In April 2018, Netflix announced that Spanish heist thriller “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”) had become the U.S. streaming service’s most-watched non-English series ever.
With a Spanish series crowned as the first foreign-language blockbuster at the company that has transformed entertainment worldwide, Spain’s expansion — long nurtured by hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel” and “Locked Up” — well and truly lifted off.
Building on that success, in March 2021, Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez unveiled the Avs Hub Plan, which would invest €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion) into Spain’s audiovisual sector.
For a country in which the word españolada was used to write off supposed second-rate homegrown fare, the re-positioning of Spain’s film and TV industries as core drivers in its digital post-pandemic “reindustrialization” is little short of a revolution. Spain, Cannes Marché du Film’s 2023 country of honor, now accounts for seven of the 20 entries in...

In today's news of slightly unnecessary projects, Netflix is reviving its hit original film "Bird Box" with a sequel-extension film called "Bird Box Barcelona." You read that right, we're getting another "Bird Box" film, but seemingly one that is simply adjacent to, and not a continuation of, the events of the original. Interesting.
Netflix debuted a one-minute teaser trailer for the new film — which was announced back in March 2021 — and it gives us a glimpse into a similar event as the 2018 film, only in Europe this time. There is chaos in major cities, and folks turn to obscuring their sight in the outside world in order to obtain shelter. Again, it's very much a global repositioning of the events of the first film, however, it does seem like this new story will have some of its own twists and turns.

Top Spanish producer Nostromo Pictures, which is behind Netflix hit “Through My Window,” is partnering with Beta Fiction Spain to launch “Hermano Caballo,” a documentary by Marcel Barrera, director of “Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea” and “100 Meters.”
“Hermano Caballo” marks the first documentary produced by Nostromo Pictures and also the first handled by Beta Fiction Spain, the Spanish arm of Jan Mojto’s European studio Beta Film, which launched last year.

Barrena shows how Serra develops his own language with animals, especially with his horses, managing to communicate with them and establish strong relationships of trust and friendship.
“Hermano” is scheduled for a Spanish release before the summer and, to be announced soon, a festival that will serve as the doc-feature’s launch pad.

Pike, Brühl, and Culkin have since all had to depart the project due to scheduling issues – but Deadline reports that Rich Flu is now filming, with Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) taking over the role that once belonged to Pike.
In the cast with Winstead are Rafe Spall (The Big Short), Lorraine Bracco (The Sopranos), Dixie Egerickx (The Secret Garden), Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), Cesar Domboy (Outlander), Dayana Esebe (LA Star), and Richard Sammel (3 Days To Kill).

Spain has proved ever more successful in luring some of the biggest movies and series, and although 2020 saw a large rise in tax breaks, the big hike came in December. New record tax advantages raised relief for international productions to up to €20 million (21.4 million) per movie and 10.7 million for any single series episode.
In the Canary Islands — operating a special tax regime — the film tax break ceiling is now an extraordinary 38.6 million, one of the highest in Europe.
Effective Jan. 1, deduction rates for foreign productions are set at 30 for the first 1.1 million of deductible expenses and 25 for the rest in the Peninsula, and 50- 45 in the Canaries.
“The hike has solved a problem that prevented the capture of big productions,” says Carlos Rosado, president of the Spain Film Commission, a network of 41 film commissions and offices.
“The measures will undoubtedly serve to attract larger-scale projects,” adds Fernando Victoria de Lecea,...

Mario Casas, one of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, and Goya Award winner actress Anna Castillo, will headline “Escape,” the new film by writer-director Rodrigo Cortés.
Produced by Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls at Barcelona-based Nostromo Pictures, “Escape” is a free adaptation of same-title novel penned by Spanish author Enrique Rubio.
Nostromo announced the new film project after completing an intense 2022, in which the company lensed seven films and released two more titles – Marçal Forés’ “Through My Window” and Oriol Paulo’s “God’s Crooked Lines” – both achieving a standout global reach.
“Escape’s” story turns on N., a young man who wants to live in prison and will do whatever it takes to get there, raising questions such as if those who care about him will get to stop him from committing increasingly serious crimes and how far will the judge go to not grant him his proposal.

[Editor’s note: This article contains major spoilers for Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead.”]
Many movies arrive with dreams of a franchise, but “Army of the Dead” lands on Netflix with one already intact: Zack Snyder’s stylish and gory zombie action-thriller hits the streamer with two prequels already in the queue, 2022 anime series “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” and a standalone feature, “Army of Thieves,” based around Mattias Schweighöfer’s kooky safecracking character that’s already finished and coming out later this year.
“Army of the Dead” covers a lot of plot in its staggering credits sequence, when the walking corpses are battled and trapped in Sin City by a team of mercenaries. It’s clear that Snyder envisioned quite the complex timeline leading up to the gory heist at the center of his movie. But for all the intrigue surrounding where these undead came from and what happened earlier in the timeline, “Army of the Dead...

Cannes Market officially wrapped its first ever virtual edition on Friday. While many deals are still in the works, here are the five takeaways from this unusual 2020 edition:
The Winners
Cannes’ Marché du Film and the Hollywood agency-led A Demain Platform initiative delivered on the dealmaking front, re-invigorating the market after months of anxiety-inducing lockdown. The number of participants, projects launched and deals closed showed that the industry is still standing – in spite of the massive disruption created by the pandemic. More than 10,000 professionals took part in the virtual Cannes Marché du Film while the scheduled 12,000 screenings drew 42,000 views, said Jerome Paillard, the executive director of the Marché du Film. Panels and conferences also attracted record numbers of participants. On top of jump-starting the business and reconnecting people, the virtual format also had the merit of allowing folk who are usually not able to attend Cannes to take part, notably many producers,...

As coronavirus ravaged Spain in April, the country’s central government took one significant step toward building for a post-covid future. The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked — paradoxically — a new bullishness in Spain’s international production industry.
On May 5, Spain’s government greenlit a critical hike to tax breaks for Spanish and international productions, suddenly and significantly increasing the country’s competitiveness as a film and TV location destination.
Tax rebates for international shoots — and also tax credits for Spanish nationality productions — were increased from 25% to 30% for the first €1 million ($1.1 million) spend in the country and from 20% to 25% thereafter, capping a shoot’s total tax deduction at €10 million ($10.8 million).
In the Canary Islands, the rebate has been set at an extraordinary 50% for the first $1.1 million, and 45% for the rest — the highest rate of deduction in the world.
The new measures, especially the muscular rise in the rebate ceiling, produced a large...

Spain’s big shoots industry is putting the pedal to the metal, propelled by an encouraging improvement in tax breaks for international productions.
The moves aim to make Spain more attractive for big-budget projects, helping the sector look beyond Covid-19 crisis.
Approved May 5, the new measures increase tax rebates for international shoots from 25% to 30% for the first €1 million ($1.1 million) spend in Spain and cap a shoot’s total tax deduction at $10.8 million, up from $3.28 million.
It remains to be seen if the Canary Islands will continue to offer tax rebates 20 percentage points above rates for Spain’s mainland.
Navarre currently offers a 35% corporate tax deduction for Navarre-based companies, and the Basque Country offers 30% tax shelters for Spanish film/TV production.
The boost in incentives was received with a large sigh of relief by Spain’s production services industry.
“Improving tax rebate conditions will keep Spain’s competitive as an international location destination,...

Unspooling like the candy-coated dystopian design baby of “Midsommar” and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” the first trailer for the female-fronted “Paradise Hills” is a veritable feast of celebrated talent. The feature filmmaking debut of Spanish filmmaker Alice Waddington, the film is anchored by some of the buzziest actresses working in indie film: Emma Roberts, Milla Jovovich, Danielle MacDonald, Eiza Gonzalez, and Awkwafina. Waddington directs from a script co-written by fellow Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo, best known for 2017’s Anne Hathaway vehicle “Colossal” as well as his work with the cult horror anthology collective Bloody Disgusting.
Per the film’s official synopsis: “On an isolated island, Uma (Roberts) wakes up to find herself at Paradise Hills, a facility where high-class families send their daughters to become perfect versions of themselves. The facility is run by the mysterious Duchess (Jovovich) where calibrated treatments including etiquette classes, vocal lessons, beauty treatments,...

Madrid — Navarre has been a long-term film and TV shooting locale thanks to diverse and sometimes stunning landscapes that take in the Bardenas Reales badlands, immortalized in titles such as “The World Is Not Enough” and “Game of Thrones.”
One of Spain’s richest regions, Navarre has historically levied its own tax regime, which led in 2015 to its launching a highly competitive 35% tax credit for shoots which spend at least 40% of their budgets in the territory.
Once the incentive became part of Navarre’s film-tv mix, it started to generate larger economic activity around the audiovisual industry, and see high-profile national companies such as Tornasol Films and Nostromo Pictures choose Navarre as a preferential locale.
Gerardo Herrero’s Tornasol, for example, shot Terry Gilliam’s Cannes Festival closer “The Man Who Shot Don Quixote” in the towns of Galipienzo, San Martín de Unx and Lerga; Nostromo filmed feature adaptations of...
