Can you remember the first time you saw the sea? For some people it’s there from birth, often defining the way they live; for others it represents a sudden barrier. If you’re used to being able to go anywhere you want on foot, it’s an odd feeling to come to the edge. The ocean makes up four fifths of our planet’s surface. To the naked eye, it seems infinite, and we used to treat it as if that were really the case, but this year’s World Oceans Day is highlighting the fact that that’s not the case. United Nations special envoy for the ocean Peter Thomson has warned that a third of fish populations are being overfished and there is a real danger of mass extinction. As David Rasche warned at Cobie Smulders and Alexandra Cousteau’s Nautica Oceans City & Sea Party in 2015, plastic pollution has become.

Alexandra Cousteau. With the Gulf oil spill now in its 56th day, Vf Daily discussed the disaster’s ramifications with someone who has a deep connection to the health of our oceans: Alexandra Cousteau, the 34-year-old granddaughter of underwater pioneer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Among her many environmental bona fides, Cousteau sits on the boards of the Global Water Challenge, Mother Nature Network, and EarthEcho and on the scientific advisory board of George Mason University. She is also a member of the steering committee of the Shark Alliance and a founder of the global water think tank Blue Legacy. Vf Daily: So are all Cousteaus issued a snorkel at birth? Alexandra Cousteau: I learned to swim when I was six months old and learned to dive when I was seven, so water has always been a part of my life.

Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas trudged through a blizzard Monday on the fifth day of their hike with other entertainers and activists up 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro. “It’s pretty gnarly,” Elizabeth Gore, an executive with the United Nations Foundation, and one of the participants of the trek to raise awareness of global water issues, tells People by satellite phone. “The visibility is only 10 feet in front of you. And it’s cold. I’ve got six layers on.” With just a day left of climbing before hitting the summit of the Tanzanian mountain, the group reached 16,000 feet, causing...

A star-studded group including Jessica Biel and Into the Wild star Emile Hirsch endured torrential rain Friday during the second day of climbing the 19,340–foot Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest peak, to raise awareness of the global water crisis. "But it cleared up and we hiked up," Elizabeth Gore of the United Nations Foundation tells People by satellite phone. "The climb is really tough, but I'm proud to say no one has turned back." To give climbers, who began their trek uphill Thursday, a firsthand look at the crisis - one billion people worldwide have no access to clean water - the group spent several days before their climb visiting a village near Arusha, Tanzania. "Meeting the people and community in Tanzania … has been an invaluable and eye-opening experience for me,...

By this time Thursday, rapper/philanthropist Kenna will be leading a group that includes actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch and Isabel Lucas and musicians Lupe Fiasco and Santigold on the trip of a lifetime to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The ascent of the highest peak in Africa is not a casual vacation among bold-named friends, though, but part of an awareness raising trek called the "Summit on the Summit" aimed at shining a light on the global clean-water crisis.
The group will be joined by a panel of eminent scientists and thinkers who've been working on bringing desperately needed clean water to developing nations around the globe, and their climb will be chronicled in a 90-minute documentary slated to air March 14 at 9 p.
