Robert Downey Jr.’s brilliant string of roles in A24’s “The Sympathizer” (streaming Sundays on HBO) is a tour de force reminiscent of Peter Sellers’ legendary turns in “Dr. Strangelove.” But Downey does Sellers one better by portraying four characters that serve as interconnected projections of American patriarchy to the Captain (Hoa Xuan Nguyen), a Vietnamese double agent with a severe identity crisis.
After the fall of Saigon, the Captain is forced to flee to the U.S. to continue his post-war mission. He winds up in L.A., where he continues interacting with Claude, a pop music-loving CIA operative, and his college mentor, Hammer, a gay East Asian studies professor who sponsors him. In addition, the Captain gets introduced to Ned Godwin, a military vet-turned-congressman, and Niko, a counter-culture film director, who hires him as a consultant for his Vietnam War epic (inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s...

Park Chan-wook doesn’t actually know how Robert Downey Jr. responded to his characters in “The Sympathizer.”
The acclaimed Korean director worked with Downey for the first time while adapting Viet Thanh Nguyen’s bestselling novel for HBO, and he expected a big-name star at that level to drag out the negotiation process after getting an offer. To Park’s surprise, Downey circled back quickly, and the two of them started to dig into his character — his characters.
Downey, who also executive produced the series along with wife Susan, plays four characters (so far) in the limited series, each with a unique look and voice and motivations — all of which were built in process. There’s C.I.A. agent Claude, the Orientalist Professor Hammer, filmmaker Niko, and Congressman Ned Godwin, and Downey appears to thoroughly enjoy embodying every single one. When “The Sympathizer” showrunner and director Park Chan-Wook brainstormed ideas for HBO’s newest miniseries, one scene struck him as a “quintessential American institution and represented the idea of America.” It took place in a steakhouse with several characters coming together.
Based on the best-selling novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen and set at the end of the Vietnam War, “The Sympathizer” follows a captain, played by Hoa Xuande, in the South Vietnamese army who’s secretly spying for the North Vietnamese communists. As Saigon falls and the U.S. retreats, the Captain remains embedded and escapes to Los Angeles. Throughout, Robert Downey Jr. pops up as various characters who interact with the Captain including Claude, the Captain’s CIA contact, as well as a professor, a congressman and an auteur.
Park toyed with the idea of casting Mark Ruffalo and even Josh Brolin along the way, but in the end,...

"Fallout," Prime Video's stellar adaptation of the popular video game, is proving a hit with critics and fans since its April 10 debut. The fact the show has managed to faithfully recreate the expansive world of the video games on which it's based is impressive enough. But "Fallout" is also noteworthy for debuting original characters that fit effortlessly into the universe first established back in 1997, when the first game arrived. Among those characters, Walton Goggins' The Ghoul might be the series' most compelling.
In his 2016 review of HBO's "Vice Principals," The New York Times' Mike Hale wrote that Goggins "makes a habit of being the best thing about the television shows he's in." That arguably hasn't changed since, with the "Righteous Gemstones" star delivering an effortlessly charismatic turn as the irradiated bounty hunter in "Fallout." From the very beginning, Goggins' mutated gunslinger exudes an alluring magnetism, which, considering the actor was covered in extensive prosthetics,...

Walton Goggins, in a gruesome starring role in Prime Video’s apocalyptic sci-fi series Fallout, said he knew he knew he was in for “an intense experience” having to transform every day on set into The Ghoul, a post-human character with melting flesh, a cowboy persona and some semblance of his humanity still left.
But at Saturday’s Deadline Contenders Television panel, the perennial character actor — beaming in from overseas, where he is shooting The White Lotus — said the task of transformation proved to be “extremely anxiety provoking” at first. He had to figure out how to express himself under a thin layer of sweat-inducing facial prosthesis designed to make him look almost skeletal and how to be a walking, wisecracking horror show with a retainer in his mouth to simulate the absence of teeth.
“When I put in the retainers, these things that kind of covered these pearly white teeth,...

Among the many races in post-apocalyptic video game series Fallout is the Ghoul, posthumans severely mutated by prolonged exposure to radiation, which greatly extends their lifespans but gives them a zombie-like appearance. In the upcoming Prime Video “Fallout” series, Walton Goggins is almost unrecognizable as The Ghoul.
Bloody Disgusting caught up with Walton Goggins and executive producers, writers and co-showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner at the SXSW “Fallout” activation this week, where the trio revealed that The Ghoul was written specifically for Goggins. They also discussed what to expect from the series in terms of tone.
A character like The Ghoul requires extensive work in the makeup chair, as you might imagine, with the team transforming Walton Goggins into a noseless, zombielike cowboy in the wasteland. The type of transformation that surely informed his performance, right?

With every new fresh hell unleashed upon the world, it feels like each day we're inching closer and closer to the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the "Fallout" games. Technology continues to advance, but 1950s-esque ways of thinking are gaining popularity. Well, at least we can look forward to atompunk/retrofuturistic aesthetics and the ability to befriend robots. Prime Video has been working on a series adaptation of the mega-popular game series for quite some time now, revealing their first look all the way back in October of 2022. Due out in 2024, the "Fallout" series boasts an impressive cast, including "Yellowjackets" star Ella Purnell as Lucy, David Lynch Dreamboat Kyle MacLachlan as Hank, and everyone's favorite character actor, Walton Goggins as The Ghoul.
Mutated, noseless beings known as Ghouls are common in the "Fallout" games, and are among the first groups of survivors who attempted to rebuild civilization. Some emerged as a result of the Great War,...

This article contains spoilers for "Halloween Ends."
Like all slasher films, David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy will be heavily debated between generations of horror fans until the sun burns out, with people still screaming out "Team Corey!" or "It sucked!" with their last, gasping breaths. Regardless of how anyone personally feels about the trilogy, there's one thing we can all agree on — there are some pretty damn gnarly kills on display. "Halloween Ends" is home to some particularly shocking kill sequences, with the massacre at the salvage yard easily one of the best. During the scene, Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) gets revenge on a gang of bullies who torment him, including Terry Tramer (Michael Barbieri), Stacy (Destiny Mone), Margo (Joey Harris), and Billy (Marteen). Terry takes a blowtorch to the face, Stacy gets her head smashed by a wrench, Billy gets a drumstick stabbed through his head, and Margo...

The Exorcist: Believer (our review can be read Here), the latest entry in the Exorcist franchise, is now available on PVOD – you can buy it from Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link – and to mark the occasion, special effects artists Christopher Nelson and Vincent Van Dyke have taken to Instagram to share full body images of the demon that is only briefly glimpsed in the film! Since these are full body shots and demons don’t wear clothes in Hell, these images might be considered Nsfw, so I’m just going to link to them. Van Dyke’s post can be found Here and Nelson’s is over Here. One image of the demon can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Despite multiple red herrings, clues, and characters like Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) blaming Pazuzu for the dual possessions haunting The Exorcist: Believer, the entity responsible is actually a very different demonic figure from Mesopotamian lore: Lamashtu.
While the demon can be barely glimpsed in a quick flash on screen, makeup effects co-designers Chris Nelson and Vincent Van Dyke give a closer look at their stellar work via Instagram.
The Exorcist: Believer, now available on Digital, frequently makes callbacks and ties to the original film by writer William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin. Moreover, it frequently alludes to Pazuzu as the one behind the mysterious disappearance, reappearance, and subsequent possessions of young girls Angela (Lidya Jewett) and Katherine (Olivia O’Neill). It seems reasonable that the demon first encountered by Father Merrin (Max von Sydow) might be back thanks to frequent references and calls for “Mother” and a seemingly intimate familiarity with Chris MacNeil.

“We’re all blessed in some ways but also cursed to have the amount of legacy on this show because it means that you have almost 56 years of creative material to draw from, but that also means you have a lot of rules and regulations and canon that you have to adhere to. So there’s a kind of pressure to it as well,” notes “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas about the technical details that have accumulated throughout “Trek” history. We talked to Matalas for our “Making Of” panel series along with costume designer Michael Crow, makeup department head James MacKinnon, prosthetics designer Vincent Van Dyke and visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman. Viewers of the Emmy-nominated Angelyne on Peacock might be surprised to learn just how little of star Emmy Rossum they actually saw. Rossum said during a panel appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees event that 10 prosthetic pieces transformed her face and body into that of Los Angeles billboard queen Angelyne.
“Nothing of me is me,” Rossum said. “There’s two contact lenses in each eye. There’s a chest piece that wraps around up into the neck and the hairline. Even earlobes, hands — everything is not recognizable [as myself].”

Emmy-nominated makeup department head Kate Biscoe said the prosthetics created a unique paradox. Biscoe normally is tasked with making prosthetic material look like human skin. However, Angelyne herself has altered her body with plastic surgery.

For Peacock’s limited series Angelyne, looks were everything. Getting the visuals of the Los Angeles legend right was vital for sure, but so was imbuing Emmy Rossum’s portrayal of the mysterious billboard model with a sense of humanity, allowing a real character to move and exist beneath the intense makeup and prosthetics.
“This is obviously a herculean, Everest-style undertaking,” explains Rossum, who in addition to starring serves as an executive producer. “You have to have people of a certain caliber to pull this off. Otherwise, you see a mask and you don’t see a human being.” She articulates that while the show takes inspiration from a real person, it’s an interpretation of reality. “We’re not doing a biopic, we’re telling a story that is about a character. But it’s also a fantasy of everything that she represents.

In an Emmys season of some truly memorable transformations on screen, Emmy Rossum leading the cast of Peacock’s “Angelyne” may be the most mind-boggling.
The legendary billboard queen of Los Angeles is well-known for her larger-than-life appearance, with breasts, hair and makeup that could only be rivaled by a Barbie doll or drag queen. That is, until Rossum stepped into the role.
She sat in the makeup chair for upwards of five hours on some shoot days and embodied the icon over six decades, with each time period requiring a totally different set of accouterments. Those included individual prosthetics on her cheeks, chin, lips, nose, forehead, eyelids, breasts and neck. Even her ear lobes required their own unique pieces. Although it sounds like a lot, prosthetic designer Vincent Van Dyke told Variety he appreciated the challenge of transforming Rossum without it being obvious how much work went into the process.

“I’ve mostly been working in film, and I’ve realized TV is harder,” confesses makeup artist Nancy Vincent about her work on the pirate comedy “Our Flag Means Death.” For our recent webchat she continues, “It’s a lot faster. The most important thing for me was having an amazing team.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“Our Flag Means Death” tells the tale of Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), an aristocrat who abandons his family to pursue the life of a pirate on the high seas. Season 2’s makeup on “Euphoria” is “Season 1’s introverted sister,” explains the show’s lead makeup designer Doniella Davy.
As “Euphoria” fans everywhere gather to watch the latest chapters of Sam Levinson’s gripping fever dream on HBO Max (leading up to the Season 2 finale on Sunday), they are mesmerized by the both glam and gritty special effects seen in the world of East Highland. While Season 1 featured faces adorned with endless rhinestones, glitter and more, Davy notes that Season 2 stepped into a quieter (but equally-stunning) approach.
“I didn’t want to continue with the exact same Mo as Season 1. Part of me wanted to, because people were loving that, but… broadly across this show, there were stylistic, aesthetic changes and shifts,” Davy told Variety. “I think the main point, in a one-liner, of Season 2 makeup is to showcase that… a bold makeup look doesn’t have to be a huge look.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you have watched Apple and A24’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which is now playing in select theaters and streaming on Apple TV Plus.
In “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” Denzel Washington plays the titular Lord Macbeth — a Scottish nobleman whose last grasp at power ultimately leads to his downfall.
In addition to memorizing Shakespeare’s powerful soliloquies, the Academy Award winning actor and many in the troupe, including Corey Hawkins (Lord Macduff) and Alex Hassell (Ross), were also required to brush up on their dueling skills for the production, adapted and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Joel Coen.
Neither Washington nor Hawkins were master swordsmen before signing on for the Apple and A24 movie, but Hawkins had previously trained in stage combat and Washington had handled long knives in 2010’s “The Book of Eli.”

When Viola Davis committed to playing the trailblazing blues singer of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” she was uncompromising in her demand for historical accuracy. And that meant that the makeup and hair design had to reflect the actual gritty and greasy look of the heavy-set, swaggering “Mother of the Blues” during the 1920s. While some may wonder if the Oscar-winning actress took authenticity a tad too far, Davis insisted that such verisimilitude was essential in conveying the power of Rainey in director George C. Wolfe’s adaptation of August Wilson’s award-winning play.
“The makeup was hard to do,” Viola said at a recent Q & A. “I had to search for that information: tent shows, makeup like greasepaint melting off her skin. If I go for authenticity, she has her grill, a mouthful of gold teeth, a horsehair wig, a ton of makeup, smeared on during that day. Either go...

Jason Bateman won Best Drama Directing for “Ozark” last year, but was not even on that ballot for its third season this year. Bateman instead appeared on the Best Drama Directing ballot for the pilot of “The Outsider,” the new drama that brought in big ratings for HBO, but came up short for Emmy nominations. He gave up an easy nomination by not continuing to submit in the race for “Ozark,” a curious slight against a show that is perceived to be his baby, given his additional roles as its lead actor and executive producer. But by stepping aside, Bateman has shifted the focus to the others Netflix submitted in his place for “Ozark” in the Best Drama Directing race.

Someone cue up the Silver Shamrock TV spot because it's only 8 more days till Halloween....Halloween....Halloween! Enough of the Halloween 3 flashbacks, now onto the actual holiday itself and the big questions that come with it! How many children are going to die this year because of Trick or Treating. God that sounds awfully blunt. Can we type that?...
Horrorbid's Top 5 Halloween Myths Busted!
I guess we can type it but it doesn't seem right does it? Why should we even have to worry about kids on Halloween. One of, if not the greatest days of the year? Unfortunately because of myths and rumors each year less and less kids get a chance to experience the wonders of going house to house, ringing doorbells and asking for candy. Because of safety issues more communities than ever are having Halloween at high school gyms and convention halls. Is this really necessary?...
