Rom-com formula is given an exuberant meta-kitchen-sink overhaul in Playing It Cool, about a screenwriter (Chris Evans) who doesn't believe in love, which proves troublesome when he's hired to write a romantic-comedy script — and then meets a philanthropic woman (Michelle Monaghan) who rocks his world. Self-consciously referring to itself at every turn, Justin Reardon's film is awash in narration, flashbacks, animated vignettes, costume-heavy fantasy sequences, dance numbers, camera tricks, CG effects, graphical text, narrative leaps in time and location, and all manner of other clichéd devices, including Evans's ribald banter with his weird-but-cool best friends. Fortunately, those sidekicks are played by a host of uniformly funny supporting...

Chris Evans explores the incessant rom-com theme of whether heterosexual males and females can ever be just friends in the first trailer for Justin Reardon‘s “Playing It Cool.” Originally titled the less clichéd “A Many Splintered Thing,” the Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair-scripted rom-com stars Evans, fresh from receiving U.S. distribution for his directorial debut “Before We Go,” as an aspiring action movie screenwriter who is forced by his agent, Bryan (played by Evans’ “Captain American: The Winter Soldier” co-star Anthony Mackie) to pay his dues with a rom-com in promise of a six-week action film set in Malaysia. Evans’ [...]

Chris Evans is a screenwriter who wants to write an action movie. But according to his agent, he's gonna have to write a rom-com first. What will this emotionally stunted bro do? That's the premise to Playing It Cool, a film directed by Justin Reardon, and one that seems to have sat on the shelf for a bit. But with the charming Evans as lead (and featuring Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, and Martin Starr), it's like we're getting another shot at What's Your Number? and we'll take it.

Can it be considered fantasy when someone with the face and charm of Chris Evans is unlucky in love? Maybe so, but Playing It Cool is sticking firmly in romantic comedy territory, as shown by its first trailer. The idea of the cynical romantic, burned too many times by love but perhaps willing to give it just one… more… chance is a well-used trope in rom-coms. So, perhaps is the idea that men and women – particularly those in some state of potential lust – have trouble just being friends. In this case, our love-blighted hero is a screenwriter who is sick of writing romantic comedies and really wants to graduate to action. Part of the problem is his own love life is a mess, and is further complicated when he meets the seemingly ideal Michelle Monaghan. Trouble is, she’s engaged to Ioan Gruffudd, so they decide to be pals. Good luck with that,...

Chris Evans doesn't just play Captain America in the Marvel movies. He also likes to star in quirky little romantic comedies. We've got a trailer for his upcoming flick Playing It Cool, and his Captain America: The Winter Soldier co-star Anthony Mackie is in it, too. The movie also features Michelle Monaghan, Aubrey Plaza, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson, Philip Baker Hall, Giovanni Ribisi, and Martin Starr.
This is the story of Me (Evans), a young man disillusioned by love, who meets a breathtaking young woman, Her (Monaghan), at a charity dinner by pretending to be a philanthropist. Only one problem: she’s engaged. Yet, he engages into a platonic relationship to be able to keep seeing her. Like a young Walter Mitty using the power of imagination and wild vignettes, He will stop at nothing to conquer Her heart.

I’m just going to put this out there: romantic comedies are now really hard to write. I mean, as a creative endeavour, it’s a full-on cliché minefield. To correctly balance all the elements required – chemistry, tension, humour, romance – while avoiding the most well-worn cinematic devices, is monumentally difficult. A fool’s errand, some might say. And yet, still they appear, because still writers try to bring something new and fresh to the genre. Still we buy those tickets, and sit in the dark – hoping to be pleasantly surprised, but knowing we will probably be disappointed.
So, here we are again, with a new trailer for another daring attempt. The film is titled Playing It Cool in this preview, but was previously known as A Many Splintered Thing. Does it achieve the impossible dream? Is this film that most elusive of treasures – that mythic creature that continually slips our collective grasp?...

Following the trailer for Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper's reunion in Serena, yet another film that was shot in 2012, but has sat on a shelf for a couple years, has a trailer that has surfaced online. Playing It Cool (formerly called A Many Splintered Thing) marks the return of Captain America franchise star Chris Evans to the romantic comedy genre, and it's even a bit of a meta story as it sees him playing a screenwriter who gets pushed by his agent to write a romantic comedy to help boost his career. But Evans isn't the kind of guy who believes in that cheesy love bullshit. Cue falling in love with the right girl. Watch! It seems today is the day when trailers for movies shot in 2012 and have been sitting on a shelf are finally arriving. In case you missed it, the first trailer for Susanne Bier's "Serena," starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, just dropped, and now comes the debut promo clip for "Playing It Cool" (which is either the international or new title as it was previously called "A Many Splintered Thing") and we're curious why this film has been collecting dust. Starring a pretty good (on paper at least) ensemble including Chris Evans, Michelle Monaghan, Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie, Topher Grace, Luke Wilson, Philip Baker Hall, Giovanni Ribisi and Martin Starr, the sorta-meta Justin Reardon directed movie follows a screenwriter who wants to write an action film but is pushed by his agent to do a rom-com instead. As the prestigious Cannes Film Festival comes to a close today, perhaps it’s time to shift our ever-so-serious, “yeah, but is it Palme-worthy?” gaze elsewhere. And maybe we’ll point it at something less exalted, perhaps not to be esteemed at all, who knows? The upcoming relationship comedy “A Many Splintered Thing” was shot all the way back in 2012, and it still hasn’t been screened or released to the public. The movie stars Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan, plus Anthony Mackie, Patrick Warburton, Topher Grace and Giovanni Ribisi, and it’s about how unrequited love motivates a guy to write about his experience (I’m pretty sure that’s not even Grand Prix-worthy, but I could be wrong). Directed by first-time filmmaker Justin Reardon, the movie even has appearances by Aubrey Plaza, Martin Starr, Ashley Tisdale, Ioan Gruffudd, Luke Wilson, and Philip Baker Hall. So where is it?...

Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.

Written by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair, and directed by Justin Reardon, the movie centers on a young man disillusioned by love, who meets a breathtaking young woman at a charity dinner by pretending to be a philanthropist.
But, as usual when there’s love involved – a problem soon shows up. That young woman is engaged to a guy who doesn’t like her going on dates. Sounds logical, at least for us, but not for our romantic hero.

Natalie Portman is currently looking over a number of projects, most with a similar action-edge. Tyler Shields’ Final Girl cast Hunger Games star Alexander Ludwig. And Seth Green landed a part in the indie movie The Identical. Get the details below:
Hunger Games‘ Alexander Ludwig just landed a new gig. The young actor has been cast in Final Girl, the debut feature of famed celebrity photographer Tyler Shields. Ludwig will star alongside Abigail Breslin. Final Girl tells the story of a young woman (Breslin) who has been targeted by a pack of teenage boys – we suspect Ludwig is one of said boys – as part of a sick initiation ritual. But she ends up turning things around for them. Source: Variety Director Justin Reardon is busy casting his debut feature A Many Splintered Thing. Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Giovanni Ribisi, Topher Grace and Philip Baker Hall have all joined the cast.

• Seth Green is joining Ashley Judd, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pantoliano in The Identical, an indie drama that traces the history of rock-and-roll from the 1940s through the 1960s through the prism of a single family, with Liotta and Judd as the father and mother, and Green as a drummer who falls into the classic indulgences of an American rock star. Music video director Dustin Marcellino is making his feature debut with the film, from a script by Howie Klausner (Space Cowboys). [Variety, THR]

Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan have acquired a whole bunch of new friends joining them on the set of A Many Splintered Thing. The film, which is being directed by Justin Reardon, now has Topher Grace, Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, and Giovanni Ribisi on-board to star. Deadline, which found the casting news, says that the movie exists somewhere between (500) Days of Summer and Amelie, telling the story of a down-and-out young man who meets and falls in love with an engaged women white attending a charity dinner and pretending to be a philanthropist. Getting encouragement from his friends and ignoring her soon-to-be husband, the protagonist decides to fake a platonic relationship with her so that he can make his way to her heart. News about the "anti-romantic comedy" sprung up early last month when Evans and Monaghan were cast. The script by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair was featured on...

Anti-romantic comedy? Count me in! A Many Splintered Thing is an upcoming indie which comes from director Justin Reardon, but – for an indie project – it already has some seriously good cast on board. I mean, Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan make the leading duo, while Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Giovanni Ribisi and Philip Baker Hall are all in talks to join them! That’s not bad at all!
Unfortunately, at this moment we have nothing to share about the (possible) new characters, but we do know that the movie will center on a man disillusioned by love (Evans) who meets an engaged woman (Monaghan).
Guess that’s the anti-romantic part of the story?
Excited by the challenge and egged on by his friends, he feigns a platonic relationship in order to keep seeing her as he tries to win her heart.
Anyway, let us also mention that Reardon is directing...

We were already excited about A Many Splintered Thing just based on the premise and the two leads, Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan. But now I'm really looking forward to it, since Variety reports that Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Philip Baker Hall, and Giovanni Ribisi are all in talks to star as well, while Deadline confirms Topher Grace has signed on the dotted line to play Evans' character's best friend in the film. That's a hell of a cast for first-time director Justin Reardon, and this indie "anti-romantic comedy" that's being compared to (500) Days of Summer is sounding pretty promising. Read on! The plot follows a man (Evans) disillusioned by love who meets a young woman (Monaghan) at a charity dinner by pretending to be a philanthropist. When it turns out she's engaged, the man fakes a platonic relationship in order to get closer to her and, egged on by...

With filming set to begin at the end of the month, director Justin Reardon is now tying down the rest of the cast that will join Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan in his debut feature. And for his first film, he's getting quite a nice assist on talent. Some of our favorite up-and-comers, reliable character actors, and stone-cold veterans are rounding out the cast with Anthony Mackie, Aubrey Plaza, Giovanni Ribisi, Topher Grace and Philip Baker Hall all set to the join the picture. The Black List-approved script (it was also a 2011 Nicholl Fellowship Finalist) by Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair is described as being along the lines of "Amelie" and "(500) Days Of Summer," and tells the story of a man (Evans) who has given up on love, until he meets an engaged woman (Monaghan) at a charity dinner, by posing as a philanthropist, He pretends to be her platonic friend,...

Despite his disgraceful good looks, Chris Evans will need a little help if he’s to woo Michelle Monaghan in A Many Splintered Thing. Fortunately for him, he’ll get some backup from Topher Grace. And that's not all the new arrivals, as Aubrey Plaza, Anthony Mackie, Philip Baker Hall and Giovanni Ribisi are in various stages of negotiation.Justin Reardon is directing the anti-rom-com from Paul Vicknair and Chris Shaffer’s script. It’ll find a guy disillusioned by love (Evans) sneaking into a charity dinner for mean-spirited fun by pretending to be a philanthropist. There, he meets a beautiful woman (Monaghan) and is immediately taken with her despite his negative attitude to all things love-related. Trouble is, she’s engaged and her fiancé is a stick-in-the-mud who barely likes her leaving his side. So, egged on by his friends (including Grace as his best pal), he feigns a...

Director Justin Reardon is behind the camera for a new campaign for Wrigley’s Eclipse Chewy Mints.
The Chew Your Way to Fresh campaign, which sees a couple morph from feeling down to feeling fresh, was created by Ddb Sydney through production company Station.
The ad comes about a year after Ddb created a spot for Wrigley’s in which a man frosts up a window after eating an Eclipse mint.
Ddb’s planning director David Chriswick said: “This ad is once again the outcome of a desire to build more engaging brand experiences. Last year’s ‘Toll Booth’ spot got the ball rolling and this new work is a step forward again. The product is great and we’re all determined to make the brand as equally successful through distinctive advertising that people like to spend some time with.”

As happy as I am to see Chris Evans get a big platform and, in turn, healthy coverage for his work with Marvel, it’s all the more pleasing to see the actor stick with more modest roots. Case in point is, no, not The Iceman, but A Many Splintered Thing, a film which Deadline tells us he’ll both headline and executive produce; Michelle Monaghan is joining Evans in the former capacity.
Justin Reardon, in making his feature debut, will helm a Black List screenplay by Paul Vicknair and Chris Shafer that’s described as an “anti-romantic comedy” cross between Amelie and (500) Days of Summer.
