For the second consecutive year, Encore has chosen a select group of screen professionals who have achieved new heights in 2010/2011, whose decisions influence and shape Australia’s audiovisual industry, and whose work has stood out from the crowd. These are our Power 50.
1. Emile Sherman – Producer
Last February, Sherman became the first Australian producer to receive an Academy Award for Best Picture, alongside his See-Saw Films partner Iain Canning, and Bedlam Productions’ Gareth Unwin. It also won at the BAFTAs and the Producers Guild of America, in addition to the many other honours for its cast and crew.
While technically a UK production, the Australianness of the film is undeniable – and so is its success; with a modest U$15m budget, The King’s Speech has grossed more than $405m worldwide – one of the most successful independent films of all time. Read Emile Sherman interview

Managing Director of Omnilab Media, Christopher Mapp, has announced that they will appeal findings made against the company in Federal Court proceedings brought by Digital Cinema Network (Dcn). Mapp pointed out that several aspects of the judgment passed down by the Court were favourable for Omnilab. "In particular, Dcn failed in its attempt to have the Court restrain by injunction Omnilab Media from performing the role of virtual print fee (Vpf) integrator for the independent cinema community," he said. "However, there are also findings by the Court which Omnilab Media considers to be wrong, and those findings will be appealed," Mapp further commented.

Yes, I know you've all been salivating over the thought of having Brandon Routh (the former Superman) in theaters once again. And yes, that's me being sarcastic, unless you are a huge fan of his. Anyways, he's seen in a little movie called "Dylan Dog: Dead of Night," based off the popular Italian horror comics that's finally making it's way to theaters in the U.S. pretty soon. Read the press release and see "Dylan Dog" for yourselves when it hits theaters over here.Christopher Mapp, the managing director of Omnilab Media, announced today that the highly anticipated film,“Dylan Dog: Dead of Night,” starring Brandon Routh, Sam Huntington, and Anita Briem, would receive a wide theatrical release in the U.S. on April 29th. The releasing entity will be the newly founded Omni/Fsr label. Freestyle Releasing will facilitate the physical aspects of the film’s theatrical run, but Omni/Fsr,...

Omnilab Media has confirmed production of the sequel to the highest grossing Australian film of 2010, Tomorrow, When the War Began, to be made in Nsw and scheduled for a September shoot.
The sequel, adapted from the John Marsden novels, will be once again written and directed by Stuart Beattie. It will be shot in the Hunter Valley and the Blue Mountains, and according to the Nsw Government, it is expected to generate more than 450 jobs – with a $40m injection into the state’s economy.
The state Government provided a grant from its film fund to Omnilab Media, in order to secure production (including pre and post-production) for Nsw.
“We have worked hard to build up our Australian business into an internationally successful company employing more than 300 people,” said Omnilab CEO Christopher Mapp. “Without Government support, many of these jobs would be exported overseas. Omnilab Media [Cinema Services] and Paramount Pictures have signed a virtual print fee (Vpf) deal – the first of six expected agreements between the company and the major film studios.
“The negotiation process with distributors for Vpf contracts has been long and complex, however with the excellent cooperation of the major distributors we are set to sign several more agreements imminently,” said Omnilab Media managing director Christopher Mapp.“We are in the final stages of our negotiations with other major studios and we are also intending to contract with many Australian independent distributors.”
Vpf is a model for financing the conversion to digital cinema, with a third party paying upfront for the equipment, and recouping the cost over time through payments from distributors and exhibitors.
Last year, Omcs partnered with the Independent Cinema Association of Australia (Icaa) to support cinema operators in their digital transition.

He then moved to Sydney, where he has produced the iconic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, as well as Heaven’s Burning, Siam Sunset, The Hard Word, The Book of Revelation, Blessed and Red Hill – Patrick Hughes’ modern western which opens today.
Clark has also been executive producer of films such as Chopper, Thunderstruck and Razzle Dazzle, and was a member of the board of the Australian Film Commission.

Ominilab Media has launched the new Auckland CGI animation studio Oktobor Animation.
“We are very proud of the launch of this exciting new CG animation studio in New Zealand. Oktobor Animation is inspired by the success of Weta whose success is owed in part to the strong commitment made by the New Zealand government to incentivise international producers to bring their films to the region,” said Omnilab managing director Christopher Mapp.
“We believe there is a substantial opportunity to extend this success to the television VFX and animation arena by establishing Auckland as the viable and competitive production hub for longform CG animation. Hence our significant financial commitment in Oktobor Animation. We also have a strong belief in the New Zealand market as a whole and will continue to invest in more and projects as this vibrant market continues to develop,” he added.

In a two-picture deal with Inferno Entertainment, Entertainment One has picked up Canadian distribution rights to two movies produced by Australia's Omnilab Media -- the Jason Statham action pic The Killer Elite and the action drama Tomorrow When the War Began.
In Gary McKendry's Killer, Statham plays a former Navy Seal who reassembles his old team, which includes Robert De Niro, for a confrontation with a former Sas member, played by Clive Owen. The film is produced by Michael Boughen through Omnilab's Australian production arm, Ambience Entertainment, and Joni Sighvatsson. Exec producers are Christopher Mapp, Matthew Street, David Whealy, Peter D. Graves and Steve Chasman.
The top-grossing Australian film of 2010, Tomorrow, written and directed by Stuart Beattie and also produced by Boughen, concerns eight teens who find themselves in the middle of a war.
The deal was negotiated by eOne's Lara Thompson and Inferno's Kimberley Fox.

For Tomorrow, When the War Began, post-production/VFX vendor The Lab conceived and invented a colour calibration process called the Digital Print System (Dps). Its creator, head of digital intermediate Al Hansen, tells the story behind this innovation.
Tomorrow, When the War Began was the perfect project to utilise this colour calibration process, because it was a big feature film with an experienced cinematographer and production team.
We demonstrated the Dps calibration technique by showing test results to the film’s producers, Michael Boughen and Andrew Mason, and executive producer Christopher Mapp, during pre-production. With the support of the cinematographer, Ben Nott, Acs, we embarked on a method to completely colour-calibrate all levels of the production, ensuring that the images – from rushes to post – maintained the characteristics of the final 35mm film deliverables.

Tomorrow, When the War Began delivers a nearly seamless transition from print to screen, with just the right amount of Hollywood-style gloss. Georgina Pearson spoke to its creators about the challenge of making Australia’s first teenage blockbuster.
Adapting a book into a film is one thing, but taking an internationally acclaimed, award-winning novel of ongoing popularity and turning it into a potential movie franchise is a completely different ball game. Such was the case with John Marsden’s Tomorrow series; set in a remote area of rural Australia, the books tell the story of a group of teenagers and their struggle for survival when their lives are suddenly and violently upended by war. With no one to lean on but each other, they must learn to escape and fight back against a hostile military force.

The team behind the film adaptation of John Marsden’s novel Tomorrow When the War Began has plans to extend the property to three films and a television series.
“What we’re trying to create is a franchise, with a potential for three films and a television series. To create that opportunity we need to see the Australian audience embrace it and the international marketplace recognise the strength of the film,” executive producer and managing director of Omnilab Media Christopher Mapp told Encore.
According to Mapp, there is no minimum box office result that would guarantee production of the sequels and the TV series.
“I won’t be able to give a number on that, because it will be a blend between box office success, foreign sales and the DVD, which won’t be that long down the track. The social media out there is certainly strong enough to suggest...

Robert De Niro brought a touch of Parisian elegance to Australia this week (beg04Jul10) - filming scenes in a mocked-up French street in the middle of Melbourne.
The actor has flown Down Under for a 10-day shoot to film his part in new movie The Killer Elite, based on The Feathermen novel by famed British adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
Movie crews shut off an area of Melbourne on Tuesday to film De Niro's scenes, and they baffled onlookers by transforming the sidewalk into a street from the French capital - placing Parisian phone booths, street signs and information boards along the road.
The street was also bedecked with vintage cars to transport De Niro back into the 1970s.
The film's executive producer, Christopher Mapp, recently told TheAge.com they will be using the Australian city as a backdrop for most of their foreign location filming: "We've found elements of the Middle East, Paris, the U.K. here. We'll be shooting elements of true locations, too, but I challenge audiences to pick which is which."...

It’s been four years since Encore published its Top 20 Directors and Producers list, and we felt it was time to compile a new, more comprehensive list that included professionals working across all areas – film, television and Tvc production – as well as the leaders and decision-makers that determine the direction of the industry.
Instead of having a limited list of panellists, we consulted with the main agencies and organisations, and also asked our readers to nominate their candidates. We ended up with a list of more than 200 screen industry professionals, and deciding the final 50 was indeed a difficult task. Of course, some other very influential and successful people didn’t make the final cut, but there were only 50 spots and too many talented men and women!
We hope you’ll enjoy – or not, and if so, debate it passionately – the selection of what will become our annual Power 50 list.

A large step forward in the likelihood of a sequel to the 1982 fantasy movie The Dark Crystal took place today with the announcement of The Speirig Brothers (Daybreakers, Undead) to direct The Power of the Dark Crystal. In addition, The Jim Henson Company is partnering with the Australian production company Onmilab Media on the making of the movie.
Also revealed was the intention to film the movie in stereoscopic 3D, the same 3D technique used for Avatar. As was the case with the first Dark Crystal, Henson will create the film's puppets and strange alien creatures. Brian Froud is returning to work as the conceptual designer of the sequel while Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Jason Lust are producing for Henson.
