This article contains spoilers for Squid Game: The Challenge through episode 10.
Squid Game became a global hit for many reasons: its bloody violence, its scathing criticism of late-stage capitalism, its Jung Ho-yeon, and so on. But perhaps the most underrated reason is the most obvious: its games.
Never before has the survival horror genre depicted lovingly-crafted high stakes versions of children’s games quite like Squid Game. When it came time for Netflix to adapt the show into reality competition Squid Game: The Challenge, it obviously couldn’t include murder, capitalistic critique, or Jung Ho-yeon. It could, however, include those games. So it did.
Squid Game: The Challenge is full of contests that should be familiar to dedicated Squid Game fans. It also tosses in a few new curveballs to keep the players on their toes. Here you can find every game that Netflix’s Squid Game reality series has staged so far,...

John Kramer may be sick (in many senses of the word), but he isn’t losing a step. Saw X is set to open later this month and while the promotion for the film has been tongue-in-cheek, it’s time to get into the nitty-gritty of it all. Lionsgate has released a clip of the film courtesy of Bloody Disgusting that showcases this entry’s signature trap. Recently, the marketing for Saw X has been having a ball poking fun at the Nicole Kidman AMC promo with their own version where Jigsaw goes to the theater narrating the wonder of watching people getting tortured. There was also a cheeky little video that showcased a Saw version of Milton Bradley’s Operation, which was rebranded Saw-peration.
In this new clip, a custodian of the hospital that Kramer has targeted is bound to a chair with two tubes strapped to each eye.

As audiences filed back to movie theaters after the 2020-2021 pandemic shutdown, the well-known theater chain AMC theaters had felt the need to get people excited about going to the movies again. The business conceived of a dramatic promotional commercial that aimed to make us introspective and attempts to poetically capture the feeling of experiencing a movie at a theater. The promo features Nicole Kidman giving a passionate monologue as she sits in an empty theater with her drink and basking over clips of recent films. Perhaps the schmaltzy, serious nature helped the promo reach infamy as it has been the subject of various memes and parodies, including an SNL sketch.
The twisted minds at Lionsgate, behind the upcoming Saw X, have just released their own promo, which satirizes the Nicole Kidman AMC commercial. Only this time, it’s Jigsaw who takes the audience on the journey, on his tricycle no less.

The Saw franchise dominated every Halloween season with new entries for years. After Chris Rock tried his hand at the series with his Jigsaw copycat killer spin-off Spiral: From the book of Saw, the Og is back as Tobin Bell returns to play more games. Saw X aims to take back the spooky holiday and revitalize the franchise.
The promotion machine is chugging along for the new torture film, and the official social media account for Saw X has released a new teaser video. ComingSoon.net reports that the new tweet sports the caption, “be careful who you put under the knife. #SawX #SawTenber.” In the teaser video, there is a cheeky parody of the popular board game from Milton Bradley, Operation. Only now, it’s Saw style. The board game is rebranded “Saw-peration” and the tagline on the game is “I want to *play* a game.” The game...

It’s always tempting to fetishize single-shot sequences — to look for visible seams in their making, to wonder how many times it took to nail the final take, to get caught up in the meticulous, Milton Bradley’s Mouse Trap choreography of it all. Some are great, some are merely show-offy, and others go from bravura to self-indulgent simply by outstaying their welcome by 30 seconds. It’s usually just look-ma-no-cuts razzle dazzle, a bit of filmmaking virtuosity designed to have viewers wondering, “How did they do that?” The more pertinent question,...

In the opening scene of "The Least Dangerous Game" -- the second episode of the third season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" -- the show's four main characters, in a rare moment of downtime, gather around a table to play a Klingon-based boardgame called "Bat'leths & bIHnuchs." The players are all dressed in Klingon clothing, and they drink from tapered ridged mugs that Klingons are typically seen using throughout "Star Trek." The game board is a hexagonal grid, and bears the red/blood orange/goldenrod color scheme of "The Settlers of Catan." The players roll a 20-sided die.
The central feature of "Bat'leths & bIHnuchs," however, is a small video screen arranged behind the board wherein a pre-recorded game master offers an introduction, dictates the actions of the players, and reacts angrily when they make a bad decision. The game master is none other than Martok (J.G. Hertzler), a recurring Klingon character...

The only thing Trekkies like doing more than nitpicking continuity errors -- and re-writing scenes in our heads because "Tuvok was a little out of character in that one scene" -- is hunting for inter-Trek references. Given the expansive, 56-year lifespan of "Star Trek," not to mention and its current, rapidly increasing volume, there will always be a new piece of mythology to lock into the giant puzzle. Every new story is, in the mind of a Trekkie, going to be information that can be used later. Data gathering is a sport. Typically, the game is played in good fun, but if winning is not important then, Commander, why keep score?
"Star Trek: Lower Decks," generally speaking, is a glorious opportunity for the nerdier Trekkies to earn a few Brownie points among their fellow fans. The series is so lousy with references, one must watch each episode multiple times with...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Apple TV+'s For All Mankind, Noam Chomsky, and more in today's daily Link Tank!
Here are nine possible lightsabers that may show up in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
"The record for the number of different lightsabers seen in one single Star Wars movie is easily held by what is — most likely — you’re least favorite Star Wars film, Attack of the Clones. When an army of Jedi crash a Separatist party, everyone has a lightsaber, which, at the time was thrilling. But, when it comes to lightsabers is less more, or is more actually more? The Rise of Skywalker is set to end the Skywalker saga, but it also means that this is likely the last time we’ll see new lightsaber battles on the big screen until at least 2022, if not longer.

Radio Silence’s Ready Or Not raises the bar for any horror comedy that dares challenge “Milton Bradley’s Most Dangerous Game.” A bloody vicious, bloody hilarious, and bloody freakin’ outrageous winner. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett roll the dice on matrimonial manhunts, but success needn’t gambler’s odds. Samara Weaving has been destined for Scream Queen glory ever since The Babysitter (then Mayhem), and Ready Or Not completes a trilogy of performances uncontested by measurements of Ellen Ripley or Laurie Strode mojo. Instructions are clear, rules cleverly adhered to and violence of the utmost remorseless brutality – 2019’s summer movie season closes on top scores.
Grace (Samara Weaving) has, or will soon have, any girl’s dream life. She’s about to wed the man of her dreams, Alex (Mark O’Brien), at his family’s extravagant estate. Champagne flows, attendees fawn over the beautiful bride, but night...

Do you remember the classic 80s board game Fireball Island!? I completely forgot about it until I saw that the game was being rebooted! As soon as I saw the name all those memories came flooding back!
The tagline for the game was "The dimensional adventure game of pitfalls and perils!" It was set on an unexplored tropical island, which was the home of the primitive idol Vul-Kar. Players progress along winding paths around the island, avoiding fireballs and trying to capture Vul-Kar's jewel and carry it to the escape boat. Marbles were used to knock out opposing players.
Restoration Games started a Kickstarter campaign to bring the game back because it has been one of the most requested games from them. It will be a more compact version of the game than the one Milton Bradley produced and it's already blown past its $250,000 goal. It now has over $600,000 backing it,...

Yes, Valentine’s Day was over a week ago, but many longtime couples are still trying to rekindle that special spark in their relationship. Of course that “Fifty Shades” flick is still in theatres, but maybe they don’t want to have some time together that could leave some bruises that others would question (guess you didn’t yell “red’ quickly enough). The 2010 comedy Date Night had Tina and Steve getting away from their kids, and getting mixed-up in a high-octane crime caper. What if the couple are childless and want to enjoy some time with similar couples (now just get those Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice jokes about that 1969 classic out of your dirty minds)? Well, the year before that “date” flick there was the Couples Retreat romp, but that was an exotic vacation locale. A more casual weekly get-together, just eating cheese, drinking wine, and setting out those Milton Bradley...

Make your way to the end of the board by rolling the die, hoping that a snake is not waiting to bite you around the corner. Snakes and Ladders is a worldwide classic board game which is enjoyed as an indoor game by people of varied ages. Initially, this game was created to teach people about morals where it originated from. So, where exactly does this ever-popular game come from?
Snakes and Ladders is an ancient Indian board game that is played between two or more players. The board consists of gridded squares that are numbered from 1 through 100. The aim of the game is to move your game piece accordingly to the outcomes of the die until you get to the last square on top of the board. This game is a pure race of luck and chance.

Five years ago this weekend Tim Burton’s updating of Dark Shadows, the gothic/horror-themed soap opera which ran from 1966 to 1971 on ABC and was a seminal influence on a generation of budding horror fans (including Burton), was released on American movie screens, one weekend after Marvel’s The Avengers was still dictating the imaginations (and the wallets) of moviegoers everywhere. Given Burton’s track record with horror comedies (Beetlejuice being the primary example) and collaborations with Johnny Depp (Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands), a surprisingly low number of ticket-buyers seemed ultimately to care—the movie, which cost $150 million to make, and undoubtedly a hefty chunk of change more than that to market, would earn back only slightly more than half of that in the United States, though its final take globally came in at around $235 million. There were a few takers among critics, notably...

From the earliest days to the 3Ds and Switch, we look at how Nintendo, more than any other company, defined handheld games...
Handheld games, it could be argued, are Nintendo’s very foundation. After all, a pack of playing cards is the ultimate analogue handheld game - portable, and playable almost anywhere, assuming you have a steady surface to lay them on. And it was as a manufacturer of playing cards that Nintendo first began way, way back in 1889, and, to this day, a plaque that reads, “The Nintendo Playing Card Company” still hangs on the old company headquarters wall in Kyoto.
