Groundbreaking screenwriter and playwright Gregory Allen Howard passed away today at the age of 70. Howard made waves when his spec script about a real-life Black coach coming into a newly segregated Virginia school and helping lead their football team to victory hit Hollywood and was snapped up by Jerry Bruckheimer. Ultimately, they'd hire Denzel Washington to play the lead coach, Herman Boone, and the rest is history. "Remember the Titans" would go on to break the 100 million mark at the box office in 2000, a surprise hit for Buena Vista and its parent company, Walt Disney Pictures.
This would mark the first-ever accomplishment of a spec sale leading to a 100 million+ hit from a screenwriter of color and set Howard as Hollywood's go-to guy when it came to adapting the stories of historical Black figures.
Like most screenwriters, a good amount of Howard's work would remain unproduced, but he did collaborate...

Talk about a blast from the past. Kate Bosworth took to her Instagram on March 3 to share a classic #ThrowbackThursday snapshot of herself and a much younger Hayden Panettiere from the set of Remember the Titans. The caption dated the photo "9-12-99" and included a baby emoji. At the time, Kate was just 17 and Hayden was a fresh-faced, 11-year-old child star. For those who haven't seen the 2000 drama inspired by the true story of high school football coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington), Kate played Emma Hoyt, the girlfriend of football player Gerry Bertier (Ryan Hurst). Hayden played Sheryl Yoast, the football-loving daughter of Assistant Coach Bill Yoast (Will...

Alexandria City’s T.C. Williams High School, known for being the subject of Disney’s 2000 football drama Remember the Titans, is set to undergo a name change.
This week, members of the Alexandria City School Board in Virginia voted 9-0 in favor of changing the names of both T.C. Williams High and Matthew Maury Elementary School. The high school takes its name from Thomas Chambliss Williams, a former Alexandria City Public Schools superintendent who strongly opposed the Supreme Court’s 1954 ruling in Brown v. Board of Education and any notions of desegregation. During his time as superintendent, Williams claimed that Black students “learned differently” than their white peers and must be separated from them.
The grade school takes it name from an oceanographer who had served in the Confederate Army and attempted to negotiate a slave trade with Brazil following the Civil War.

Bill Yoast, one of the coaches who inspired the Disney film “Remember the Titans,” died Thursday in Springfield, Virginia, according to Alexandria City Public Schools. He was 94.
Yoast initially served as a head coach for the football team at the all-white Francis C. Hammond High School, leading them to a regional championship in 1969. But his claim to fame was as defensive coordinator and assistant coach at T.C. Williams High School, which was formed from the merger of three high schools in Alexandria, Virginia.
In 1971, the T.C. Williams’ racially integrated football team, the Titans, became one of the most dominant high school teams in state history, going on an undefeated 13-0 run with nine shutouts. The team, along with Yoast and black head coach Herman Boone, served as the loose inspiration for “Remember the Titans,” which starred Will Patton as Yoast and Denzel Washington as Boone. Yoast coached at Francis C. Hammond High School, an all-white school, before integration in the city high schools of Alexandria in 1971. He became defensive coach and assistant to head coach Herman Boone, who is black.
The relationship between the two men, who were portrayed by Will Patton and Denzel Washington, was the focus of the 2000 film.
“I didn’t know Yoast. Yoast didn’t know me,” Boone told The Washington Post. “I knew that Hammond had no black athletes, and I didn’t know if Coach Yoast had anything to do with that. But we got to (training camp) and became roommates and found a way to talk to one another.

Founding Fathers: “Drunk History”
Season 2, Episode 8: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams Had Beef
The premise behind “Drunk History” is simple: What if your history teacher preached the most interesting aspects of history, but did it after finishing off too many IPAs before class started? By far one of the best segments happens during the second episode of Season 2, where Patrick Walsh struggles and slurs his way through the story of how lifelong friends and founding fathers Thomas Jefferson and John Adams became bitter enemies over the course of the 1800 presidential election. In honor of the NFL season starting anew, we pick out our favorite football movies...
Football is sort of like smoking cigarettes; we know it’s bad for us, but we just can’t quit it. Between the amazing physical feats of strength and finesse, the team camaraderie, the personal storylines that inject theatrics into every matchup, and the ability for an underdog to unseat a favored rival any given Sunday, there’s something primal and inherently dramatic about America’s most-watched sport.
Perhaps that’s why the game makes a great basis for feature films. All of the heart, pain, and glory that can be found in football are also the same ingredients for a memorable movie. The gridiron has been the setting for a ton of Hollywood productions, but we’ve singled out the true MVPs of the genre that will give you...
