Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.

Back in early 2020, we heard mention of an Alien vs. Predator anime series that had been made before the 20th Century Fox / Disney merger and never released. Now the folks at the Perfect Organism podcast have scored an interview with Joshua Izzo, who made Alien Day an official event while working at Fox. During this interview, Izzo confirmed that an Alien vs. Predator anime series was produced, all ten episodes were completed… and now they’ve just been sitting on a shelf (a shelf that is now inside the Disney vault) for years.
Izzo said (with thanks to Avp Galaxy for the transcript), “One thing that did not happen during Alien Day in 2016 was – there is sitting at Disney now, at 20th [Studios], 10 episodes of a fully completed Alien vs. Predator anime series that I produced. It’s done. It’s in the can. It’s mixed, it’s finished. It...

The tourism industry may still be reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, but Sony Pictures is making a big bet on its recovery with plans for a rebranded water park in Thailand and a new push into theme parks and location-based entertainment based on hit films like “Ghostbusters” and “Men in Black.” Thailand’s tourism industry is still at a standstill as it awaits for the country to reopen its borders. But Jeffrey Godsick, Sony’s EVP of Global Partnerships and Brand Management and Head of Location Based Entertainment, told TheWrap that the ventured announced Tuesday is part of a larger, decade-long campaign to create theme-park attractions from much the same way Disney and Universal have done. Sony announced on Tuesday that it has partnered with Thai water park company Amazon Falls to create Columbia Pictures’ Aquaverse, which is set to roll out new rides beginning in October.

“Ghostbusters,” “Jumanji” and “Bad Boys” are a few of the popular movies that will inspire rides and attractions at a newly announced theme and waterpark from Sony Pictures Entertainment and Amazon Falls.
Located in Thailand’s seaside town of Bangsaray, the upcoming tourist spot has been titled Columbia Pictures’ Aquaverse. It’s expected to open this October, Covid be damned.
Aquaverse isn’t being built from the ground up. Instead, an existing amusement park is being retrofitted with IP from Sony-owned Columbia Pictures. Sony is only licensing its brands, which have inspired attractions at other theme parks, such as Universal Studios in Orlando and Motiongate in Dubai.
“We are creating opportunities for all audiences around the world to immerse themselves deeper into our stories through water parks, touring exhibitions, and theme park attractions,” says Jeffrey Godsick, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s executive VP of global partnerships and brand management and head of location based entertainment.

The move comes at time for the Culver City, CA studio as it responds to viewers’ changing viewing habits during the pandemic, and the need to respond to emerging release patterns by harnessing Sony’s collective expertise in marketing a title through its entire lifecycle, across all platforms.
Due to the combining of departments, we hear that roughly 35 staffers were cut in distribution and marketing. While studio brass have been considering this type of restructuring for some time, the pandemic further hastened that decision.

Exclusive: Look out, here comes the Spider-Man.
Leading up to its Dec. 14 release, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will receive an extra $115M promotional boost from an array of global brands, making it one of Sony’s largest in the studio’s history, up there with Spider-Man: Homecoming which counted a $140M value. Spider-Verse also outstrips the recent $80M global brand promo of Universal/Illumination’s The Grinch.
Typically brands at this time of year seek to capitalize on Christmastime to drive sales, but the fact that they’re partnering with Spider-Man speaks to his commercial power, arguably up there with Star Wars.
“This is taking Spider-Man to a new level. The film has a revolutionary hero in Miles Morales and a unique and groundbreaking style of animation to match – so it mandated a campaign that complements the film’s originality and creativity,” explains Jeffrey Godsick, Sony’s Evp of Worldwide...
