Sometimes horror films rely one one thing…and that is gore, but there are certain criteria that must be met to make it more than just another forgettable b-movie. There has to be a setting, a storyline and some kind of reason that at least keep the movie coherent for the fans. This is why Don’t Go In the Woods fails for me.
The fact that the movie was placed on the “Video Nasty” list in the UK is enough to catch my interest, but now in our more enlightened times when we get to see it uncut I can’t help but understand why the...

In director James Bryan’s 1981 cult classic, a group of obnoxious campers venture into the wilderness for what they assume will be a fun filled weekend.
Unknown to them, a bloodthirsty maniac is hiding in the woods, watching their every move, and violently killing them, one by one, every chance he gets… Filled with low-fi gore effects and black humor, Don’T Go In The Woods remains one of the quintessential regional slasher films of … Continue reading →

Ask any self-respecting slasher buff about the genre’s ‘golden age’ and they will doubtlessly wax poetic about the plasma-packed pot-boilers of the 1980s – the decade of destruction that gave us Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and the transsexual teen-tormenter of the Sleepaway Camp series. Given the label’s name, what better way for 88 Films to celebrate this halcyon era of horror than with a series of numbered and collectible sanguine-splashed shockers from the period of VHS and video nasties?
88 Films is proud to announce the launch of a new “Slasher Classics” line – kicking off with a digitally re-mastered DVD release of Don Gronquist’s notorious censor-baiting backwoods sickie Unhinged (1982). Further fearful fun will be delivered with Don’t Go in the Woods (1981) – the effortlessly enjoyable “hunt ‘em and kill ‘em” epic that once had British authorities outlawing its very exhibition! Directed by James Bryan, Don’t Go in the Woods...

There was a point during the latest “found footage” film, Crowsnest, where I actually contemplated never watching a horror film again. About half an hour into this derivative and aggressively annoying backwoods thriller, I paused the DVD and took a short, dark tea time of the soul. (In this instance, it was coffee.) Five self-involved 20-somethings on their way to a remote cabin in the woods are terrorized by an Rv. All of this, naturally, is captured by a hand-held video camera that is kept running even in the most dire of situations. Making the experience all the more insufferable was the monotonous dialogue highlighting my biggest pet peeve in this genre: confusing antagonism for drama.
These characters, four of whom are coupled, clearly do not like each other. Whatever their relationship, they find easy annoyance with any thought or action not their own. Pity poor Kirk (Asiam Husain), who...

A little while back, I had the distinctive honor of talking to horror film director Nick Millard, the genius behind Criminally Insane, Death Nurse, and dozens of other wonderful films. Mister Millard has been in the biz since the 1960s, starting out making sexploitation films like Uta and Nympho. In 1975 he went into horror with Criminally Insane, and in 1977 he made action movie history with .357 Magnum. Nick has always been one of my all-time favorite directors, ranking with Norbert Moutier, Todd Sheets, James Bryan, and Doris Wishman, so I had to restraint my inner fanboy to bring these words to print. Take it away, Nick!
Adam Mudman – I’ll kick things off in the best way possible; by asking how you got your start. How did this all begin? How were you raised, and how did it impact your decision to become a filmmaker?
Nick Millard – I remember how it started.

Veteran crooner Englebert Humperdinck is set to represent the UK in the 2012 Eurovision song contest which will be held in Azerbaijan during May. Humperdinck will sing Love Will Set You Free which was co-written by Grammy Award-winning Martin Terefe and Sacha Skarbek. Guitarist James Bryan who has previously worked with Nelly Furtado will accompany the singer on stage.
Humperdinck will be hoping to emulate British acts such as Bucks Fizz and Sandie Shaw who won the continental singing contest in the past but voters from Europe have been less than kind to British acts in recent years. Performers from East European nations have dominated the event for the last decade although Norway and Germany temporarily bucked that trend with a surprise wins in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Acts from 25 other nations...

I set out to create a list of the most memorable horror songs, which slowly morphed into a collection of the most memorable end credit horror songs. And now I suppose it’s a list of the ten most memorable 80s end credit horror songs. But I didn’t set out with that as a guideline. It just sort of happened that way. In looking over this list now, I’m left to wonder why nobody puts much effort into the end credits music these days. Since it’s the last impression the viewer has of a film, why not make it memorable?
That’s what these songs have in common.
Some are genuinely cool while others are downright baffling, but I’ve never forgotten them. Even the head scratchers. For your listening pleasure, I’ve included links to all the songs should you need a refresher. And, as always,...
