Production designer Christian M. Goldbeck gave a shout-out to All Quiet on the Western Front‘s director Edward Berger and his team of APDs following the film’s Oscar win for Best Production Design.
“I am completely blown away,” Goldbeck said. “To our beautiful director Edward Berger, I could not have not have done this without you.” He continued, “This whole thing was a real team effort. My heart goes to all the other APDs, who worked on this project,” reiterating “I could not have done this without you.”
Set decorator Ernestine Hipper first thanked her parents, her sisters and “dear friends,” She continued: “When I started this, I was told Ernestine, don’t ever forget, you’re only as good as your team. So this is to all the hard-working people in Prague, and all the teams that helped me to get on this stage, the Academy, thank you so much.

The films competing for the 2023 Best Production Design Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” “Elvis,” and “The Fabelmans.” Our odds currently indicate that “Babylon” (10/3) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Elvis” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (4/1), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (9/2), and “The Fabelmans” (9/2).
There being 12 individual craftspeople in this lineup makes it the category’s largest since 2010. The last time there were more than this was 1988, when “The Last Emperor” designers Bruno Cesari, Osvaldo Desideri, and Ferdinando Scarfiotti defeated 11 challengers. The current group consists of four past winners and eight newcomers, with those who make up the latter bunch being Karen Murphy (“Elvis”), “All Quiet on the Western Front” duo Ernestine Hipper and Christian M. Goldbeck, “Babylon” pair Anthony Carlino and Florencia Martin, and “Avatar: The Way of Water” trio Dylan Cole, Vanessa Cole, and Ben Procter.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” has a strong possibility to win two Oscars on Sunday night despite it only receiving three bids, all in technical categories. What Kyle Smith in the Wall Street Journal called “one of the year’s richest and most ambitious films” is up for Academy Award nominations in Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Although it’s not a favorite to win for its costumes — “Elvis” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” have better shots there, per Gold Derby odds — it can absolutely win both production design and score. Here are the five reasons “Babylon” will win two Oscars on March 12.
1. Academy voters will want to reward the film somewhere.
Although some of the response to the Paramount Pictures film was mixed, there’s been a lot of passion for “Babylon” in the months since its release. If Oscar voters want to reward a film...

It’s “Everything Everywhere’s” world — we just live in it.
Last weekend, the PGA and SAG awards gave the final clues to which films and performances might be the victors at the 95th Academy Awards. All evidence points to A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which won both ceremonies.
With final Oscar voting running March 2-7, the race is still impossible to call in several categories, notably some acting ones. However, best picture and director are locked in for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s multiverse sensation. Assuming a likely WGA victory at Saturday’s ceremony, the movie will be the first to win all the major guilds — PGA, DGA, SAG and WGA — since “Argo” (2012). No film has ever lost best picture with all four behind it.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic took the BAFTAs for best film, alongside best adapted screenplay and best director, and hoovered up most of the craft honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.
As had largely been expected, Richard E. Grant was a delightfully upbeat and uncontroversial host, with no political jokes or any jibes aimed at the guests (although he did reference Will Smith,...

Following close behind with 10 nominations each are The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Other films battling it out for the top awards include Elvis, Tár and British film Aftersun.

There are many gorgeous-looking films in this year’s Oscar race, but even with 10 films nominated for Best Picture, only five films could be recognized for their production design, a role that plays a large part in the overall look of a film, along with cinematography.
Besides designing and drafting and deciding what needs to be built on soundstages, the production designer also is involved very early on in finding the best locations and hiring the rest of the art department, including the set decorator, who is responsible for dressing up said locations.
SEEAndrea Riseborough breaks silence on her contentious ‘To Leslie’ Best Actress Oscar nomination
Four of the five nominees this year are also nominated for Best Picture, while the nomination for Damien Chazelle‘s “Babylon” is one of only three nominations it received, and it didn’t make the cut for the top prize.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Production Design predictions.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

In the last two years, Florencia Martin has quickly established herself as the go-to production designer for auteurs who want to transform modern day Los Angeles into a vivid evocation of the city as it exists in our memories, dreams, and fantasies. Her meticulous recreations of the 197os San Fernando Valley in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” and 1950s Hollywood in Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde” represent some of the most impressive design work in recent memory, but Martin was just getting warmed up: With “Babylon,” Damien Chazelle’s celebration and indictment of Hollywood in the late 1920s, the production designer has created her most sprawling, detailed, and audacious sets to date.
Working with set decorator Anthony Carlino, Martin fills scene after scene with colorful surroundings that both express and comment on the characters’ inner desires and tensions, all while remaining faithful to the period without losing a modern sense of immediacy.

“Babylon” composer Justin Hurwitz knew the epic vision of his longtime friend and collaborator Damien Chazelle would be divisive. “It’s disappointing,” he tells Variety. “From the elephant poop through all the rest of the bodily fluids. I think we always knew the movie wasn’t going to be for everybody. It’s definitely disappointing that more people haven’t seen it in the theaters. I’ve read a lot of the reviews of people who absolutely love it. There are people who hate it. There’s a lot of in-between. I think it’s stunning. It’s not a conventional storyline.”

The Academy has released the list of nominations for the 2023 Oscars. Everything Everywhere All at Once led the pack this year with 11 nominations, followed closely by the war drama All Quiet On The Western Front and dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin.

Also in the running for best actor are Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Billy Nighy and Paul Mescal, all first-time nominees. In a surprising nod to indie film To Leslie, Andrea Riseborough scored a nomination for best actress. The race also includes Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.

While the Oscar nominations haven’t been revealed yet, the potential front-runners are becoming more obvious following the recent Golden Globe wins and last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards. While Austin Butler is widely considered a favorite to win for Elvis following his Globe win, last night Brendan Fraser took the best actor trophy for The Whale, meaning the award race is neck and neck between the two of them. The same goes for best actress, with Michelle Yeoh taking the Globes, but Cate Blanchett winning for Tár as the Critics’ Choice. One award that seems all but a sure thing is Ke Huy Quan as best supporting actor for Everything Everywhere All At Once, with him taking both the Globes and the Critic’s Choice Awards. With 11 nominees for Best Picture, 10 for Best Director, and nine titles battling it out for Best Drama series, competition will be fierce at tonight’s Critics Choice Awards. Several ties in the voting process led the 600-member Critics Choice Association to nominate more films than a category typically allows, which simply means that even more of the year’s biggest films and shows have a shot at the prizes.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads all films with 14 nominations, while Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” is close behind with 11 nominations. “Babylon” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” each picked up nine nods, while “TÁR” and “Elvis” each scored seven.
On the television side, “Abbott Elementary” and “Better Call Saul” led the pack with six and five nominations, respectively.

Although it hasn’t screened yet for critics or audiences, Paramount Pictures has revealed the awards submissions for Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon.” Initially published on the studio’s FYC site, the release had errors in the acting submissions, listing Brad Pitt as the lead actor and Diego Calva in supporting.
Variety can exclusively report that newcomer Calva and two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie will both campaign for best actor and best actress, while Oscar-winner Pitt (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) will be submitted for supporting actor.
Also listed on the awards site for acting consideration are Jovan Adepo and Tobey Maguire alongside Pitt, while Jean Smart and Li Jun Li are the two actresses vying for supporting.
Also part of the ensemble, which Paramount hopes can land among the five nominees for the SAG Awards top prize, includes P.J. Byrne, Lukas Haas, Olivia Hamilton, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel and Katherine Waterston.
