half having said they had attacked more than one victim or participated in gang rapes (common in South Africa because they are considered a form of a male bonding or a way to prove one’s supposed manhood or power). South African culture has a deeply rooted culture of violence against women. It is men’s attitudes toward women that are the root of the problem.

Click here to plant a flag virtually on the National Mall. Then, on June 30, the Sierra Club will plant an actual flag on the Mall in its place, sending President Obama the message that this Fourth of July, just as we wanted independence from the British more than 200 years ago, we now want energy independence, especially from oil and all the dangers that come with it. An ethnic Uzbek girl prepares food in a refugee camp outside the village of Begabad, on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, on June 15. By Victor Drachev/Afp/Getty Images. Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers up periodic tips to help save the planet. On June 11, ethnic violence broke out in Kyrgyzstan, resulting in a severe refugee crisis. Nearly 300,000 people have been displaced within Kyrgyzstan, and another 100,000 have fled their homes for neighboring Uzbekistan. Most of the displaced are women and children, men having stayed behind to protect their neighborhoods and quell the violence, but all are in dire need of assistance. Humanitarian aid to the region has been slow, but the International Rescue Committee is there, providing emergency shelter, water, sanitation, relief supplies, and food. Support those in need in the Kyrgyzstan region, and donate to the I.R.C. today. [International Rescue Committee]...

Angelina Jolie's P.S.A. for World Refugee Day. Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers up periodic tips to help save the planet. Last year 43 million people around the world were forcibly displaced from their homes, the highest number of people uprooted by conflict and persecution since the mid-1990s. And with conflicts in places such as southern Sudan and Iraq stagnated and not near resolution, the number of refugees returning home also dropped to the lowest point in 20 years. “Already a majority of the world’s refugees have been living as refugees for five years or more,” the United Nations Refugee Agency’s High Commissioner Antonio Guterres has said. “Inevitably, that proportion will grow—if fewer refugees are able to go home.” This Sunday is World Refugee Day. As you celebrate Father’s Day, please remember the millions of people who live without home or country, as...

By Chuck Kennedy. Vf.com's resident philanthropist Claire Bernard offers up periodic tips to help save the planet. Today Americans consume more than 20 percent of the world's oil but dwell in a country with less than two percent of the world's oil reserves. Beyond the risks inherent in drilling four miles beneath the surface of the Earth, our dependence on oil means that we will continue to send billions of dollars of our hard-earned wealth to other countries every month—including many in dangerous and unstable regions. If we refuse to heed the warnings from the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, we will have missed our best chance to seize the clean-energy future we know America needs...

Tinsley Mortimer laughs in the face of danger. Photograph by Kevin Tachman/ BackstageAT.com Okay, so it wasn’t a real conservatory. It was part of a show room in the gorgeously designed studio of interior decorator William Sofield. And Tins wasn’t using the python as a weapon. The sweet, reptile-loving socialite was just channeling her inner Britney by draping the albino snake over the nape of her neck. The serpentine interior of Sofield’s workspace was dimly lit and smoky. When I saw Mortimer in a red dress, I couldn’t help but think of Clue’s Miss Scarlet. Little did I know, she'd dressed the part for The Heart Truth. Mortimer is tired of keeping things low key. “I have my TV show, High Society, coming out on March 10th on the CW, so I’m excited,” plugged the party-hopping Columbia graduate. “From Thanksgiving up until now...

Ric Pipino (right) curling Tinsley Mortimer's hair. Photographs by Kevin Hatt. "Do you all see each other at shampoo bowls often?" was a question that got a hearty laugh yesterday afternoon at the Ric Pipino salon, in New York City, where Manhattan's queen-bee socialites had gathered to primp and prep themselves for the flashbulb frenzy at the Whitney's annual Art Party. The museum's event, which features a silent art auction that raises money for the institution, is one of the more important junior see-and-be-seen social functions of the year, and the girls who had been invited to the salon had a team of hairstylists, makeup artists, and manicurists on hand to help them get camera ready. The gem-box-sized downtown salon, which has only been open for about six weeks, was already buzzing when I arrived at four p.m. It wouldn't be long before Tinsley Mortimer, Claire Bernard, Genevieve Jones,...
